I’m glad to see old pros lay something out funky, too! 😂 I always figure it out right after I start cutting. I hate tight turtlenecks as well, so I do cowl necks instead. I just used my drafted pattern to make a sweater dress and had barely enough fabric, so I pondered a lot before cutting. It was still one of my better efforts! I love that fabric, it came out very well. I always put my pins parallel to the serger presser foot about an inch away so I won’t forget and run over them. And then just adjust the edges as I sew.

Haha, yes, I always leave in my goof ups instead of editing them out, but they don't usually happen right off the bat! Good tip about pinning far from the edge when serging.

Yay! Thanks! I love a mock neck turtle neck shirt with no cuffs! I run hot, so prefer the appearance of a turtle neck versus an actual turtle neck. You mentioned sewing on the the sewing line versus corner to corner, I had trouble seeing it in the many colors of the sweater. Maybe you could point it out again in an upcoming video, thanks!

I'm the complete opposite, I love turtleneck tops. I really want to start making clothes but haven't got the nerve to try yet. I have altered a top recently and I have combined two tops to make a new top. It looked nice but was a bit tight. I have also converted tops into accent pillows cases too, that was fun. I have some things I want to alter before our cruise in April too but I bought them new so I'm afraid to ruin them, lol. I'll figure it all out eventually. Lovely turtleneck my dear.

That turned out just beautifully - love that fabric! I have learned how to make turtlenecks this fall/winter and made several for myself, using my basic bodice block as a starting point. Love the way you did the bottom hem with that stabilizing tape. Great tip! And great call on recutting that front bodice too - I usually buy about half a yard more than I think I'll need if there is a repeating pattern because I just know I'll want to recut something or other! :) Makes me feel better that an expert like you also has to recut sometimes! :)

Catherine it looks great. Marking some fabric is very frustrating. My best method is the little chalk wheel you can get. Makes a lovely clear thin line I've found. All the best. 🙂

Great timing, I just bought fabric for a turtleneck and was going to use my long sleeve t shirt pattern. I'll check my neck line. I always wondered if hemming the sleeves first, if you know the length is oerfect, while the fabric is still flat was ok.

Thank you so much for not editing out those oops moments, we all make them! I wanted to ask your opinion on sergers, I would like to buy one but have a small budget. I wonder if you have any experience or knowledge about/with a beginner level Singer serger, it is within my budget and has good reviews, I’m not really sure what qualities a good serger should have. I enjoy your videos so much, thank you for sharing your knowledge!

I do have a question for you about this construction. How did you determine the measurements of the turtleneck piece? Had your past self already measured around the neckline to get that dimension for the neckline portion of the turtleneck? If you mentioned it I missed it, so I thought I would ask. I found this to be very informative, and I thank you for showing this process. I have a couple turtlenecks I really like to wear, but I would like to make a couple more in different colors, so this would be helpful for me. Thank you!
@CatherineSews
@CatherineSews Жыл бұрын
Yes, I definitely put a lot of trust in my past self for just accepting those measurements without question! It's the perfect fit if you're like me and can't tolerate a chokey neckline. It gives a bit of breathing room.

If you don't use a serger to attach the neck do you have to use a zig zag stitch?

Could you have the sewn sleeve hems before the side/sleeve seam?
@CatherineSews
@CatherineSews Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can, but then you end up with the end of the seam showing at the bottom of the sleeve, so my preference is to do the seam first, and then the hem.
