Speaking on mending, I took mine out to the back deck two days ago. I replaced the elastic in 4 skirts ( I've lost 75lbs in the last year) and cut and pinned the fabric for 2 new skirts, that I'll be sewing later today.

Wow, 75lbs - That's Amazing💥.. How did the skirts turn out?

I just wanted to say that I love these cozy videos. It's like having a sit down with a good neighbor - very warm and chummy! Looking forward to spring here as well so I can have all my windows open for the fresh air. :)

More gorgeous old books. Your Needlecraft book would be 1937. The letters and numbers you read out from the copyright page are how they used to date books - the numbers refer to the month and year of publication, so 837 would be August 1937. What a fab find! Good luck with the cottage - how exciting!

I remember on the history channel there was a show about WW2 and what they did about clothes. Something about floor sacks or such were printed with patterns to encourage women to reuse them for clothing.

You remind me of the classic Marilyn Monroe potato sack dress.....
@pinecone50 Жыл бұрын
Making clothing from flour sacks that were printed with patterns was very popular during the Depression in the US. I don't know how essential it was during the war as the US as more people had jobs and could afford to buy fabric and clothing rationing was not as severe as in the UK. I have never heard of flour sacks being used in the UK but I'd love to know if that is true or not.

Just been talking to my daughter in America , she’s on holiday, 8 hour time difference. Today i made bubble and squeak, a sweet potato and bean stew, an apple crumble, added syrup after seeing your tart one. Baked a loaf in the bread maker.
@rationbookrebecca Жыл бұрын
Oooh, hope she's enjoying herself over there... The customers were telling me about their holidays this weekend.. Memories from travels are great! Yum - how did the crumble turn out? Was the addition of syrup worth it?
@varinafulcher5898 Жыл бұрын
Going back to the apple crumble with golden syrup, it gives it a sort of toffee taste, I use half oats half flour too. Sending positive thoughts for your cottage.x

What a delightful visit this. New subscriber here from New England. We still have snow, but a whole colony of snowdrops have emerged under an arborvitae. Beautiful sun this morning, but cloudy again now and probable snow this evening. Looking forward to catching up with your past videos, and holding my breath with you in anticipation over the little cottage. Positive thoughts coming your way. Susan

So I take it that it is below normal temps in the UK? Forget snow in Canada. If you want to see people who won't see green for a long time check out California. Granted places like Mammoth Lakes get lots of snow in the winter but this year it is unreal. The snow extended all the way down almost to the Mexican border at one time. If you are interested check out Mammoth Mountain Life, Life in the Eastern Sierra etc. It will make you feel warm.

Do you have a darning mushroom for sock repairs? Also, would it help if you bought a silk dressing gown from an op shop, then knitted panels to stitch to the silk, and to the knitted panels abutting, so it is lined? If I had a wool dressing gown, I would itch myself to death.

This vlog was a little ray of sunshine for me this morning as I have been paying far too much attention to what's happening with Mr P & Mr Z in Europe as well as all the news from across the pond....driving myself bonkers. I think I need to take up knitting!....Good luck with the cottage ❤ 😊

Oh. What a pity we don't live near each other! I see old knitting books - or pamphlet thingies and mostly modern cooking books but sometimes old, - and they aren't my thing. I am chasing WW2 air force stuff and SOE stuff and pacific WW2 stuff and... well, I get sidetracked by everything - but I will never learn to knit. I am in Oz.

@@rationbookrebecca Are the 66 points for clothes/material/shoes only? I think a little tin of ham from America, was about 14 points - but as an individual, you had 5 points a week. So if you had a family, it would cost pretty well 3 people's points for the 1 tin for the week. I guess everything else would be off ration.

Hi rebecca...watching your vids a little randomly....did you ever sort a new dressing gown out? Just wondered how many points a woolen blanket is? Maybe you could use that as fabric and use your old dressing gown pieces as a pattern? Probably writing this nine months too late!!😂

Hi Sally, thanks for your thoughts.. I've made do without tbh. Woollen dressing gowns were 8 points and woollen cloth began at 3-9" for 1/2 coupon. I've also found a knitting pattern for a house coat - I dread to think how long that would take..

A friend recommended that if you wear through bed/house socks quickly then putting a sort-of leather "sole" onto them would make them a lot more robust... After wearing mine out quickly, I got myself into the habit of walking around the house in slippers..

Hi Rebecca, The Big Book of Needle Craft book was bought for me by my father when I was doing a fashion design back years ago, its a great book and I am sure you will use it a lot as I do. I too would say it is 1930's going by the styles in it. I have since seen it a couple of times in the sections of charity shops so must have been quite a popular book in its time. Good luck with the exciting move......
