I figured out how to turn the Sonoff Basic RFR2 into a dry relay and installed it on my door. Works great. Now, I have the extra benefits of using a 433 MHz remote control to open my garage and retained the voice and app capability of the Basic.

Better still use one of the cheap 7-32v AC or DC smart relays (or now a Sonoff SV) and power it totally from the garage door controllers 24vdc. then use the voltage free relay contacts set in inching mode and mount the whole thing in the garage door motor unit. This way you eliminate having to play around with dangerous 110v.

Firstly im going to start off by saying i am a big fan of your channel, you have enabled me to set up a load of excellent things on my smartthings. I am sure this video is going to be very popular. I understand you saying its not the most practical solution and its budget friendly but that seems a lot of tinkerage (and in the wrong inexperienced hands, lethal) when the inching board is available for near enough the same price. Flashes easily, doesn't require such a drastic alteration and can be powered by 5v instead of mains.

I used a 4 relay wifi controlled with momentary board for the door opener buttons. I paid around $20 for it but it handles both my garage doors. Runs on 5-13 volts D.C. The momentary is perfect for garage doors.

Nice video - I built one of these about a year ago for Home Assistant and just switched to SmartThings last week. I also upgraded my garage door to one with WiFI so no need for this "hack" but I did love it and its always fun to build your own toys. So much you can do with something like this. A word of caution, when I had my Sonoff hooked up to my garage door, I had a handful of hiccups where it would automatically open the garage door without me doing it. I am also pretty sure that power surges would open the door (turn your garage breaker off and then on to test). Might want to test it. I had set up a rule that if my door was open for 15 min that it automatically closed as a precaution.

I had this issues with Sonoff devices at one point. Turned out it was MQTT retained messages that was causing this. Essentially, if you have retain ON, and if you lose Wifi momentarily, when the device re-connects, the MQTT server will send the "retained" state to the device, which may be ON. There are videos out there to help with configuring and clearing the MQTT retained message.

2 second timer fix....Go into your browser on computer or cell phone. Make sure you are connected to same network as sonoff device. Put in the sonoff IP address in your browser click on adv. settings tab go down to auto off change time to 2 seconds hit submit then reboot. ( ip address can be found to the left under the config button on the sonoff app controller)

Interesting device for the price. I set mine up quite some time ago using a zwave relay. On my garage door if you hold the button in for 5 or more seconds it locks out the remote controls so that the door can’t be opened by someone using a scrambler or a remote control. We use a virtual switch for this timing to lock out the garage doors when we are all home or when the house is in vacation mode.

There's something inconsistent about which end you pulled the neutral wired from. In the beginning of the video, it was de-soldered from the output side, but near the end, it looks like it was de-soldered from the input side.

When you cut that trace guys, please perform a continuity test from the fuse on the board to the leg on the relay which the trace use to go to or if you have already soldered the blue wire to that leg just test from output to on board fuse. If it bells out its not cut right.

Taylor, I would like to use Sonoff as configured in this video as a dry contact (or even without the modification) as a smart button. I would like to use the state of the Sonoff (ON or OFF) which could be used to control other Sonoffs. I would use it my woodworking shop to automatically turn on or off my dust collection system whenever a woodworking machine is turned on. As an example, A sonoff would be wired to the line side of my table saw contactor (or any other machine). When the table saw is turn on, the Sonoff switch then turn ON (may need an auxiliary contact from table saw contactor wired to Sonoff pushbutton) which would then control another remote Sonoff to turn ON my dust collector (via a contactor). When the table saw is turned off, then my dust collector would also turn off. Is it possible to configure the Sonoff as a smart button?

Great video. Simple question though. Why would you put it there (it looks really hacky) vs. just mount it by the garage door opener itself since you have the power there and you still have the wires that run from the button to the door opener? It seems like it would look better, have less chance of someone accidentally pulling the wires out, etc.

Great idea, but wouldn't it be much more simple to wire the 120v output to a contactor? Use a contactor with a 120v coils and energizing the coils would magnetically close the circuit for the garage door button... this way you don't have to modify the sonoff (or it would work with any other smart switch for that matter).

This is what I did. Sonoff, cheap ac to 12v power, to 12v relay. or even cheaper ac to 5v, and 5v relay.

Ok, great video. Just found you and subscribed but after my attempt at this mod after watching the mod on an older version sonoff. My attempt FAILED! Here is why. After studying the new version with the wires, I did the same as you. My problem was that after I cut the trace with a Dremel there were tiny wires looking things tying the top of board trace to bottom. I couldn’t isolate the mains from the relay. Any ideas?

Not sure what's wrong with my config. I followed along to the letter and after turning on the garage door opener (there are indicators on the back of the opener) I can see them blinking but the door won't open or close using the sonoff. Still works like a charm with the original opener and remotes. Suggestions?

If you touch the wires together by hand does it control the door that way? I've been informed that some newer openers don't work by simply shorting out the bell wires. There may be a code that is sent to the opener when the button is pushed. If it doesn't open, then there must be a problem with the sonoff. Is the relay switching? Can you hear it? And do you see the green LED light?

@@TaylorTech I can hear the relay switching. Also tested it using a multimeter prior to connecting to be sure it was closing the circuit like it should. I'll have to test touching the wires together by hand when I get home later tonight. The flashing looks good otherwise. All my configs to it have been retained across reboots. I chose to flash it using the espeasy python tool on a raspberry pi since I do not own a ftdi board to program the devices with. I've flashed many other ESP8266 devices with the same tool and they all work like a charm. But I'll test connecting the wires by hand to the sonoff to be sure if that could be the problem... one last note, I used speaker wires to connect the sonoff to the garage door opener.

@@TaylorTech so the problem was that it is a newer garage door opener. Liftmaster MyQ which is already wifi enabled. Luckily, I'm not out a sonoff because my employer has a much older garage door opener that he can use it with. In exchange, he's providing me with another sonoff to take its place. Thanks for the video just the same. It has been a great learning experience for me.

Off topic but I noticed you had smart life rgbw lights connected directly through smart things. Is this the ZigBee interfaced models or wifi? If it is the wifi models what device handler are you using? I have some wifi connected down lights from zemismart, they use the smart life app. I would like to utilise them directly with smart things if possible. Thanks. And also another great video.. A suggestion of your looking at updating your wifi... I have over 120 wifi devices (thanks to home automation) and my current Netgear r7000 router can not handle the load. The 2.4ghz band is fully maxed and the 5ghz band is almost fully saturated. So I have ubiquiti AC Pro X2 coming tomorrow. These are rated at up to 200 connections each with fairly good speeds to boot. These are commercial and prosumer marketed. They also coming in different models pending the scenario. Ubiquiti ftw .

As far as wifi, I have the same exact router as you, the r7000. It is struggling big time and that ubiquiti has been on my radar. The lag is likely because your Smartthings device is cloud-based and not local. Login to your Smartthings account in a web browser and go to the "My Devices'" tab. You'll see the "Execution Location" column is either "Local" or "Cloud". Cloud devices have to do a round-trip over the internet to operate. In fact, if your internet is not working, your devices will also stop working; so that's not great for home automation to rely on your internet connection. This mode of operation drives me nuts as there is a lag for any button push or chime. That's also why I went away from my old Smartthings hub and started using Home Assistant instead. Almost all interaction with Home Assistant is local.

You could but by using contact sensors you can automate them. For example if a garage door is open at sunset you can have it automatically close, using any number of routines or web core.

I had to watch further and you explained it better at the end, and I just had to switch where the wire was going to.
