Let's make a book press! I have wanted to try my hand at bookbinding for a while now. Since I am planning on tackling this one soon I figured it would be a good idea to make this book press first!

Looking good! You can also make your own paper sheets for your book. Shred some scrap paper (you can bleach it if needed) in a blender with water until you have a pulp that is goopy. Make a frame a bit larger than the sheet size you want. The frame must have a screen on the bottom. Pour your slurry pulp onto the screen and spread it evenly. Press with a board sized to fit into the frame and squeeze out all of the water. you should now be able to remove the wet sheet and set it aside to dry. Later it can be trimmed to the right size and the off cuts can be reused in the next pulp. The paper won't be as smooth as manufactured paper but had more texture and character, feels rustic and heterogeneous.

This sounds like it would be a lot of fun! I shall add this to the list and maybe the next book I make will be from 100%scratch 😀

I've made do for years with bits of board and stacks of heavy books. Book presses are kind of a luxury item rather than a necessity starting out.

I bought a sewing pattern, and am going to try sewing in the next few weeks. That pattern looks like Greek to me, but I saved your video from several months ago about how to read and sew patterns, and I feel much better about it!

Looks good, but don't stain the inside of your press, that part which would be in contact with your book. The chemicals can transfer to your pages or your leather and mess up the PH balance too.

Recently, there's a really cheap one you can cobble together for about $25. Several cutting boards have notched corners and are heavy enough to work, there's silicone covers on the corners that can be pried off with little effort. Then it's some long bolts and wing nuts with washers to put in the notches.

I, just had a massive brain surge watching this episode. I have been wanting to "obtain", a press to use in making wet/beeswax formed pressed leathers. Such as in knife sheaths. Now I have the starting point for my projects. Once again, you have solved a problem for me. Thank you.

I’ve seen a few ‘similar’ presses, but yours is the first I’ve seen with a handle on top! Looks great! My “book press” is still just a heavy stack of books! Maybe one day I’ll get around to making one as pretty as yours! Haha

Hears a challenge for you. How about a simple printing press so you can start making your own how-to books that you'll later press and bind.
@SkillTree
@SkillTree 3 жыл бұрын
That would be cool! With the little movable script stamps! I immagine that is quite the undertaking though.

From a bookbinding perspective, these 'presses' serve little purpose. The pressure exerted by those wing nuts is minimal and is usually not balanced. Stick with the two boards and put 2 bricks on top. Much better!
