The Basotho tribe has its roots in the north of Southern Africa, before migrating in different groups and settling in various parts of the region.
Some of these groups who migrated back in the days are known as the Batswana, and BaPedi tribes. Most Basotho people live in South Africa, while some live in Botswana,Lesotho and others. Sesotho is the language of the Basotho people. While some call it Sesotho, others call it Sesotho sa borwa.
A few others say it is Southern Sotho, to differentiate it from Sepedi, which is Northern Sotho. Sesotho is one of the 10 official languages of South Africa. The Basotho people particularly stand out for their various amazing ways of dressing. The young Basotho girls wear sefaha sa letsopa: neck ornaments made of clay beads. They also wear thana ea banana, which is a dress made out of clay beads. As they get older, they wear skirts made out of woven fiber, and mose oa lekoko, which is a cow skin skirt. Young Basotho boys, on the other hand, wear tseha, an undergarment made out of sheepskin, usually cut in a triangular shape. This undergarment, which only covers the private parts, is made longer as the boys grow, to cover their bodies, down to their legs. Basotho men would usually adorn themselves in blankets made of animal skin. Chiefs wore lehlosi: blankets made out of the skins of wild cats or leopards. Some other men wore setipe and mokhahla which are other types of blankets. Basotho names are common reflections of their cultural heritage and belief systems.
