Be careful with items like those washers. They appear to be plated and plating materials can lead to toxic fumes when welded.
@davidg1950
@davidg1950 8 жыл бұрын
+Pat McBride Very good point!! I would say YES zinc welding is very hazardous. But the people that do these projects should know this in advance. I would put those that do not thoroughly check these hazardous things out first as being totally stupid. And I would hope that those who do want to try out these experimental projects will get their ducks in a straight row before just jumping in. For one thing working with electricity is the number one thing in killing very many DIYers. So for anyone trying to make anything using electricity I say KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!! Period! I have been shocked by everything from high amperage 12 volt capacitors to 480 volt. The worst was a 208 volt circuit that I only had one phase turned off. Oh and where a good mask when welding Zinc!!!
@dingdingdingdiiiiing
@dingdingdingdiiiiing 8 жыл бұрын
+Pat McBride every welding process releases more or less toxic fumes, but you're right, zinc and nickel are not to be messed with, I always get rid of the coating with acid. The real problem though, is the chromium, you can only grind it off...

+eraldorh yeah youtube payment doesn't work like you probably think. its not view based (well views are relevant but ill explain in a minute). when you monitize a video, youtube place ads in your videos, and a portion of the profits youtube make from the ads on your videos (i dont know the exact amount but its pretty small, my friend has like 4000 views and allows ads and he checked how much hes earned, 10p... in like 14 months) is diverted to you.

Michael Wiegand Yes dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. However 2V is not going to hurt you. You can hold on the the electrodes all day long with the power on with no problem. My commercial spot welder does not have a breaker or a fuse. He is using wood. What better insulation. I get that you are warning of potential dangers but that goes with using any power tool. Common Sense may not be so common with some people. Those people should stay away from any project that uses electricity or any sharp objects for that matter.

Great build, but please take under consideration of the cost for ALL materials. I hate it when video makers don't take under consideration that others might not have the parts required for the build already available (tools excluded of course). So in the future, please don't say that it is only a few bucks when you could be spending $100+.

Do they have craigslist where you live? Or something like it? Do they have scrap yards or metal recycling businesses? No matter who you are or where you live, if you want one you can get a MOT for less than $10. What else is there? Some wire? Some wood? Even if the whole thing costs you $20, compared to $150-250 this is a freebee

I think people need to realize if your looking to make a spot welder. you need at least some basic hand tools To even do this project. I'm 32 years old and I am a tinker and back yard mechanic by hobby. It took me years to accumulate hand tools wrenches machines etc. I always have scrap wood and misc screws and wire I save. If I did this project it would cost next to nothing. But a beginner could buy a cheap hand drill and hack saw and some wood screws.

@jeffreydeutsch7336
@jeffreydeutsch7336 8 жыл бұрын
He only has a couple of turns of wire for the secondary he added to that salvaged microwave transformer. That is only going to produce a couple of volts. You couldn't shock a mosquito with it. It will produce masses of current if shorted. Go touch the terminals of your car battery and see that you feel nothing. They wouldn't leave it exposed if it was dangerous, yet it supplies 150 Amps to crank the starter. In fact people use car batteries to spot weld instead of the transformer in this video.

Jeffrey Deutsch Thanks Jeffrey. I am still gun shy from when I was 10 and held angle iron for my Dad to tac with his arc. Never a problem before, but his time when he touched the stick, the 220 curled my arms and after 40 years I forget the technical reason it happened and I am a bit paranoid, lol
@FlexDRG

scott lund dad probably forgot the groundwire and you became the ground conductor. and arc welders use a higher voltage than the about 2volts this spotwelder uses.
@scottlund4562
@scottlund4562 8 жыл бұрын
Jaden Smith Technically when you bring the two tips together, you are touching both terminals as you hold the metal. I was concerned about becoming the ground as what happened when I was young. What FlexDRG said about it having minimal shock value helped....yet I am still a bit shy. I apreciate the heads up though, thank you
@FlexDRG
@FlexDRG 8 жыл бұрын
scott lund holding the metal inbetween the electrodes won't shock you. your resistance is much to high, certainly compared to the electrodes & wiring so all current will stay within the cirquit and not flow through you.

It would be amazing to have a big pile of junk laying around just so I can melt a couple nails together. Save 200 dollars and spent a week making a wooden fire starter. If you dont have a job then you wont lose money making it! Totally safe and after a day of use hopefully you will still have your vision and not look like fredy Krueger. Built yours today!

Good gosh, thanks for the post! I do not even have to have to make a home depot run for this! There have been so many times I would have used this rather than pull out the Mig. I think ill bore the arms and run the leads up inside the arms but for most people this may not be a option (less common tools/drills). Great job, thank you for taking the time to post this and so many other things. Btw am I correct that this will draw the same amps as the original microwave? I have a couple of push button reset breakers (10 and 15a) and I am thinking of using one. (again the odd things I have here, I serviced electric door openers, mostly garage type for 18 years and saved old stuff cause you never know when you going to need a relay, contactor or other odd part). Thanks again

You could probably save yourself a lot of effort by just re-purposing old welding wires.
@A1Skeptic
@A1Skeptic 8 жыл бұрын
Anyone copying this fine project should consider adding a relay between that little interlock switch and the transformer. All microwave ovens have a relay or triac that switches power to the main transformer. The little interlock door switch does not, and is not rated to handle the full current draw of the transformer. [ I note here that it obviously worked in the video, but that doesn't mean it wasn't limiting power or heating excessively which could be dangerous in one's hand.] The switch should control the relay which then can supply full power to the transformer, safely. TLDR: I'm suggesting a small improvement for a great project.

@A1Skeptic
@A1Skeptic 8 жыл бұрын
No, the power relay is generally a large stand alone relay about two inches square. Newer ovens may do away with the relay and use a large power transistor or triac to control power to the transformer and so to the magnetron.. You can trace the power lead back from the primary of the large transformer to figure out what they are using to switch power. The secondary of the transformer will be connected to a capacitor, diode, and the magnetron.

it doesn't conduct electricity, is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, and if it does somehow manage to catch fire, you use the fire extinguisher you should have nearby.
@selfishlyintrigued
@selfishlyintrigued 10 жыл бұрын
Not really. The reason tools and other stuff aren't made of wood isn't because it'd catch fire easily but because of weight. We use metal boxes because they are strong and light, but honestly the best and safest boxes tend to be plastic banana boxes. Though plastic is even easier to catch fire then wood. Electricity causes electrical fires only during improper wiring, or people being dumb. Most electrical fires happen in bedrooms using extension cords that get pinned under heavy dresses or bedframes that end up breaking the insulation and leading to exposed arcing wires.

The tips will last longer and stick less if you tilt the part being welded. So that the left of one electrode and right of the other contact the item and the current flows through on the diagonal. Also mount it on a bench and add a cord or wire connected to a foot pedal to free a hand. Could even add a spring to make the pedal two stage, one stage to contact the part and with a bit more pressure the second stage engages the switch.
