Making headway on my gauntlet, and the pdf templates and directions are quite awesome. On the vid, it shows you closing the gauntlet along to forearm on the side without the hinges...What are you using to close that end? It looks like a little foam is there as well. Any help is appreciated.
@DavidGuyton11 жыл бұрын
Correct. I used epoxy to glue foam onto one side of the Vambrace (there is also some foam padding in there too). This is enough to keep in closed, but if you intend to wear it as a costume or something, you will need to figure out a way to add some sort of fastener or clasp
@DEATH11118310 жыл бұрын
Frostytots helpful hint on how to close the bracer more securely than wedging it closed with foam. take some craft magnets and split them small enough to line the edge of the bracer to help seal it shut, pending on the polarity strength, it should make a nice tight seal. hell if you shop around you might find some 50lb pull magnets smaller than your finger nail

David Guyton You are an amazing teacher! I thank you for sharing your knowledge of armor building with us. I've always wanted to test my skills with many crafts. I will try this sometime. An interesting way to see life and what we build. Is that it's all done drawn out 1st. So I am more of a concept artist than a builder. So I think I am at a point where I will try the building crafting side of things, over the conceptual designing. As conceptual designers need workers. I would rather be the worker but at the same time. We don't live in "year 1" so we have to accept we live in different currency and we all have to do our jobs to travel the world. So I guess the difference in needing workers over being the worker. Is to inspire and be a good leader. However I still want to learn this so thanks very much. Hopefully you are seeing my point of view here. I've always wondered who I would be if I lived when everything was natural from nature. Over electronic and not so much beautiful as natural elements. Electronics are never what life is about. Anyways. Thanks again!
@DavidGuyton9 жыл бұрын
Well I can guarantee that when you make the jump from concept artist to craftsman, you will do just fine. If you use my simple methods, it will be easy enough (even if it takes a long time). Trust me, if I can do this stuff, so can you. Get yourself some sheet metal and give it a try!
@braidenjose87209 жыл бұрын
David Guyton That is awesome! I love your work and am grateful for all the teachers who show the craft that is true to nature. Wires and lights. That's all progress but none of it is needed when we travel. Like engineers you know. They work with technology but their job requires them to stay where they are at. A craftsman can travel the world and make anything anywhere. Of course with the help of others we meet in life. Great work here. I live with engineers and have always loved nature, over electronics. While also accepting our time we live in. Electronics are made with robotics. I prefer making things using our bodies and endurance. Plus don't you agree it's a lot more entertaining to watch someone craft something real, than on the computer? :) Workshops are a great route to take for learning too. Sometimes they are far better than even going to college.
@braidenjose87209 жыл бұрын
David Guyton I was wondering David Guyton. What do we do if we want to make a pauldron with leather overlapping it? So if I want to lay leather over the top of the steel or brass pauldron. What do I use to get it attached in position on top of the steel or brass? Is it a glue or bolting technique? I have seen some armors where they put a steel or brass strip on the sides of the leather and they bolt it down or nail it.
@DavidGuyton9 жыл бұрын
I have never covered metal with leather so I don't know. I imagine you would need some kind of contact adhesive like the kind they use for vinyl tops for cars

starting watching your tutorial video's just over a year ago, was always into building models before that. But now thanks to you I have over 10 sets of gauntlets and greaves, some based off of your templates and others (through trial and error) of my own design. it was difficult to start I must admit seeing as I never really had many tools lying around but now my garage has been turned into a man-cave, with enough tools to make most mechanics jealous and I can't get enough of building in my spare time. recently started to learn to build chest plates and shoulder guards (which are a whole other ball game) but would never have been possible without your tutorials :) thank you so much

Very cool, and thank you. I'm a backyard blacksmith and have just recently started on armor... mostly because sheet metal is so expensive. I cranked out a couple of these gauntlets out of 18ga and 16ga steel (I downsized the large "cap" on the upper forearm, and had to oversize the finger pieces a bit to make up for the thickness of the bend for the gauge I used). I heated it and went over it with a brass brush to give it a dark color with a brass sheen, and highlighted the edges with tarnished copper. Rivets are dark brass (used gun bluing chems). I wanted an ancient look. They look amazing. Currently working on greaves and a cuirass to go with (not Iron-Man, but still sort of blocky/straight angles - I like to look). Thank you again for sharing the vid, and for the good template.

Just started making this gauntlet, using 16 gauge mild steel that's going to be coated and painted, when beginning I forgot to take into account the effect the thickness of the steel would have on my original measurements, thankfully I picked up on that before I'd done too many parts. never thought it would be so hard to bend lol because of that I had to make a framework for the vambrace so that I could bend it just right, albeit this makes it far heavier but with the added bonus of being much sturdier
Thank you all for making these armoring videos so popular! I am very grateful

and I am a carpenter by trade. this might be a neat little hobby to try to get into. I do have most of the tools you show in your tools used. only one it looks like I don't have would be the body hammer and whatever a piece of you used. might have to give this a try. I love a good challenge

if you're handy...even in the slightest...I promise you that you can do this. It's a lot easier than people think

I hope so. I said there's some of the tools are seen in the videos I do already have but the hammer and anvil is needed. One thing in the video I thought was very interesting what is your use of roofing nails as rivets. The funny thing is I've done that before.

I plan to build two, with my own variations, then use an enamel coating for slight heat resistance and low shine.

I'm pretty sure someone has maybe already suggested this, but you should make an Infinity Gauntlet.
