A fast trick I use for color holds on lines is to set the line art color to about 70-75% gray, then change it from 'normal' to 'soft light'. Then I copy the layer, place it above the original, and set that one to 'multiply' at 30%. As long as you don't color outside the lines, it's an instant color hold.

one simple way to do those color hold lines that you did is the following: 1. duplicate your flats, 2. hit it with a gaussian blur, 3. then select your line art>convert to quick mask 4.darken with hue/saturation. boom. Then you can go back in and adjust the details, but it'll do a pretty good job for most of it

Hi Trent.! I have a couple questions. I’m 13 and I wanna get into this art high school next year. They want me to put a drawing of my bedroom and outside my window in my portfolio. I’ve never done environments so I was wondering if you can tell me where to start and the most efficient way to get quality environments before applications close. Also after high school what next? I watched your video on different types of job in the game industry and the ones that perked my interest were Illustrator, 3D artist, 2d mobile artist character skin concept artist, environment concept artist and UI artist. I really wanna be an illustrator working for studios like riot games or something like that. Probably freelance at some point too. So should I start with freelance and then start applying for jobs at studios? How should I go about freelance and studio jobs? Can I work at a studio and have other things on the side too? If you have any tips for me right now or things I can do once I get in high school please tell me.! I really love your work and you helped me to much. :) EDIT: Turns out my mom can’t afford the school I wanted to go to but I’m still applying for others. So if you can just answer my other questions that would be great :).

If you want cleaner color lines, without going through the trouble of cleaning the jagged edges do the following: -Create New Layer above your line art -Right-click and press Create Clipping Mask -Color on your new Clipping Mask Layer Another easier and faster way to do it and gives you more control with Color Balance -Duplicate your line art -Press "/" key next to right shift on your keyboard That locks your layer pixels and you can't draw outside of that layer's pixels
@st-hugs4 жыл бұрын
This really helps, especially since I have a somewhat slightly painterly style for colouring sometimes but never really know how to balance the colours or what to do with the linework (as I absolutely rely on it way too much and am afraid of getting rid of it haha) I seem to use a lot of saturated colours, I think desaturating will help a lot.. Hi Trent, I would love your experienced input on the following question: What do you think is the best way to fail hard, fail big and fail fast in digital art?
@TrentKaniuga4 жыл бұрын
The question presupposes that there is a such thing as success. There is not. Every piece is a failure. The question is, what did you learn? With that in mind... the answer to your question is to do as many paintings as possible. But I don't believe in calling it "failure". The intention is to learn with every painting to improve, knowing that it is ultimately futile.
@burcuterzioglu47784 жыл бұрын
You can also try to recrate your favorite artist's pieces and try to to make it as accurate as possible. At the end it probably won't be a exact copy but you will be able to clearly see what your piece lacks and try to improve from that.

yeah... that's the pressure that I live with, and it's the reason I quit making comics. lol. There are a lot of ways to cheat it, which I talk about in many of my photoshop cheat videos, but ultimately you have to find a middle ground where it's rendered, but not so much that it consumes all of your time.

I made a video about how much money concept artists make. You should watch that one. The short answer is that Artists should expect to make money. A reasonable salary for starting is 35-50 thousand dollars per year if you are just getting started. That's also assuming that you're working 10 hours per day 5-6 days per week.

When you said this piece "wouldn't be used for concept art" did you mean even after you painted over the original? I'm trying to get into the industry and most studios in my area are asking for "non-realistic, mass appeal style" and their projects are games like Dauntless or Luigi's Mansion, which definitely have a cartoony element. I'm getting rejections or crickets still in trying to apply so far (creature and character concept as the positions prop up) and it's a bit frustrating though I'm willing to put in the effort to improve if only I knew what my problem area were! You suggested I study artists like Brom, which is a good start though I've been told it's still too much "realism," oof! You've seen my portfolio before but I'll include it for reference: www.artstation.com/samuska Hope you have a good weekend, and thanks for all the incredibly valuable content! I have a number of your gumroad works that I'm working with now as well. :)
