Very nice design. I am building something very similar. I do believer you could even make it larger with the rated torque on that motor. Working with what you have available is also a great lesson.

I like this approach. Add some "combs" to the bottom or "upward" side of the cutting blades to scrape off the plastic so it doesn't just wrap around the cutting bar. Consider something tighter fitting for the stationary spacer bar.

Thank you for this. I wanted to make my own, but cannot afford the necessary parts. Instead of using a motor (right now) I am trying to figure out a hand crank for it. Perhaps reusing an old bike's foot pedal.

You have to make the opposite shape on the other ring.. when the two rings have opposite shapes, then the cut will be perfect even if you only use one rotating shaft

I am going to try this with a few different power sources. I have an old giant corded drill, an old circular saw and some newer 18v cordless tools as well. If I wanted to get some exercise I guess I could use a bike to power it to. Thanks for the idea.

I am in desperate need of information that online ai ebay and other are absolutely no help. First i know there are many variables but i need sone place to start. I need a gearbox to hook up to a small shredder designed for a hand crank. I want to hook up either a bema 34 stepper or servo of which i have each. I also have a 2 hp “1500kw” servo. Lathe and mill to adapt motor to gearbox but i just have no idea what gearbox i need. Saw a video that was using to planetary and stepper but no info on gearbox. I need a model ir something to start looking at. I can get scooter gearboxes snd other i just beed some idea. How much torque do i need for shredding 3d prints

maybe nails for the backer plate of the piece of wood used to stop the notched washers from spinning? Nails have a higher sheer strength? idk. This is really cool and I see that its a prototype! Would you need all blades to turn on both rods?

Hi Dennis. Yes, I've seen a lot of designs that use gears to have both rods turn the blades into each other, and they seem to be a lot more efficient. For me, given that I was mainly using free, leftover stuff, to make this shredder (and using gears would require more precise measurements on the holes, etc, and probably metal sides), I opted to go with a single moving rod, because it was just a lot simpler, to test it out and get it working. But yeah, definitely, having both rods turn would be a great idea! Maybe reinforcing the sides with some scrap sheet metal might make it plausible to mount some gears on there and try it. Thanks!

Hi sorry for the delay in reply. For a more typical system, it's usually something like: nominal torque >= 200 Nm, speed, ~70 r/min, and for something small like this one, you can reduce it appropriately depending on what you want to rip apart. Sheets of thin HDPE are much easier than thick bottle caps, so different types/thicknesses will affect your minimum values here. Good luck!

But the washers arent keyed onto the shaft so why dont they spin?

Thanks so much for the question. they would slip, if they're not tightly screwed together; tension/friction will keep them together, when you tighten them. better if the washers are a little rusty, so you can put a little acid on them for a few days (in case you need to be able to make adjustments later). or, if they're brand new washers and thus a little slippery, you can actually use gorilla glue, which expands after setting, and keeps it pretty tight, but is still removable if you need to make changes later on. the absolutely best way to do it is to use a weld-like steel epoxy, but then you're probably going to have a very hard time separating them later on if you ever need to make changes. again, my goal with this thing is to try and use basic tools or glues that are accessible to students; welding or precision keying would probably be a little too hard for young people. it's not industrial grade of course, but it does work for a very long time without maintenance.
