Hi Christian from the future, I first watched this 6 years ago and just watched along with your journey just for the entertainment value, I was never interested in modular. Fast forward 6 years and I'm sat watching all of these again embarking on my own modular journey! Brilliant content still after all these years!

Going to be a brilliant rack! The main mistake I made early on was not enough modulation. Modules such as Clouds and Erbe-Verb don’t reach their full epicness (is that a word?) until multiple parameters are in flux. XAOC Devices Batumi and Pamela’s New Workout are key to my rack.

Hi Christian, glad to see your enthusiasm for modular growing! You asked for comments/advice about signal path and ideas of how to arrange your modules. Yes, a left to right signal path seems logical and sensible BUT I think the essence of modular is that you don't have to stick to the conventional VCO-VCF-VCA arrangement of a fixed architecture synth. For example simply put the amp stage before the filter and the filter responds differently and generates new and interesting sounds. I have my rack set up with oscillators at the top and bottom, filters and effects in the middle, envelopes and LFOs around that, then utilities and, for ease of access, performance controls around the edge (although I do quite enjoy delving into the spaghetti of patch cables to adjust a parameter!) One more thing I'd say is change things around sometimes. The same modules in the same case but in a different order inspire a different creation process, or a different solution for the idea that is in your head. Cheers, joni

I agree partially here synthesiseur, signal paths are indeed very much dynamic. In eurorack everything is small so I tend to organize my modules by tactile layout, meaning all the (important) knobs/pots as reachable as they can be, all the cable modules in one place. A lot manufacturers put their pots at the top and the jacks at the bottom, I like this unwritten protocol.

Hey Christian, great video as always! =) Your patch graphics start to get a bit messy with all the connections. Maybe you can clear it up a little if you color all connections from left to right in one color and from right to left in another. Best regards.

Great video - was just doing some research on how to access all this functionality in Maths - you jumped right into the deep-end... Yes, you need clock div/mult, in your rack. Pamela's New Workout or Tempi. Then perhaps en ES-3 for a perfect sync to your DAW.

Fantastically interesting and inspiring chanel! You surely have inspired me to start building my own eurorack! Keep it up, mate!

Your Optomix is a low pass filter as well as a VCA, so when you send it CV, it changes the harmonic content of the oscillator.

An idea for a modular Monday video, and topic for planning out your rack would be diving into east coast (Moog) vs west coast (Buchla) synthesis. Super interesting and you can plan your rack based on a balance of the different approaches.

Wait, routing a 1v/Oct pitch CV through the Trigger input of a Maths Channnel then out to a VCO creates a portamento effect? I would have thought it should be the arrow input, but frankly it never occurred to me to put a pitch CV directly through Maths in the first place... Interesting... And here I thought I still needed a slew limiter!
@robertsyrett19926 жыл бұрын
The diagram is wrong. The input with the arrow is the input that creates slew. Yeah, it took me a while too to realize that the way that maths works is actually an RC low-pass filter (hence the integrals on the front panel) so it can be used for portamento and smooth randoms with long rise/fall times and a low pass filter for audio with short rise/fall times. Definitely one of those modules that grows with you the more you learn.

Have to admit, I'm not getting it (not just how, but why!), but it's testament to the quality of your vids that I'm staying on the journey, despite finding myself with one eyebrow continually raised, and repeated scratching of head. I think I just enjoy watching your passion for it, even if I can't share it! Vicarious dopamine! :)

yeah.... if you've not done it then its defo a 'had to be there' thing, but i hope to create some wild sounding stuff with this soon!

What do you mean additional modules impact the character of the oscillator?
@dudeofficialchannel6 жыл бұрын
I find with analogue that you can hit one note and it really 'resonates' for the want of a better word. 'Depth' would be another. Simply... you can say more with less. The computing power currently required to mimic this is still very substantial. Hence there is still a place for the tubes, the racks, the carbon resistors etc. The Legend synth is very close, and Kemper also in the same sense. If you can pay less tax by investing in the real deal... and can manage the cable mangles and lack of recall... I'd say it is still very much 'worth it' even after the quality goes to shit in the way we are presented with audio generallyy currently. One day computers will completely indistinguishably catch up; however by then we might have a Virtual Christian?

Hey Christian, can you make a video talking about how you go about becoming a composer's assistant or landing an internship in the studio? How do you start meeting people in the business when you have no connections whatsoever? Thanks for your videos!

Suggestion for you, Christian... in the signal flow diagrams, when you make a new patch or change a patch, can you make the color of the cable different from the rest? Will help the change stand out. Thanks for doing this!

gawd i'll try, each slide is a separate omnigraffle which is a faff, maybe i'll get used to it!

You should check out a module called the ES-8 by Expert Sleepers. It's essentially a module that allows you to interface with digital CV signals, i.e. you could use modules in VCV rack to send CV and trigger output to your hardware modules, or use your hardware modules to send cv/trigs to VCV rack. Loopop has a video on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ6ycpqnmLJlm6s

Eurorack, VCV, and Ableton Live in the same Spitfire-related video ... I suddenly don't feel like such an oddball anymore. What was the Maths video you said worked better for you? I like the look MakeNoise modules because they make you think a little differently than a straightforward synth. I appreciate the yellow arrows going from module to module, but maybe try using more than one color so it's easier to follow in real time. Also, if Jamie could use one of the Click Effects in Screenflow, that'd be helpful. I use Radar with my students. Looking at your page on ModularGrid (MG), did you really buy the old model of Wogglebug (still good, just wider in HP; the new one is black). If you're planning things out there on MG, you might want to add in your power modules so you don't think you have more room that you actually do. That or take away 4HP from the width of the rack, though maybe you already did. This is a lot of fun to watch since I went through the same process. What I'm really looking forward to is seeing how you eventually use the material you generate and/or process in cues.

I know this may be a pain to edit… could you flash the virtual cable you mention when you're talking about your signal chains please? It can be difficult to follow what you're saying quickly in relation to the diagram. I love the series so far :)

Cold, complicated, boring - understandable as it is just a bunch of wires and stuff. Same thinking here until I heard Isao Tomita's stunning soundscapes of select works of Claude DeBussy - Snowflakes are Dancing. Lush impressionist, quartal harmonies, brilliant tone painting orchestrations and deft manipulation of a similar modular system (Moog system 55(?). Changed my musical life from high school on... Tomita went on to record many more collections of neo-classical and original works before his death in 2016
