Major problems on Belgium Coast Tram (overhead cable burn out)

After already having a problem on the line (which made the trams run on the wrong side and people having to go on the tracks to get on and off), the overhead cables had a short circuit after the tram went across on the points. The short circuit melted the cables (quite spectacularly) due to over current. The cables came down, but as the short circuit was now over they started running the trams like nothing had happened. People were told to walk along a fast busy road by the tracks, right next to a hanging live cable, so that they could get on the tram in front to continue their journey. But the tram left without them, leaving them stranded.
This occurred on the 17/06/2015.

Beno knows a lot about electromechanics.. Probably also what voltage is on there and what distance to keep. 1000 volts can jump 1mm trough air and afaik there is something like 600V on it. So as long the wires aren't going to move it's pretty safe, given that the person is aware of the wire.

Missing track side signaling when crossing over the catenary separator/isolator to wit: 1. main switch OFF 2. lower Pantograph after passing the catenary separator/isolator to the other track 3. raise pantograph 4. main switch ON And last if not least,... insufficient tram operator training!
@martinum4
@martinum4 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly this, everyone else is kind of missing the point... Most of the times you don't have to lower the pantograph, switching off is enough to not carry an arc. We have a tram-train system here that switches from 750VDC (Tram voltage) to 16kVAC (German Railway standard voltage), there is a bit (about 10 meters) of track with overhead line, but the line is not carrying any voltage there, pantograph stays up and just coasting a bit.
@wesleyhurd3574
@wesleyhurd3574 6 жыл бұрын
Martin It would seem that lowering the pantograph may have prevented the problem that this tram was having. There may have been a small difference in voltage between the two lines depending on current draw, but they are probably fed from the same power station and charged to the same voltage. Most likely a DC circuit so frequency synchronization is not an issue. I don’t think incompatible power supplies being shunted together was the main issue. I believe that there was mechanical damage to the caternary system as the tram crossed from one track to the other. It looks like an insulator was compromised, causing a ground fault (short circuit) by the power cable directly touching its grounded metal support bracket. The fault current would have then overheated the wire until it melted, as you suggested.

In San Francisco we let the pantograph roll though without turning the current off! With the Bredas the lights and system cuts off automatically then it reactivates! It sometimes happens that the Bredas are sitting in the current dividers! But they run off the other car that is still in contact the normal section of cantnary! Siemens S200s are not affected they carry on. They have this turbo battery that runs the whole car when resetting from crossing Section dividers! The turbo battery 🔋 can also power adjacent cars electrically/physically connected with the couples!

Except that I don't know any tramsystem in Europe that has these 'terms and conditions' when it just switches to a different section. Most trams are 750VDC max and in this case, it just switches to another section of overhead wiring. Those section-separators are up to the job of being 'driven' with the pantograph up, they are designed to withstand that. Driving them while giving traction is usually not supposed to happen, but they are tested for those occasions ánd usually feature jacobsladders to get rid of arcs forming should that happen. Seen it so many times as a kid (such a seperator was right in front of my grandparents house in Amsterdam for years, always fun to sit at the window and hoping to see good arcs form when a tram would pass). But I've never seen a failure like this. Usually, drivers only need to stop giving traction for a short time and then re-apply when the pantograph has passed the section-seperator. This was just a coincidence or bad maintenance.

Generally, I'm more forgiving for De Lijn, they are being starved by the government, so not everything is their fault, and they are doing a reasonable job all considering. Especially the Kusttram is very handy and reasonably ok. But this is a major f-up. No coordination between the two tram drivers to get people change vehicles, that current should have been switched off much sooner to check of there's no danger, and some police officers could have been welcome to calm the traffic down. These basic safety precautions wouldn't have taken that much time for it to be better to just ignore them for the sake of, what, actually? Getting half of the passengers a few minutes earlier to their destination? Or was it the end of the shift of that tram driver, and she couldn't be bothered? Either way, as far as I can tell, there should be disciplinary actions against her.

Just doing their best in a bad situation instead of complete paralysis in the event of a problem as we are now accustomed to the English speaking world. Given the number of 'emergency cross overs' on a system that runs single ended trams, it would appear 'wrong road' running is relatively common. The locals are probably used to it.

Daniel K there are advantages with a one directional namely with less weighty due to only having one set of doors and lower repair costs. On paper it works well until a problem happens and the trams need to turn without a turning loop.

As if a tram cares about the weight of a door set. One person is probably already heavier than two doors + motors.

The doors are one of the most expensive parts of a Tram, because of all the mechanics inside it. A straight wall just needs some painting. Also, when you have doors only on one side, you can use the other side for seats.

On older streetcar/tramway systems in Europe, you'll almost exclusively find unidirectional trams. Here's a quick timeline: Back when all these systems were built at the end of the 19th century, they were all bidirectional, the cars had 2 axles and usually carried a couple of trailers, which they had to maneuver around at every terminus. Over time, to speed up service and make the systems more efficient, several changes would be made: -Turning loops, to be able to reenter service faster at termini -passenger flow in trains, meaning that passengers should enter and exit at designated enter or exit doors, there was also a conductor at the entrance doors checking your ticket -longer cars (up to 12 axles) with more passenger space Passenger flow and more passengers are easier to achieve with unidirectional vehicles Nowadays, as low-floor streetcars are on the market, the door space can also be counted as passenger space and passenger flow isn't really a thing anymore, which made bidirectional trains attractive to streetcar systems again. While most systems are still constructed for unidirectional trams, bidirectional ones are giong into service in more and more systems. But some systems still rely on unidirectional tramways only
@barvdw
@barvdw 6 жыл бұрын
An empty driver cab takes up a lot of space that can be used for passengers... Especially with shorter vehicles, that's a big gain. But I, too, prefer bidirectional vehicles, as they are much more flexible, also halts can be built on either side of the ROW, so you can build a central platform where that is useful.
@OIG119
@OIG119 8 жыл бұрын
The problem with doors on one side is that when a train is running on the wrong side on a double tracked line, at every station, assuming they have side platforms with a minimum height of ~8 inches, you now have to step down farther onto the track in the same direction, when everything is going on fine. Having a cab at only one end is worse. It makes it harder to get a train going the other way on the same track (or not) because you now have to get to a loop or wye so turn the train.
@barvdw

Generally, there is a basic driver installation, just not a full cab at the end, so vehicles can be steered into a garage, for instance.

I think that the tram driver was driving though section insulator while accelerating, or slowing down instead of coasting, causing the arc to appear on the pantograph while it went through the section insulator. As the result, one of the parts of the section insulator shorted both sections to ground.

It's only 750VDC, so you have to touch it in order to get shocked. Though damaged wires are usually ought to be grounded first before they are deemed safe, at least they seem to have some customer-sense in mind in Belgium. In the Netherlands they would just keep everyone on BOTH trams for as long as it takes to get things safe before they would be allowed out. Most tramsystems in the Netherlands are small and still have infrastructure-engineers at their disposal so they usually arrive quickly. Be happy that this wasn't a Dutch train. Than you'd easily be stuck inside the train for an hour (but usually longer) until they fully resort the problem ánd got substitute transport (buses) arranged.

Well, there wasn't that much wrong in this instance. This most likely would not have happened in the Netherlands (I mean the passengers disembarking the tram that lost power and walking towards the other, walking along a road that can be considered dangerous and walking by a possibly live wire, not the separator melting, that could happen anywhere). In the Netherlands they would have deemed the situation to be too unsafe to exit the tram, keep everyone onboard and only let them out till police is there or members of staff manage to make sure power is off and the damage wire is grounded before anyone steps out. Belgians also handle 'acts of desparation' on a train differently then we do: they try to get everyone off the train as soon as possible, even if that involves calling in the army to aid in the evacuation of passengers from the train. In the Netherlands, keeping people on the train for 2 hours before substitute buses have arrived is VERY common. Been through it once and never want to experience it again: the impact and everything that comes straight after is no joke already, but people have no clue what all the noises, the violent movements of the train as it goes into emergency and everything that comes after that does to some of the passengers on board. All passengers were just left with their emotions. Most were shocked but okay, but some where walking up and down the stairs inside the carriages with a distant look and a completely pale appearance on their face, just repeating 'I want to get out. I want to get out!' while some were clinging on to the armrest of their chair almost chanting 'hell no, I'm not getting off this train... I'm NOT getting off this train!' No one EVER attended the passengers inside the train or at least made an announcement over the PA system that passengers who would like to talk to someone would have someone attending them as soon as possible. Till this day, it still haunts me in a certain way. Everytime a traindriver uses the horn, it throws me back almost 15 years, back to that moment the traindriver suddenly used both it's horns in rapid succession and I clearly knew something was wrong, with the impact and emergeny-braking following directly after. So, no, this is not at all bad service. They at least keep the customers in mind who didn't ask for this delay in the first place. It's just a bit of a pity the tram drives off without giving the other passengers a chance to get on board.

Amazing isn't it! Belgium, the heart of the EU; trams run on the wrong side, live power cables left dangling, passenger step off a tram into the path of another and all this from the centre of health and safety rule makers in Europe, amazing!

I have travelled to a lot of countries in the EU. All of them have less health and safety than the UK. The brexiteers made up any lie they could to make people vote for brexit. The health and safety in the UK is due to our culture, it has nothing to do with europe.

I'm sure if they kept you on the trams until there was a repair crew available you would have complained as well, the cable meltin was an accident, accidents happen! People walking on a busy road is their own stupid decision, and it would have been just as stupid to touch the cable, did you expect a rescue team too fall out of the sky magically just so they could fix this on the spot? I have used these trams on this very route many many times in my life (this is from Blankenberge to Zeebruges), and I can verify this is a very unusal situation and you just had bad luck.. There will always be people like you only looking for the worst and dramatize everything.. And to be honest, the only person I see walking by the cable is you..

ZombieXsniper Firstly, I don't consider how they handled the situation to be very professional. Of course the short circuit was an accident. Things do go wrong sometimes, but this is to do with the staff knowing how to adequately deal with these problems. The people were walking along the road as they had been directed to do so by the staff as they were told that the other tram would be carrying on its journey. One of the staff had told me that the tram would now be going (which is why I got back on it) and he had also told everyone on the other tram this. But the tram left before the people from the other tram had got to it. That was very unprofessional. Also saying that it is safe to have a live cable in easy reach is safe as nobody should be so stupid as to touch it is not an acceptable way of running an organisation. I am fed up of the way that EU health and safety stops people of doing so many things that are perfectly safe, but when there is a serious safety issue then H&S seems to get ignored. Another thing is that I told the driver about the cable and she was very rude and grumpy to me. Again, not at all professional. If someone alerts a staff member to a possible safety issue, then it should be taken seriously. And at the start of the video, having passengers getting out of the tram onto the tracks at stations isn't great. It is safe as long as the situation is under control and that drivers have good communication with each other, something that they showed to be lacking. The things that happened in this video showed up the fact that this is a very poor standard of competence with running a railway.

Well this can't comply with eu health and safety laws. Funny because the eu headquarters are in Belgium. The only country that fully follows the eu laws is probably the uk. What is funny is that the uk are leaving. 😂
