Hey, thank you so much for this, my machine has been sitting in a box for about a year, I bought it with the intent of making stickers but I couldn't find a video that was able to simplify things for me, which you have done so gracefully. Thank you again, you have given me the confidence to create something and now my brother machine can stop giving me that look.

Just got my DX85 from Amazon yesterday and the rolling case today. Amazons' description said dimensions were 9.1 x 9.1 x 9.1 inches. Shocked to dig deeper and find how huge the footprint PLUS clearance really is. I had to rearrange office supplies and table supplies to fit that beast. In past 2 days I've watched scores of videos on making stickers and difference of mats. The amazon description does not include the Brother chart with mat info. Many videos said don't use the standard mat with paper. But yours was the only tutorial that specifically said to use the 'standard' mat with sticker paper. Thank you for this stellar tutorial. Also, your responses to comments were outstanding. I read every single comment and response. I'm tech savvy (35 years in IT security) so I'm hoping my DX85 will be as easy for me to operate as a toaster! :-) tfs!

Thanks for the kind words. I agree the footprint these machines take up is pretty large especially when using the 12" x 24" mat. As a word of caution that I didn't mention in the video, before using the standard mat with your sticker paper, make sure it's not too sticky. The stick seems to vary, at least for me, when I get a new mat. Sometimes it's just right. Sometimes it's really sticky so check before putting the sticker paper down. It should be fine but if it's too sticky you can always stick it to a cotton t-shirt to pull some of the sticky off. Have fun with your new DX85!

The scan part of the ScanNCut definitely makes things much easier. The software program, Canvas Workspace, however, is not the easiest but truthfully, none of the various software programs (ScanNCut, Silhouette, Cricut) are super easy. So if you like the simplicity of just scanning and cutting, this should be a great machine for you.

Your video has been a lifesaver. I need help with my scan n cut dx85. When I scan my stickers the cut lines are not smooth. I have tried everything and it still is jagged. Also at times it will not see what I want to cut and other times it does. Does light affect the quality of the scan?
@BlackSheep303Crafts

Light can impact the scan. I'm not very familiar with the SDX 85 but on the 125 you can click the wrench icon to get into the scan settings and change it from b&w to color and vice versa. That can help when scanning. So if you have that option, I'd give that a try.

Hi, cool vid. Couple of questions. I like to create a black line border on my stickers using the cricut machine.. about .015 gives me the black outline to make them stand out.. and then .25 for the offset. Is the scan and cut able to give you the outline, and then have you had any issues with calibration since you have owned the machine. Many cricut crafters like my self are fed up with the inconsistency of print and cut with Cricut
@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, you can't add a black border with the ScanNCut machine itself after you scan something in. You would be able to do it in Canvas Workspace but if you're in the US, there isn't a way to print directly from the program so that doesn't really help (there is a print then cut add-on for other parts of the world - no idea why you can't get it in the US). I've been lucky and haven't had any issues with calibration on any of my machines but with that said, the cuts are never 100% perfect. Even scanning images directly into the ScanNCut, you can't get it to perfectly cut right on the edge of the images which is why I always add a border. It's always pretty good but never 100% correct. I'm guessing it's just a limitation of these machines designed for crafters as opposed to professional printers, but hard to know for sure.

Good video! Does the brother SW also support to create and print the sticker page including the cut information ... as Silhouette Studio does?
@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts 3 жыл бұрын
Funny you should ask...Not too long ago Brother launched a 'Print to Cut Activation Card' that adds the same print to cut features to Canvas Workspace that Silhouette Studio already has in its program. I haven't been able to find the card to purchase in the US so it may just be released in Europe and Australia right now. It's about 25 pounds in the UK to buy it. Not great to have to pay for a function that most machines have built-in to their software already but from the videos I've watched, it looks like it works really well. If it becomes available in the US, I will get it and do a video on it. If you're not in the US, you might do a search for it to see if you can get it.

When that happens to me I usually switch the recognition mode on the machine to the other setting (the DX has two options), like from color to grays or vice versa and then scan the mat again. You can find that setting in the Scan menu by hitting the wrench icon. Sometimes I have to move things around on the mat to get a good scan too. Hey, thanks for this tutorial, it's really helpful for someone considering buying a scanncut. I currently have a cricut but feel it's wasteful and after their recent issues don't want to support them with buying mats, blades etc anymore. So I'm looking at buying either the cameo or scan and cut. I have a couple questions if you don't mind? Firstly, I only use my machine to make sticker sheets and die cut stickers, really not much else. Secondly, my biggesty frustrations with the cricut are the waste of paper on the edges and the inaccuracy/difficult calibrating it to cut perfectly. So which out of the cameo vs scan n cut do you think I would be better suited to? Also, with the scanncut which I'm currently leaning toward, I'm guessing you have to rescan each time you want to cut something? So if I was making like 20 of the same sticker sheet, I would have to scan and go through those settings changes each time? or is there some sort of 'repeat' function? Thank you so much!
@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! With both the Cameo and the ScanNCut you will have to go through some cutting experiments to make sure it is cutting properly, but with the autoblades on both machines it shouldn't be too may times having to make changes and once you know the settings for each material, you should be good to go until the blade gets too dull. I do think the Cameo adjusts slightly faster and easier than the ScanNCut. Depending on the size of your sticker sheets, you may or may not have some extra waste. Both the Cameo and ScanNCut have small borders around each edge where you can't cut but I do think it's smaller than the Cricut border. If you are doing 8.5" x 11" sheets, I'd just stick them in the middle of the mat and you will have very, very little waste. Print then Cut limits don't exist like they do on Cricut for the ScanNCut because you are just scanning things in so that's a consideration. The Silhouette Cameo print then cut registration marks will eat. up about .75" on each side of the mat (1.5" off height and width). You can scan a sheet of stickers into the ScanNCut once and save it to the machine so you can cut that same scan multiple times. You'll have to make sure that you put the sticker sheet in exactly the same spot on the mat every time and that there aren't any variations in the printing or you may get some odd cuts. Like if the image is printed a bit to the left of the one that was scanned in, you will have a smaller border on that side or more of that part of the image cut off for die cut stickers. I hope that makes sense. I think both machines are great. The ScanNCut software is definitely much more limited than the Silhouette but if you are doing all of your designing in another program, then it won't matter (or use Silhouette Studio Business Edition to design and save the SVGs to use with the Brother). I have had a lot of problems cutting vinyl with the standard Autoblade and the ScanNCut, so if that's something you use it for (vinyl decals?), you will need to invest in the Vinyl Autoblade (around $60). The Cameo has cut almost everything really well pretty much right off with a few minor adjustments. Let me know if you have other questions or if I didn't answer something clearly enough or thoroughly enough for you. I get where you're coming from with Cricut...😀

@@BlackSheep303Crafts Hi, Thank you so much for the in depth response, I truly appreciate it because I'm going round and round trying to decide between these two machines and don't want to get it wrong again after not getting it right with the cricut. I didn't even realise the cameo had the autoblade feature too, that's good to know. Does the cameo have a test cut function similar to the brother scan n cut? I tend to make my sticker sheets 2 to a page, and always go to the full limit that cricut allows (and feel annoyed that it can't do more) so to print them slightly bigger would be great. Interesting to know about the vinyl issues. How is the ScanNCut with things like holo overlay? I tend to use adhesive holo film/overlay on of some of my die cut stickers to add a sparkly effect, but given it works via scanning things, I'm thinking it might have an issue reading the lines? The cricuts work around is that I tape the holo exactly inside of the border, but for scanncut that wouldn't really be a solution. I don't really use vinyl much, my stickers are just my art printed onto matte or glossy sticker paper most of the time. I would be doing all my my designing in another program for sure but I'm also quite technically minded so don't see the learning curve with the cameo as an issue. It's easier for me to get a hold of the cameo here in the UK, but I think because of the potential for more accuracy as well as the ability to use more of the page, the ScanNCut is more appealing to me. I wish I could test out cutting some die cut stickers, a stickersheet with kiss cut stickers and a die cut edge and some holo overlay stickers with both to see which one works better somehow. Well, thanks for your help, I guess I need to do some more research to be confident about which way to go!
@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts 3 жыл бұрын
@@merakisprinkle8386 I haven't used any holo overlay so I don't know if that would cause a problem. If it's more like paper than vinyl, I think the ScanNCut should do fine with it. Do you have any scrapbook/craft stores near you that may have the machines and would let you try them out? There used to be a local store here that would let customers do that. Just a thought. Good luck!!

@@BlackSheep303Crafts Ahh no, its actually going to be a case of having to find a way to important it for the scan n cut if I decide on that sadly. The holo is like laminate that you stick over the top, but it has like a holo sparkly effect which reflects light so I'm guessing the scan n cut might be problematic for that. I will probably end up going with the cameo tbh. I just need to do a bit more research. Thanks so much again for your help!

@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts 2 жыл бұрын
Well. the problem is that the machine will cut slightly differently every time so there's no way to ensure completely perfect alignment on a second sheet for a saved scan. That said, you could experiment and line up the first sheet very precisely in a specific spot on the mat (like the lower left corner or something - align two edges at least), scan it, cut the stickers and then save the project. Then you can try to very precisely line up the second sheet in the exact same spot on the mat and fingers crossed, the machine will cut close enough to save you having to scan it every time. There's no guarantee it will work and bare minimum, it's not going to be perfect - best case it will be 'close enough'. If it were me, I'd at least try it and see how it goes. Worst case, you mess up one sheet of stickers (assuming you have extras). If you don't have an extra sheet or two to potentially sacrifice, I'd just scan them every time so you don't risk it. My fingers are crossed for you. I hope the mat alignment trick works! I'd love to hear how it goes if you try it.

Hi Ted! I have had problems getting the regular Autoblade to cut any kind of vinyl really well, including printable vinyl. The results were always inconsistent and pretty frustrating even after making adjustments to the blade settings. I had to purchase the Vinyl Autoblade (around $60) to finally get good and consistent results cutting vinyl so you may have to do that too for vinyl stickers. I haven't actually cut laminated vinyl with either blade and it's possible that may offer better results with just the regular Autoblade since the laminate will make the vinyl stiffer and may be easier to cut as a result. Laminated paper cuts pretty easily. I would love to hear from you how it goes if you try it. I hope my feedback helps!

Instead of getting self-laminating sheets you might want to use Xyron's cold press machines. They are human powered via crank mechanism, they use a variety of easy to "hot swap" cartridges that offer pH neutral and acid-free archival protection of your printed works. The capacities of these cartridges may differ based on how they're branded for other companies, but their compatibility is solid regardless of the name on the machine or cartridge. Just make sure the width of their cartridge matches the slot/feed roll width of your Xyron machine. My 900 series works with all 9 inch wide cartridges from Xyron, Scotch, 3M, etc. Just as long as it is a 9 inch wide cartridge I can use it. So with that in mind you can get upwards of 60 feet of material depending on the branded badge. These are not meant to be reusable once the material is all used up. There are double side laminates, laminate/adhesives (repositionable and permanent glues), repositionable and permanent adhesives, laminate/magnet (tops at about 10 feet of material).

But, all you need to do is turn off the Half Cut setting (if you've got a DX machine) and then possibly increase the pressure (the regular pressure, not the half cut pressure). Hi Ada, there are usually links to the SVGs I use in the video description. My favorite sites to get designs are creativefabrica.com, designbundles.net and fontbundles.net. To print on fabric you’d need to use a specialty material like printable heat transfer paper that you could then heat set on to another fabric. Great question! The major difference will be that the older CM models like the 2, don't have the Half Cut setting. So, you may need to test the cut pressure setting on your machine so it won't cut through the backing sheet if you want to have a sheet of stickers still on the backing sheet. Start with a low number and then go up by one until it cuts through just the top and not the backing sheet. Then you'll know the setting to use for stickers, as long as you always use the same sticker paper every time. If it doesn't matter to you if it cuts the whole sticker out, backing sheet included, then it will be easier. I hope that helps!

But you can upload images to Canvas Workspace and trace them in the program to use them with the machine. You wouldn’t be able to make them into stickers that way but you could turn them into shaped cut files that you could cut from sticker paper. I hope that makes sense.

Can you put laminate paper on the stickers before the cut?

Sure. Since it will make the stickers thicker (obviously - lol) I'd double check the cut to make sure it goes all the way through before unloading the mat, but you can absolutely add laminate before the cut.

I am not a printer expert by any means. I use a Canon Pixma MG7720. It's pretty old so I doubt it's available anymore but the Canon Pixma line is pretty great and not too pricey. I always look for a good photo printer in order to get good prints of graphics as well. I hope that helps!

@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts 3 жыл бұрын
Well, it will require some trial and error and patience. If you have an older model machine and have to work with the manual ratchet blade then it will take testing the settings with the material you want to cut possibly many times until you get it right. Even the DX with half cut and autoblade can require that too but if you really want to make stickers, it is totally worth it. That's the frustration but also the joy of these cutting machines. 😉

@@wendyvoye3110 I own all of the major cutting machines (for my channel) - Cricut Maker, Cricut Joy, Silhouette Cameo 4 and ScanNCut DX - and there are different reasons to get each depending on what you want to make. But overall the Silhouette machines are very versatile and their software is hands-down the best but also has a steep-ish learning curve (as do all of them really it's just that Silhouette's does more). The ScanNCut is amazing if you want to primarily scan images to cut like stickers or stamped images, etc. Don't know if that helps but I have lots of opinions on these things. I could go on for hours. Lol! Good luck.

@@BlackSheep303Crafts I appreciate your help so much! It's hard to get an unbiased opinion. Honestly I'm not sure how I'm going to use it yet. I mostly want to make planner stickers with a slant towards some astrology themed ones and possible some transfers for mugs and tumblers. Any advice would be great. I'm old..lol.. So not great with technology so I'm not sure how well I can figure out the software but I'm willing to try. I really don't want to be locked into a monthly subscription (cricut). I'd like to keep it budget friendly especially until I know people are going to be interested. I'm getting an HP envy printer for free but am willing to invest in a different one if I need. Also as of now I only have a phone but it looks like I may need a laptop or tablet for better access. Do you use a computer or phone?
@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts 3 жыл бұрын
@@wendyvoye3110 I use a computer. You could easily film videos with a phone but I think it would be tough to design stickers or anything really on such a small screen. I couldn't do it. My ScanNCut DX doesn't cut vinyl that well (for transfers). There will be a lot of trial and error that eats up a ton of time and material in my experience. I had to shell out an extra $60 to get the vinyl autoblade to be able to get a consistent result with vinyl and sublimation sheets. The Silhouette Cameo and Cricut machines on the other hand had no problem cutting vinyl perfectly from the start. It's probably safe to assume the Curio would be the same. The Silhouette Studio software is also the best cutting machine software for designing but you'd need to get the Business Edition to be able to export designs as SVGs (Swing Design offers a discount). You could also use Inkscape which is a free vector design program that is a bit glitchy but powerful and does everything Silhouette Studio does. That's what I use. Both have steep-ish learning curves but there are lots of tutorials available on KZbin for both. I would start with the free printer and if the print quality isn't good enough for your stickers, then move to something else. Free is always good in the beginning. I hope that helps!

@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts Жыл бұрын
I need a little more info - are the spaces between the letters separate words or print letters, not cursive? If so, the only way you can do a direct cut with something like that is if you draw a connected border all the way around the image you're trying to cut out. You can do it with a pencil so you can erase it afterwards. Things you scan into the machine for an offset have to be connected all the way around for it to do a proper offset. Otherwise it sees each separate letter or word as needing its own offset. There are work arounds for this in Canvas Workspace but that's a more complicated task than doing a Direct Cut. Or, am I misunderstanding what's happening?
@roamwithdory
@roamwithdory Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I tried connecting the letters with a pencil. for others, I even just drew a circle around the texts but it still cuts through the middle, into each letters. I am wondering if I should take the .png file of the texts and take it to Procreate app and draw a white sticker border around it so that the white border will be part of the sticker design. I saw artists who sell stickers do this on their designs. I wonder if ScannCut would just ignore it and cut right through anyway, @@BlackSheep303Crafts

Thanks! I also dried drawing the lines to close gaps between letters. The machine cut along those closed gaps nicely but still also cut the details in the center of the image. I've also added the .04 border.@@BlackSheep303Crafts

You can try the Procreate idea if you're more comfortable working in that software. Or, you can take the design in to Brother Canvas Workspace and add an offset there. You have the option in the program to choose whether or not you want the offset to be just on the outside or both the outside and inside parts of the design. In Canvas Workspace, you select the item and then go to Edit>Create Offset and the Offset box will appear. You can change the amount (like to .40), adjust the corners and then make sure the check box near the bottom that says "Create an offset line only around the outer edge" is checked. The box will show you a preview of how it will cut so you can see it it's correct or not beforehand. Then you'll need to export the design to the machine but hopefully that will fix the problem. You can also email me at elena@blacksheep303.com with the image so I can see what you're trying to do. It's a little difficult to help without knowing exactly what you're trying to cut. I hope that helps!

@BlackSheep303Crafts 3 жыл бұрын
My major question would be how much do you use the scanner (being able to scan the actual mat) on the ScanNCut? I have a ScanNCut SDX 125 and it is very quiet and for the most part, the Auto Blade (no more blade adjustments) on it works well (not so great with vinyl but the Vinyl Auto Blade is fabulous for that but more $$). If you don't need the scanning ability, I do think the Silhouette Cameo 4 is a better deal. You can usually get it for less than a ScanNCut and the software program is much, much better than Canvas WorkSpace but with a steeper learning curve. The Silhouette is kind of noisy though. I hope that helps. Let me know if I can answer any specific questions you have about the machines since I own both a ScanNCut and a Cameo 4.

I don't know if the DesignNCut can print then cut but in the US, that is not available on the ScanNCut. There is an add-on sold outside of the US that will allow you to print then cut with the ScanNCut so it's possible there is something similar available with the DesignNCut. I'm also not sure why that add-on isn't easily available in the the US...has always seemed odd to me. You might ask Julie Fei-Fan Blazer because she is an actual product rep for Brother ScanNCut and may know that answer for sure.

Can I use my scanncut file on my cricut
@BlackSheep303Crafts
@BlackSheep303Crafts 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Molly! If you're talking about a file you saved in Canvas Workspace for your ScanNCut with the .cwprj file extension (the proprietary file type for ScanNCut), then no, you can't use that with a Cricut. If it is an .SVG file that you opened in Canvas Worspace but still have as a separate .SVG file, you would be able to. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to save a .CWPRJ file as an .SVG from Canvas Workspace. There are work arounds, like separating the layers in Canvas Workspace, taking a screen shot and then you can try to upload that to Cricut Design Space or if it's too low resolution, you could open it in a program like Inkscape, trace it and then save it as an SVG. That's a fair amount of work and a bit of an advanced thing to try but it technically can be done. Hope that helps!

Instead of choosing the offset symbol on the machine's screen after scanning the mat, choose the double square button to the right of it. Arrow down until you see the shape you want to use (there are a few different squares) and select it. That will add the square around the images. It will be right next to the outer edges of the images but you can change that in the next step. Click OK. Then click on the offset button and press + or - to increase and decrease the size of the squares you added. Once you're good with the size of the squares, click OK and then cut as normal. I hope that helps!
