I love this video, but it's important to remember if you're intending on selling your game, you shouldn't consider your own labour as free. If you're going to sustain yourself off of your business, you need to be able to make a livable wage. You need to know how much that wage would cost, then compare it to how much money you expect to make, and then again to how much money you actually make after selling your game.
@Arkylie6 жыл бұрын
Well... I'm assuming that anyone trying their hand at games for the first time, with zero budget and few to no team members, is not anticipating a return on their time investment. They are learning skills that may eventually lead to money gigs, but often will not. When I write fanfiction, it's a significant time investment, but I get paid in the way my fans comment and the joy of having created a cool thing that exists now. My dad, however, keeps seeing things always in terms of money, and every time he tries to say I should be earning money off my fanfiction efforts, it feels more and more like he's belittling what I'm actually doing. Not everything needs to be done for money. There's a whole Creative Commons movement right now, and in fact that's one of the things I was down here in the comments to say: You don't have to make your own music (Incompetech.com) or sound effects, there are communities that have made tons of game graphics (Charas Project) for use in noncommercial games (and almost certainly groups that create graphics for use in commercial games as well), you can get free photos (Unsplash, Pixabay) that don't even need to be credited -- there's just a ton of resources out there, because some people have found it more pleasing to create things for the free use of others than to get directly paid for them. Or, rather, they tend to consider that their money comes from a small percentage of those who make use of their products, and they freely offer the product to the people who don't pay for it. Once you move into more serious efforts to actually sell your product, you'll probably need to create your own material, or hire people to make unique pieces -- people get turned off by seeing that your characters are the default RPG Maker characters, or hearing the same incompetech piece they've heard everywhere -- but for getting a start in programming, especially hobbyist programming, there's no need for ANY budget, and you needn't feel like you've wasted your time just because you didn't get paid for it.

Thanks for the distribution advice! I was a "fluent" programmer in Visual Basic in the 2001-2007 range, C++ in 2003-07 and C# I think in 2005-07.. also webdesign crap like Javascript/Html/Css 01-07 and Php/Sql 03/4-07. in 07 I joined the US military and haven't coded anything besides little side tools that made my job easier since then. I'm just getting back into it, as my passion pre-military was game development. While I've only been through a couple of your videos so far, your channel is awesome and I'm extremely thankful it's here, considering - aside from a very good long-term memory - I'm basically starting from scratch here, haha!
@nodvick7 жыл бұрын
I started work on a game in raw C#, since by far it is my favorite programming language... got quite a bit done (back-end of: the combat system, data saving & loading, inventory, armor, stats, temporary boosts, etc.. very basic stuff) then started work on the engine/front end.. realized how god awfully long it would take and started looking into other engines out there. downloaded unity and unreal, very happy to see unity is C# and have already redone my code to fit the unity framework, and full of inspiration for what to do with my game idea. I'm so used to using raw C# I keep running into places where I write code to handle something, then find out that C# handles exactly that for you and I can set up unity to do it then scrap 50-200 LOSC (lines of source code).. it frustrates me that I already spent time writing it, but I really like it when I find out that these little things have already been taken care of for when I need to do similar things in the future. Before I get too far into it though I'm currently downloading the unreal engine and am going to port the code over to C++ and redo everything in unreal an see which one I truly like better, but to be honest I'm hoping I'll enjoy unity more just from what I've seen and heard from your videos. Even if using Unreal will get me more purchases from the fanboys in the future xD!

Hi taira, thank you for the video! Oh I thought of an idea from this video How about a video series where you teach a coding language like say, c# using a topic as reference. It can be anything from games to just applications. For example, you can make a video series on teaching Javascript, each episode you take a game, say Tetris and in the video, you teach the ins and outs of the terms used when making Tetris using Javascript I'm short, a series where you teach a coding language based on different topics with explanation of the terms inside Please tell me what you think xD

I actually consider "$0 budget" as part of my mission statement once I play my hand to the game development. Since I built my desktop PC, I want to start from the ground up with $0 on hand for game investment, and use what I earn from games to invest. I consider the use of Unreal Engine, Blender, and some others to stay true to the $0-fund start scenario, while satisfying certain things that would make my OC-like senses flip if I overlook them such as having control over splash screens or opening cinematics. It would be better for me to start low-poly, since I am still learning in Blender. Other software would be GIMP (art/textures), Musescore (MIDI), and few still in consideration.

For the new programmers out there, just learn C#. It's a lot stricter than JavaScript which some might see as unnecessarily difficult, but that only makes it more rigid, easier to program and to know what your code does when you look at it again in 6 months. C# is also a good stepping stone into C++, a language you will absolutely, 1000% need to be familiar with in the video game industry. It's a super powerful language that's been around almost 40 years and remains the ipso facto programming language of AAA game developers. It's the language you would be using if you were to program for something like UE4. All-in-all, in my opinion, the only thing JavaScript can give you is bad habits and when you get more advanced, you'll find yourself fighting with the language more and more to do something that's relatively straight forward in a lower-level language.

Hey there. Loved your video and actually subscribed to your channel. I'd like to ask if you would be interested in making more tutorials about making a game with these tools? Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.

SketchUp for very simple concept designs. You used MagicaVoxel cause you're not good at all at modeling but SketchUp is extremely simple but it's also so simple and easy that you can learn to use it in a day or even just an hour maybe. Blender for modeling and animating. Krita for artwork. OpenToonz for traditional animation. And Unity or Unreal for the game. And it's free

You can find an older computer at some donation centers, or usually friends/family might be willing to give up old tech, I got my first computer for free, a 2004/5 HP Pavilion (in 2011/12) from my cousin, and I just recently got a 2009 MacBook for $30, from a friend of mine who was given the computer for free. You can walk to the nearest library, or if you're going to school, have access to the internet at the library there. (I'm a university student, and as such, free internet and library use, although I have to pay tuition.) All in all, it's not to farfetched to be able to truly make a game for 100% free.
