Beautiful! When I use GF I only file/sand once everything is finished and I also put painters tape on my metal immediately from the manufacturers packaging to prevent any scratches because 2.5% gold layer on each side is VERY thin. I even use my disc cutter with the tape on. I have a hard time seeing when the gold is sanded off because the underlying base brass metal is gold colored too. Basia, I also use Protecta-Clear to seal the piece, especially the edges where the brass will show/oxidize. I hope all my mistakes help others not make them!

Hiya, it's good of you to share like this with us and help us in this way, learning from someone else's mistakes is cheap for us so let's just make sure we do learn and thank the original sufferer for their kindness in sharing. Protecta-Clear does sound like the best route to take. Good protection from scratches and oxidization too. Thank you and stay safe...Steve...

So you liked the Pepe disc cutter then Deb? I've not used that one but from Basia's video on it, and from what I've seen on other channels it does look like they took every engineering style comment to heart and produced a near-perfect tool. Thank you Pepe for listening to people like us and making a piece of equipment that does the job we want it to do, not some accountant at the manufacturers deciding what we can and can't have. Thank you Deb for giving praise where it is due. Doing this will encourage Pepe and others to make tools that help us make the designs we see in our heads. Stay safe...Steve...

One thing you could add is place some paper underneath the disc when you flip it over to hammer after stamping. It will protect the surface from any fine scratches from your block. We know how careful you need to be with GF! 😉. Great tutorial!

I thought this simple option, that doesn't require any soldering, might be interesting! These can be made with minimal tools too, as an alternative, so I'm glad you enjoyed it! ❤️ Would you like to try making something like this yourself if you could? Amazing work. Would the copper inside the gold filled disk show from the sides????
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
I haven't noticed it from the sides. I did, however, remove too much of the gold layer once before and noticed discoloration, so we have to be very careful about that!
@stephencoster95323 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingI know the pen does not use the same thickness of gold, but what you did, could you make good with a gold plater and not see the repair, or would you get discolouration? Thank you, Basia, Steve...

Its not just copper, its brass. It WILL look bad over time if you don't seal it. Protecta-Clear metal sealant is a great non-hazmat product.

Hello, great material and vidéo. Where do you buy your gold fill plain please ? Have à Nice Day !!!
@anabellesemprum-orfebre47233 жыл бұрын
Hello, after working with Gold filled sheets, do you recommend doing gold plating? I say this because the edges are exposed. Thank you .. (I'm learning English, I'm from Venezuela) Love your videos!!
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
I still need more experience to be able to answer this with certainty. I tried gold plating, and will be doing some more very soon. I think it's better, because you are in control what kind of metal you are plating - for example sterling silver. So the value can be better in that case. However, we have to keep in mind, that plating is always thinner than gold filled, and will wear off a bit faster. As you can see, the choice is based on few factors and depends on what you are looking for. If you're looking for purity, then plating on silver will be better than gold filled with copper and alloy inside. But if you'd like more lasting effect, gold filled might be a little better. But like I mentioned, I myself need more experience in that matter, to be able to answer better :) But I hope this helps a little! Thank you for watching!

Hiya Lady Stardust, what a great pair of items, the neckless took more time and needed more tools to make, but the ring looks more complex than the pendant. I would think it would be easy to gold plate the edge of the disc, but would it be very expensive? The kit, even the pen style isn't cheap if I remember. But if you intend to make these on commercial bass even large outlays can earn their cost back, and start making you a profit. I know you made a video on gold plating about 9 months ago. Was that the pen type? Stay safe, dear lady...Steve...
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve! Right? The ring is so interesting, yet all it takes is some wrapping and shaping, very simple :) As for the plating, I agree, if someone has the plating tools, then it could be done I believe, but without it it's a bit more tricky. The video I made was on the Pepetools pen plating station, I will be using it very soon for several projects and I will make an updated video too. Thank you so much for watching, as always, stay safe xx
@Lucy4n893 жыл бұрын
I'd also love to hear your thoughts on that pen plating tool, will you be making more videos about it? I think there was this case of using another solution before applying gold to make it look brighter?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
You're so right! I will check what it was and will try using it next time. I will do more plating now, as I want to start using solid gold bezels as well, which paired with plating on some areas will look amazing. Also, I have several projects that involve plating, but didn't have the chance to try it out yet! 🤦♀️ So I can't wait to test these out and show you 🥰

I though punching, sanding and drilling leaves the base metal exposed to oxidation. Good to know, thanks a lot 💖 Who is your gold fill supplier?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing3 жыл бұрын
it does! That's why it's important to do it gently and not remove too much of the top layer. It's tricky, but that's the nature of this material! I found my wires at the Curious Gem UK
