This is rather an open loop current limiting circuit, but not a regulator. As it works in open loop it cannot be characterized as regulator. Regulators adjust the load voltage (or current) automatically, by using a feedback loop at the output, which this circuit misses. Here, the voltage across the load, especially if it is a motor, will never be stable. It will always depend on its mechanical load. The same holds true for variances of the battery voltage. It will cause relevant variances in the load supply and therefore in the motor’s running speed, that is, there is no regulatory action at all. Only rough adjustment.

ALEFILES Of course! Just hit for the LM 317 data sheet in google and you will get plenty of such ideas. Or hit for adjustable power supply using the LM317 here, in KZbin. The classic design goes from 1,2V up to 30V. As regards the intensity, it usually is 3A using external transistor but it can be more extended by paralleling properly more transistors in the output.

Could you not make the same without the mosfet? using current control (variable resistor/pot) which would have the same "function". Without looking up the fets, you have a current with PWM switch as the Pot adjusts the gate.

How would you ensure equal current through the Fets? Maybe a small resistor say 2.2Ohm before you join the source pins together?

When paralleling mosfets, no current sharing resistors are necessary due to their own nature. So you simply parallel them. Current sharing resistors are used when we use bipolar power transistors at the output, such as the well known 2N3055. In this case we put a sub-ohm resistor (usually 0,22 or 0,47 Ohm) on each emitter of every transistor and finally we connect all the free terminals of the resistors together. This is the common emitter of all the paralleled transistors. You can hit on KZbin “paralleling power transistors “ for more valuable information, such as how to calculate the value of these current sharing resistors.

Vertical FET’s (most switching FET’s) have positive temperature coefficient untill fairly high current. For high current on/off switching direct parallel connection is acceptable but not so much for linear use. At low currents the hotter device will draw more and more current as it heats up more and more. Why are you using two FET’s? I guess they just happened to be reasonably well matched so they work good enough connected directly for the low currents you demonstrate.

Think its more of a current limiting circuit.. the voltage is not regulated but the current is somehow controlled by the pot.. seems like a current amplifier also but not sure. All im sure of is its not regulating any voltage.

Hello, very nice video ! the output DOES not change compared to the LM317 circuit where you LOOSE 2v. BRAVO ! However, it is too SENSITIVE, how can we adjust the voltage more smoothly, it jumps from 2v to 9v very quick. I tried 20K, 100K and 10K potentiometers, but still very hard to linearly adjust. Any idea how to resolve this ???
