Major Guard Retention Mistake

This video I discuss one of the biggest mistakes I see people make with their Guard Retention. People often have a tendency to hold their Grips way too long when someone starts to pass their guard. The act of holding these grips can often expose the elbow knee space which makes it much easier for someone to pass your guard. In addition if someone can get inside tight past your frames escaping side control becomes much more difficult. If you have questions please comment and ask.

Thanks for this video I have been loosing this transition battle on a consistent basis. I see now I’ve been maintaining grips way to long. Makes total sense to let go. Once they’re at a certain position your actually helping them by holding grips to long. Enjoy your vids my man keep ‘em coming🤘

During class we mostly work on technique, thanks to videos like this I can get a good understanding of fundamentals that could otherwise take much longer to pick up on through a typical class.

I just watched your specific sparring videos on Fb stories. Your instructions on KZbin are the gold standard, but being able to watch you actually using the collar sleeve/ matrix is a thousand times mind opening than anything else. If you can, please post more of the sparring too. It is so valuable learning tool.

I agree a narrated roll video (maybe focused on guard retention) would be amazing. Like firas zahabi does narrated rolls

Dear Jon, you are the real MVP. As a consistently struggling forever white belt I have to admit that your videos are the only ones that help me work my way through fundamental issues I have with my bjj game. As always, your input and wisdom are priceless. Thank you.

Love this! Thank you JT. This is the exact type of thing I need to see and understand. This has been my struggle. Teaching what 'not' to do is just as if not more important for me than what to do. Please keep it up and especially in the guard retention and recovery area. Early stage actions are what I want to better understand next. Mid and late stage too still though.

Thanks for the video, Jon. Ive been watching your videos for the last month or so. I'm a brown belt returning after an extended layoff and find the concept videos really helpful. You asked for suggestions; would you consider a video on framing? Different types of frames and which to use in each range would be great. Cheers.

Great video. It would be helpful to describe which grips to let go of. I find that once I let go of everything I’m just unattached and floating, then I get passed.

Shane Stevens That being said I know it’s a hard skill to develop. Just when people hold grips too long they often get into a much worse position to recover from

So good, Jon! Could you share your thoughts on resetting an open guard after they get to HQ position? It seems like it can be game over if they get HQ.
@JonThomasBJJ

Theodore Teow I would say try to focus on lassoing and pushing with the lasso foot to clear the bottom leg out, watch my video on defending the knee cut pass it’s a similar idea

Do you train no gi Jon? If so how do u adapt your gi game to this? We have similar games.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 5 жыл бұрын
Tommy B hey buddy I have not been training no gi for a while, I would say my passing is very similar Guard you can really use spider guards and sleeve control games much. Guard Retention is roughly the same in no gi though.

Hello Jon, what type of guard do you recommend for all non flexible guys out there? I understand the concept of framing but I'm still struggling retaining guard due to my lack of flexibility. Thanks dude, great work.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 5 жыл бұрын
ty ty hey buddy well for one if you don’t already start taking your flexibility really seriously it’s one of the easiest way to fast improve your game if you are not already very flexible. Secondly I mean it’s hard to say what’s going wrong in your Retention without seeing it. Saying flexibility is the problem is a broad explanation for your problem sometimes it might be but other times it’s probably technical mistakes too. So I would say without seeing what you are doing exactly start working your flexibility a lot, and stay dedicated to finding a good process for you honestly a lot of what I show does not require much flexibility.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 5 жыл бұрын
ty ty and as far as a guard for non flexible people I think knee shield, single leg guard, Lucas leite half Guard, and deep half are good bets
