When I need to secure a zipper to keep the ends together, I zig-zag across the teeth, and my needle doesn't ever need to get between the teeth. I wondered why you didn't do that, but then I was thinking that maybe the machine you are using is straight-stitch only?

Hi Rob. I love your videos and the variety of projects you do. I’m definitely going to make the boxed bag but am not brave enough to stitch over the brass zipper! Do you think a wide zig zag with a very short stitch length so that it sews almost on the spot as it zig zags across the teeth will work?

If you set your zigzag to its widest and shortest stitch then you don’t need to worry about breaking a needle. Just zigzag several stitches across the zipper and use your fabric glue to secure it.
