Major overhaul of the 1930's Super Chariot Racer ( Noah's Ark ) Fairground Ride

This funfair Speedway was a major a traction in the 70's & 80's along with the Walzers at my local park, Wythenshawe Park M22 & M23 area. But sadly it became banned because it attracted the wrong sort of people spoiling it for the majority who really enjoyed having it at the park as I did. It's was themed very different back in the day as it was Blacked out with disco lights and Strobe lights 🚥. Even the bikes were coloured black. I absolutely loved it. Today it should be re-manufactured but it's fantastic to see some funfair Speedways are still going at my time of life at the proud age of 54. I'd love to ride it again as I've many memories of it. It should come back to Wythenshawe Park. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us, restoring such an iconic enjoyable ride👏👏👏👏. Wythenshawe Park use to have alongside the Speedway the Ski Jump ride another fabulous a traction. Bring them back together at Wythenshawe Park M22 & M23 area because I'd still ride them today 👍👍👍👍. And as old as they are they would still blend in very well with all new modern funfair rides of today like at the Hull Funfair time every October. Brilliant! Really enjoyed this video, really interesting to see behind the scenes of such a classic ride. Not sure what I enjoyed more, seeing the workings of the ride or seeing the love and passion of the people over hauling the ride. Thanks for making and sharing this video.

mick thebass Thanks for the reply! You must of had a brilliant time following the overhauling of this ride. As much as I enjoy the pleasure these rides give riding on them, nothing beats seeing what makes the ride work, to me that’s fascinating. I would never tire of listening to Thomas Rowland. Yes it was very interesting. I operated the ride for the public before the overhaul and I often had to nurse it through the day. Tom is a very able and knowledgeable rides engineer, it was good fun catching up with him from time to time for an update. He can explain things in simplistic terms, and that helps people at many levels understand how it all works. The ride has a new lease of life now, and I can tell you it runs silky smooth. Thanks for the reply! I just find the mechanics and the operation of a ride really interesting, I really wish I had privilege to operate such a beautiful ride as you did. I bet you loved your time running the ride. When you say you had to nurse the ride through the day, why was that? Did it just tire as the day went on or other things? Was really good to a brief view of the ride controls, brilliant flash from the knife switch, hard to imagine that the ride runs on 115v yet has so much power, the motor is not overly big yet the speed it is capable of getting the ride to is quite phenomenal. I find Tom such a really interesting guy, I could watch and listen to him all day long. He is the kind of person that you would walk away from knowing you learnt something that you never knew. Not many people in life can have that effect! I would love to visit Dingles one day, I do not think you would get me out! Really looking forward to seeing more behind the scenes footage from you, I have subscribed and hit your bell so soon as you post new content, I should get a message. Thanks for the link to the moon Rocket, have lost track of how many times I have watched that video, another beautiful and interesting ride, would love to know more about the mechanics of that ride. I was amazed at the size of what looked to be like a power transformer! Really interesting!

Well, the ride is over 70 years old and like any old lady she had her quirks. It would be stubborn to start sometimes unless you cranked the speed control to full, then fling those not holding on off if you were not fast enough to back off, other times smoke pours out of the speed control like you were frying sausages if you did not feather it exactly and the noise from the gear set was horrendous on the overrun. I love running the ride when I can, it brings back memories to many generations and first hand experience for the kids of today. The moon rocket is a great ride also, but has to be loaded more equally to keep the ride in balance. The operator booth is right up top along with the speed controller and switch gear ( power transformer ) so can shake you to bits...Good fun though...

I used to walk this all day long as a kid. They couldn't get me off it so gave me a job. Kelly Marie blasting out from the sound system, and my chopper bike sitting close by. I never had it so good.

monkey spanner, reminds me of my skinhead days 1970 whitley bay, used to go on the speedway and the house of fun barrel stick to it with 2 good runners a wonder what happened to the barrel

Hi Andy, I am not sure if Paul Grimshaw owned this machine, as far as I am aware it belonged to the Edwards family. The ride was manufactured in 1937, so could well have been bought and sold by others over the years. You may be able to trace more history through Dingles Faiground Heritage Centre. Hope this helps.
