I built something similar last year, just a larger table. Man was it heavy once i put it all together. Used pallet wood for it. I wound up attaching the legs with inserts so they could be removed, and dropped in leg levlers to account for uneven floors

Sounds awesome man, I have a bad habit of building stuff so heavy I need help to get it off the work bench. I'd say this bench weighs about 50 lbs

For folks that dont know: squaring up the corners and sanding a little turns "ordinary" lumber into some pretty nice looking wood for projects. Thanks.

1:56 that’s not butcher block. Traditional butcher blocks are made of end grain, lot long grail. Long grain will quickly dull even the highest quality kitchen knives. However with end grain, the fibres split apart, helping to preserve the hone on the blade.
@OutoftheWoodsWork2 күн бұрын
Good thing I won't be cutting anything on this bench, by DEFINITION butcher block can be end grain OR edge grain. I also make knives, but the mansplanation is appreciated!

What kind of stain did you use? There isn't very much blotching. It looks like the wood is Doug fir and hemlock. Those types of wood are usually prone to blotching. Looks good!
@OutoftheWoodsWork3 күн бұрын
It's just your typical minwax stain. The wood is Southern Pine, the lack of splotchyness is due to to the amount of sanding I did and liberally applying the stain and fading it all together. Thank you for watching

Are there written pland with the measurements?
@OutoftheWoodsWork2 күн бұрын
No sir no written plans, I kinda just layed out some scrap pieces to mock up the design. Top is 44" Legs are 22" Bottom is 36" depth of everything is 12" and the slabs are 2 1/2" thick, all angles are 22 1/2°

The wood alone is more than 23 dollars. Current Box store prices for that wood is around 37 to 40 dollars.

@@OutoftheWoodsWork Great job BTW! I just checked my local HomeDepot in the DFW area of Texas and buying 5 after taxes is about $43. If you buy 50 or more at a time, that drops the price for 5 down to about $35 but still a good profit even with the higher cost.
@OutoftheWoodsWorkКүн бұрын
@jbb3141 You can also lower your costs by buying longer boards, it just happened everything worked out with the 8fts with very minimal drop, also I hate trying to manage 12-16ft boards in my shop

Nice bench, but if that lumber only cost you $23 to build it, you must have bought the lumber in 1973. Given the prices of lumber nowadays, nothing is cheap to build anymore unless it's made out of free pallets or cheap cedar pickets.

Why is it that the majority of "wood workers" with a you tube channel focus on cheap material, and short cutting effort for a quick, grossly over priced product?
@TimR10993 күн бұрын
Profit
@Itsreallymarcus3 күн бұрын
Because most of these KZbinrs show beginner friendly products because high end woodworkers aren’t sitting on KZbin watching others build. “Cheap materials” and basic tools are more in reach and easier to obtain for a mass majority of people looking for ideas. If you can do a much better job we are all waiting for your KZbin channel to start. Oh and just so you are aware, although this might not be “fine furniture” it has indeed many many times been proven you can in fact make very fine and professional grade furniture with pine and other soft woods found at your local home center. Your comment was made just to get a reaction because you wanted the attention for some reason. But I’ve seen people make thousands off smalls like this. People love to buy this kind of stuff. Not everyone is looking for that $30,000 custom walnut river epoxy table that will take you 2-4 months to build.
