Why do you measure the last length from the side instead of the bottom

Very good question. So there are several takes on how to measure the last length . Some shoemakers measure the bottom, some just go with what the last maker indicates to be the last Length. Some use that confusing chart that lists standard lengths for different sizes. Yet again, I have come across at least one text book that measures the lateral side. As to why I chose this later method, I think it is the intuitively logical thing to do. Most of the parts that you are trying to design are on the sides so it just makes sense to design them as proportions of that side and not the bottom which doesn't even become relevant until you start constructing your soles. Now, I appreciate that some lasts will come with elongated tips which potentially will throw my formulas off. I have a system for dealing with that but it certainly isn't measuring just the bottom since that problem will be present with the bottom measurement as well.

Someone taught me that the instep point is aquatter of total length plus aquatter of an inch....but you didn't add... please can you explain why you didn't add the aquatter of an inch..thanks for your classes

The person is probably using the concept of Standard Last Lengths in calculating his/her points. I on the other hand have jettisoned the idea of Standard Last Lengths in preference to the actual Last Length; which I find gives accurate results for a quarter without the need for any other additions.

But standard last length and actual last length means the same thing right?

@@namugeereteddy9095 not so. The standard last length is a length assigned to the last by the last maker. It seldom correlates with the actual measurements you will get on the last if you take your own readings.

I think you mean the tracing channels. It is a channel that allows you trace the pattern lines onto leather so that the various parts can thereafter be cut out.
