Good trick !!! The water in the middle bottle fills the lower bottle and puts pressure which forces water up the tube and it overflows at the top. When the water in the middle bottle is finished, you are also finished.

Sir you have just changed my life!!!! I have a small air B and B on salty water. We love to see more animals by the water, birds and such need fresh water. We have an abundance of salt water but no fresh for the land creatures! We don't want to run power down there because of the tide, distance and other reasons. This is good knowledge. Can somebody over there improve it so that it really non stop? What if we use three bottles such that when the bottom gets empty the middle or top starts filling the bottom while the fountain continues with the other bottle. Think and think again.

FYI, a Heron's Fountain is not and was never purported to be a perpetual motion device. It is a demonstration of the principals of physics and hydraulics invented in ancient Greece (to the best of our knowledge). A better explanation and way to build one are easily found by searching the internet. It is a dandy science fair project but you will be expected to write a paper on how it works and what it is showing the observer.

Just think of it as magic. If you look closely, the water that comes out just goes up and eventually stops. The middle bottle has to be filled and the bottom bottle emptied. The top container fountain is fed by the middle bottle, filling the bottom bottle in the end. Think of it like a siphon or Pulser pump with just one bubble. The trapped air in the bottom bottle is the bubble. The water in the top dish pushes the air bubble. Which pushes the water in the second bottle to the top dish. In order to work, all the connections he's hot-gluing and the twist caps must be air tight. Using sturdy bottles that can take a bit of pressure without flexing is also helpful. and small diameter tubing of course, a nozzle on the top also helps. The bigger the total height and the distance between the bottom and middle, the bigger the stream. The bigger the containers, the longer the time it will run.
