Mike, the rules are not perhaps logical or reasonable and explaining them is not always easy. But put simply, there are two choices for a Zetec in a Fiesta: A. Use a complete Zetec engine management system, as designed, for the correct engine (2.0 management on a 2.0 etc.) - then you can run on gasoline (with a catalytic converter, lambda sensors etc). B. Use an aftermarket ECU (with a catalytic converter, lambda sensors etc) but THEN you need to run E85. I would not advise mixing and matching engine management parts from different engines, not between Blacktop/Silvertop and not between 1.8/2.0 either. Sorry if I wasn't clear on all this when we spoke on the phone. /Gustaf SFRO

I am using an ecu from a 2.0 mondeo zetec, it just dosent have the imobilzer in it. The inlet parts are from an escort zetec so they bolt directly on to the engine. After reading what you have put now I'm alot happier as this means I don't have to go over to e85. Am I alright using an aftermarket cat?

@@mike_themechanic good! Yes, an aftermarket cat is fine (just don't choose a 100 cell "race cat").

All those trips to the scrapyard and you still forgot one of the most important parts of your (re)build; a zetec exhaust manifold with a lambda sensor. I’ve done this conversion -in my MK2- and used a MKV escort downpipe and shifted the lamdasensor a bit to keep it away from the radiator.

Good tip. I've already made most of the manifold and I'm hoping an aftermarket cat will fit. If not then I now know what to get hold of 👍👍

Really interesting Mike, I think our U.K. rules are similar for a new build and technically, I think we have to re-register the car with a new Q plate registration over here (assuming it is going to be for road use)…

Yeah here i think I will keep the orignal plate and age of the vehicle but it will be called an amateur build vehicle.

The best is to use bike pump, fuel pressure is very low with bike carbs. And sounds that carbs are not in sync either. How about nodiz mapping?

This (and being a bit on the cheaper side) is what is keeping me from putting a duratech in my mk2 escort. It would be simpler to use carbs, but it's not allowed. I'll have to stick with the old pinto that it's registered with. Good luck, and keep up the good work.
@mike_themechanic

Yes a duratec does make things alot harder. But a Zetec isn't actually that difficult to add injection to it. If you can find an escort 16v like I did then you have everything apart from an ecu you need to get the car through the mot. If you found the correct donor car you can take the engine, injection and wiring loom from an escort and all you then need is the correct ecu

Hi Edal, yes I think you are right, although I had a 2 litre Duratech in my Focus and it wasn’t that brilliant or much better than the old Pinto units in my long experience. I think the Zetec motors are supposed to be much better potential power-wise, so unless you wanted to go the extra mile and fit one of those you’re probably sensible keeping the old Pinto lump. Kind regards buddy.

Just to clarify, that inlet manifold is not a CVH one, it is zetec specific (though why they made it with an intermediate plate I do not know). But thankyou for the plug nonetheless 👍

Hi mate ,just found your channel ,what ,hubs ,driveshafts and gear box did you use ??

Hi mate. I'm using the original hubs, the driveshafts are, long one is from a mk2 xr2 and the short one is from a mk1 xrs. The gearbox is an ib5 from a later escort. Check out my ultimate guide videos as there is loads of info of what's needed there.

Why don't you get bike throttlebodies and run it with ME221. Same sound and maybee can work something out with supplier of the management system

The rules state I have to take the engine and injection system as a "whole package" I can get round this by using the injection from another Zetec engine

@@mike_themechanic Found this: "PATS (Passive Anti Theft System) thatcham CAT2 aproved immobaliser Non PATS before pats was introduced in 1992 there were zetecs built without pats but only 1.8s and maybe some 1.6s however i know of no non pats 2.0 ecus Prior to the installation of pats ford could be hotwired very easily or the ignition could be forced etc External PATS pats was introduced in 1992 as "external pats" where the pats system was seperate from the ecu and as such you could change the ecus and the pats was unaffected. external pats ecus take a signal from the pats module to say the chipped keys are present and it will then start the car. this can easily be bypassed with a live feed to the pats trigger on the ecu, this made the cars harder to steal, even now most amatuer thieves would be stopped by external pats Internal PATS around 1995 ford changed the pats system to "internal pats" which as the name suggests the pats system was incorporated inside the ecu and changing ecu is a ball ache involving swapping keys or chips and the pats sensor etc."
