Welocme to the workshop. In this video I make a card scraper from an old handsaw, Its great to recycle and make your own tools! Cabinet scrapers are great for tackling that tricky grain that can tear out!

I made half a dozen different sized ones out of a hand saw last year. FYI - I use an old chefs steel as a burnisher - it works really well. I also finished the holding (back, cut) edge with a line of electricians tape - so I know which is the business end!

Neat idea, although it gave me flashbacks of when I was a sprog and given blocks of metal to file back square.

Wow! Excellent idea. Well done, John. And an excellent way to spend a stormy day. James over at Wood by Wright sells burnishers. All you need is to add your own handle. They even come with ferrules!! Really nice burnishers. Thanks again, John,

Great information as always! I notice that you did not 'draw out' the edge with the burnisher before rolling the edge. was there a reason? if you do, it makes the rolling over just a couple of swipes of the burnisher.

Never thought of using a screwdriver as a burnisher. But thinking about it as long as it is harden it would be the same thing Great video. You should try making a marking knife from a disk saw blade for a video

Good idea,if you have some contacts with someone who works at a sawmill. Get a large broken piece of a bandsaw blade, I've made several card shapes from the blade. Sawmill where I work,I got a broken piece 1/8"×36"×48",the steel is harden and tempered for extreme working applications, also resistant from oxidation because water is an application for a coolant and lubrication, metal elements are chromium,carbon steel with a very high yield strength, when cutting the steel keep it cool ,do not discolouration the steel to a straw blue colour,also it can be shaped and bent into formation by heat treatment. Ok let's get to it.

Nicely done John, don't throw out the remainder of that saw plate, even the small parts will make good scratch stock material. Not sure if you can do much with the circular saw blades though, they're very thick for scrapers. Maybe for scratch stocks, but that's a bit of work to shape them. If you're thinking of getting a purpose-made burnisher, I'd can't recommend the Arno burnisher enough, it was what got me from cant-sharpen-this to this-is-easy with scrapers.

i tried this from a small cheapo plastic handle stanley saw, didn't work, can't tell if it's the steel or my sharpening that sucks. Any thoughts?

John another great video but can I just ask a couple of questions. The size is 6 x 3“ is it the 3 inch end what you’ve burnished over to make a cutting edge think I’ve got it in my brain how it works just confirming did you use two nice bits of wood to make a nice handle as well for it so got a better grip
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I burnished the 6 inch edge. I didn't use any wood for a grip its just the card itself.

Thanks John forgetting back to me. Okay I’ve got the idea now. Why I said about a couple of pieces of wood either side of it to make a nice handle for gripping. I will definitely make one or two of these these will be great for the green book working I’ve took up and specially when I build a chair.. and been thinking could use a round file to bend it round that should be hard and still fingers crossed

Would an old circular saw blade work just as well? I ask as I have one but not a redundant saw? Thank You
@JohnMcGrathManInShed
@JohnMcGrathManInShed 3 жыл бұрын
it can do, just depends on the thickness. either way there is good steel in a saw blade
