I've been producing for years at a fairly average level - transcending amateur into professional has always been a dream of mine, and because of your videos I believe I'm getting closer. I cannot thank you enough, ELPHNT. Your videos are criminally underwatched, and very few (if any) compare to your quality of content. I'm no poet, so I do not know how express gratitude eloquently, but know in time I'm going to spend so much damn money on your website. I encourage others who have been inspired by ELPHNT to do the same, and support this incredible producer. Love from Australia.

That's such a great tool ! I used to put an Utility after an effect to do gain compensation manually and group it with the device to switch on/off to see how it really affect the sound. This gonna save me a lot of time and struggle ! Let's hope in the future Ableton will add a Gain Compensation switch in all of their tool. Thank you so much for sharing, great work as usual !

Finally somebody showed this issue in an easy way to understand for the novices. I knew about the importance of matching the loudness of your effects, but many people still not realizing how biased they are being at applying effects and not knowing exactly what they are doing, most of the time for worse due to the diminished dynamic range.

love this! but if you'd like more control, I think it's worth mentioning the GOAT of overlooked devices, Utility. Using your eyes on the meter, you can set the amount of gain after an effect using utility. This is also helpful for spatial/stereo effects as utility has a built in m/s control. of course, there's pro's and con's to anything, and the biggest pro of the Gain Compensation device is it allows you the producer to focus on the effect and not the level, leaving you to focus on the most important part, the feeling. Seriously, big thank you to LAEX and you, elphnt, for your incredible contributions to the live community.
@ELPHNT3 жыл бұрын
+1 for Utility. Super useful tool. I guess the benefit of the Max device is it does it automatically for you, almost like an invisible hand on the volume control so you can focus on what you're adjusting. If you've got a MIDI controller where you can be adjusting the effect with one hand and the volume on a Utility with the other then for sure, Utility is perfect 👌

Use LUFS meter before/after processing each channel. Always A-B test what you did. LUFS is better because it follows an equal loudness curve, so follows how you perceive sound rather than simply peak/RMS metering.

This is really another level. omg wow. no handwaving, no jargon. love love love
@bbxdesign4 жыл бұрын
It might not mean much but what I really like is how, when A/B testing (no compression vs compression for example), you stop speaking and play both loops twice, instead of once. This makes a lot of difference to me because you can hear the transition from A to B but also from B to A. And hearing it twice allows me to focus on hearing the difference. So many KZbin videos get this wrong and speak during the A/B testing phase. Your way of doing it is perfect and you did it all through the video.

I just want to thank you for this eye opener. I’ve been making music since the Amiga days and things only got more difficult around 10 years ago when every tutorial surfaced showing people slap compressors all over everything. For the last 8 or so years i have never been happy with my mixes either because of over eqing to compensate a bad room or doing dumb compression or tube saturation to make everything overly loud. I have a treated room now, hd600 headphones and took all the compressors off, making better choices of drum samples & synth patches instead. My main focus is tone and composition now, not volume!
@skatechatham4 жыл бұрын
I also removed all spectrum analyzers from my projects too and i just mix with my ears and reference tracks now
