Hi There thanks for the video. My current cord has a four prong that goes into that gen. and a 3 prong on the other end of the cord that goes into the plug attached to my sub-panel. I need a longer cable do the two hot wires go together on the the three prong end? Thanks Steve

Hey Steve, NO DONT DO THAT. in my opinion, I'm going to guess that the cable that's being used only has 3 wires black/white/green. And is only useing 120v from the generator.

I wonder if you could help me. I have a 4000W generator with a TT-30P outlet and I want to use a through-wall transfer kit with an L14-30R receptacle to pass electricity into my house. I have the RV plug, a length of 4-wire 10 gauge cord and the L14-30R adapter. When running the wires from the RV plug to the adapter, do I tie the two hots together at the plug so that I have all 4 wires at the adapter, or do I use only one hot and leave one unused? Thanks...

Great question!! Most RV plugs are only rated for 125v. You will need to buy a 4 wire outlet in order to care the 240v load to the house. In my video on back feeding an electrical panel I explain how to do that. I hope this helps. Thanks for the question!! CM

For an inverter generator that only supplies 120 volt power, how do you wire a power cord to feed an electrical panel? I also have a 240v 14KW diesel generator that correctly wired with a manual transfer but prefer to not to run when I don't need to. I have an RV outlet 240v 30amp I would like to use for the inverter generator. Can you jumper the X, Y connection to feed the panel with the panel isolated ( mains disconnected using the manual generator interlock). I'm only looking to power a gas furnace, refrigerator, and freezer during the night time.

Just wondering the difference in videos.

@@Bluesman57 Licensed electrician or not, you are wrong. The X and Y can be different at both ends, since the load won't be affected by it. Each leg will be 120V and 240V across both. With a single phase source it won't matter.

One of the benefits of making your own cable is that you can have whichever connectors make sense electrically, eliminating points of resistance & heat. Adapters are OK in a pinch, but every plug-in connection is gonna have a bit more resistance than uninterrupted copper wire.

I have a question. I bought an oven cable (NEMA 15-50P), and attached a NEMA (15--30P) on the otherside for one of my device. I do not know the wiring on the 15-50p, so I cannot know if black or red is on x (or y). Is that something I need to worry about on the 15-30p side? I know you can interchange x and y if done on both sides, but is it OK if X on one end goes the Y on the other end, and vice versa?
@barneyrubble4827
@barneyrubble4827 3 жыл бұрын
In 220 single phase, the 2 hot wires are inter changeable. The device doesn't care bout the color of wire, only that it's getting 110v through X & Y. For continuity sake, i wire each plug the same way cause I feel more comfortable. If you were using one of these plugs to wire a 220v 3(industrial) phase with 3 hot leads and a neutral, it would most definitely matter that both,plugs were wired the same

I have aTHEORETICAL question. IF I turn OFF the main breaker from my house and then turn off every breaker in the panel and want to use a generator, can I plug in to an existing exterior receptacle from my generator. If the electricity is going to this receptacle would it power ONLY this breaker if I turned it on or can I turn on another breaker to use that breaker as well.I have a 2000watt generator and would only use maybe 1000-1500 watts total.
@barneyrubble4827

With the main panel switch turned off, connecting the Gen to a breaker will backfeed the whole panel with if using a 2 pole(220v) breaker or half the panel if using a single pole(110v) breaker. Doing this w/o a proper generator safety switch is very dangerous tho cause if by mistake somehow the main panel switch was accidentally turned on while Gen was actively backfeeding that breaker...VERY VERY BAD!!!! Also, if power employee is working to restore a line and main switch gets turned on, you could electrocute him. He thinks the line is dead but it's not.

Craig? Here's my question. It seems that everyone wires a FEMALE out-let to their fuse box to plug-in their Generator. Here we have a Female out-let on the Generator. Here we have a Female outlet at the fuse box. To connect the generator to the fuse box will require a cord with two Male connectors. I had to wire a MALE connector to my breaker box to avoid cutting my brand new 10/4 Generator cable. Is it normal for your breakers to become warm considering we are now back feeding with a generator.
