Our sweet goats, Willow & Winnie, finally have surgery today

Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

Very difficult, but necessary decision. Even if Winnie never developed the leg issues, it could show up in her offspring. It may not seem like that big of an issue. Female goats can only produce so many kids in their lifetimes. Winston on the other hand - and every buck from those lines - could have produced hundreds, if not thousands. All it takes is breeders overlooking or being unaware for issues like these to snowball. Since Penny's lines seemed to have a significant pass rate, it is safe to say that Winston who showed the debilitating defect would continue that as a dominant trait in his offspring. So for those that are maybe on the fence on why this had to happen - it is just extremely responsible not to allow any of that to happen. Even on a small scale, it just adds unnecessary burdens. So it is always nice to see breeders take this route to do their part to alleviate issues as they arise. To add as an aside - it is possible to breed out genetic defects, but it takes generations and years (talking decades or longer) of very careful breeding in a controlled environment. That would include a lot of culling. Every animal that isn't kept on that farm for the breeding would still need to be castrated/spayed for that to be done responsibly. For small hobby farms, it just isn't done. It is just more cost appropriate to start with and maintain healthy lines.

Wow I didn’t know that is how a goats uterus looks like, very educational. I am glad the cyst was also removed from Willow for her quality of life. Winnie and Winston will be happy at their new home with their aunt.

I was so worried when I read the title, but very relieved when I saw the surgery was the "fixing" surgery!!! The is a small silver lining in that they needed the surgery in that the cyst was found and removed before it had a chance to change if it could and shorten her life, so Yay!!! The silkie could be sitting on unfertilized eggs, just like Kiwi will do unless y'all put fertilized eggs under her. In a few weeks I would go out after dark and candle the eggs and remove any unfertilized, otherwise they'll rot and ooo is that gross. I say do it after dark as she be more asleep and less likely to abandon the nest. And yes she could be producing eggs that have been fertilized by Big Red!!! LOL!! Roosters are as bad as the bucks in being bent on insuring all females they can reach are mated!!

I love y’all’s vet. He’s the type of vet I wanted to be growing up. But at 14 I broke my back, pelvis, and left leg. There’s no way I could be lifting goats. So I decided on midwifery for humans. Back wasn’t strong enough for RN rotation that I needed, as I needed a BSN to get my CNM. Didn’t work out, so I became an RDA. Back injury, over 20 years later, took that from me as my hand dexterity was diminishing. So I became a caregiver for elderly with dementia, until my spine took my leg stability. I’m now 37 waiting on a full spinal fusion. And you, DaNelle, inspire me all the time. I feel like we have similarish stories in that respect, love caring for people and animals, but health got in the way. And you’ve found a way to maintain. I’m hoping after surgery (surgeries), I am capable of all that you can do. Thank you for these amazing videos of your lives on a homestead. Living my dream that for now I’ll share vicariously lol.

This is the best option available to most small farmers. Most farmers, including myself, would have no choice but to either continue the line and make it someone else's problem that would ruin our reputations or you need to cull the line out. I've had to cull several lines from my heard and it's heartbreaking, but this is a business at the end of the day and if you can't pencil out the math then it's not going to work. I'm so happy and proud of you for being in a position where you can keep your goats but make sure the overall success of the farm is guarded. Amazing and awesome work on your part.

Sweet babies, that must've been very stressful waiting for the surgeries and for them to wake up 💕

Aw, made my heart so sad, when you said that’s the end of the line. But you guys are such responsible breeders, and you sure produce pretty goats. Your herd is just going to get better and better! ❤️❤️

I was so conserned about Willow and Winnie, im glad they recovered safely. its sad to see Winnie and Winston go but its what is best for the farm and it would be too many goats. Im so happy you are keeping Willow though, it wouldnt be the same without her just like if Luna left.

I am sad that there won't be any more Willow babies, BUT I also respect your decision to stop that line and the leg issue. And I also love that you're keeping Willow.
