You can also cut in a small magnet to hold the book closed. You will have to cut the magnet in the book part deep enough so that the magnet glued to the cover will seat down flush in the hole.

There are faster ways of doing this. I made one for each member of my family by taking a book, folding the cover boards back and sandwiching the pages between two pieces of 1/4” plywood. Clamp the book in place then drill a 3/8” hole through the center of the whole thing (not through the cover boards) Now take either a power jigsaw or a coping saw, put the blade through the hole and cut out your rectangle. The plywood will keep the pages firmly in place. Now you’ll have your box shaped book, but the pages will still fan. Open the book and line the inside with glue covered sheets of paper and you’re done. The whole process takes less than an hour.

Yeah, I found two very thick, large, old Harry Potter books yesterday at a thrift shop. Perfect size! Personally I could care less about Harry Potter, but I was afraid someone else might not like that I gutted those old books. I’m making one of these for a 12 year old’s birthday gift. I ended up getting a cheap hard cover cookbook, and 2nd book: Hunchback of Notre Dame with gold edge pages.

i dont like adding glue to the outside of the pages because its to obvious when you see the top of the book that its glued together. i clamp the book down to cut it and then glue the inside after so you cant tell its there.

Hi! i am making one of these for my friend and i glued about 15 pages or so in the front so i could keep the front page art but now there is a huge crease that makes it almost impossible for the book to stay closed on its own. Is there any way I can get rid of the crease? Or is there an easy way to remove the glue to reglue it? PLEASE HELP!

I’ve watched probably a dozen videos and learn something from every single one. Several have used Mod Podge. I’m in the process of making one now but haven’t used the Mod Podge yet because it says on the bottle it takes a month to cure. I got a matt Mod Podge because I don’t want shine. I primed my books with gesso. Then I’ll paint one of the two books white. One book has a cool cover so I’ll maybe découpage a little something on it, but leaving the book design open for ideas. BTW, there’s a great KZbin video for Mod Podge. Definitely worthy checking it out, even if you’ve used it before. It’s so versatile! I know your question is a few months old, but maybe my answer will still help someone.

It's always funny seeing all the hiding places posted. There are several very good ones on the side bar of this post. The pocket in the book is probably 200-300 years old. It's still a good one...ready for it .BUT Here's a hint... Stand by your book shelf and look at the top edges of the books. Are any of them nice and shiny from being coated with glue. You can also feel it. Just run you fingers across the tops edges of the books feel any smooth NO. It will take more time and care but glue the pages inside after you cut your pocket. Also don't glue any pages before the pocket. Simple fix Next... are you books in order by height? Keep your book in order. Are they alphabetical? Keep it in order. By topic.. 3 dictionaries and one in stuck over in the cook books. Get the idea. MONEY doesn't need a pocket and don't keep it all in one place. Catch a book sale at the library or toss outs. Get several book that look like what's on your bookshelf. Tape an envelope in the middle the book. If Joe crook suspects s hiding place the easiest way to check out a bookshelf is to flip the book off the shelves. When they hit the floor anything in them falls out. MOSTLY DON"T TELL ANYONE ABOUT YOUR HIDING PLACES.
