This would work wonders for me BUT some of my locks have areas where they are thick and get thinner as you go down. I wonder how the re-attachment process would be?

There are a couple good videos on youtube that involve nothing crazy like thread or glue or destructive interlocking. The tool is only $5 (you can get a whole set from Amazon with nice wooden handles). Here is one of the better videos. over time the loc that was attached, matts into the new growth forming a full loc that continues growing as normal.
