Rent to Grown

Күн бұрын

Every now and then I get a little extra manic and I act on some pretty wild ideas. This was one of them. I was watching the BBC Channel 4 show "Time Team" and I decided that if people had been making clay pots for thousands of years, I should be able to do the same. With that in mind, I researched how to make earthen clay from dirt in my yard. I also researched how to make a pottery glaze from scratch using ash and other materials. I'm still looking into ground kilns and pit firing, but I'll be able to show more about those adventures in future videos.

Best way that I have found to get the silt out using the levigation process is to siphon it out into a clean bucket after letting it settle for about 10 to 15 min after agitating. I do this about 10 times (or untill you see minimal silt and black sand), leaving the siphon hose about a half inch from the bottom, so the black sand and heavy particles stay behind and do not get sucked into the hose, after transferring I then let the clay settle overnight and siphon the clear water off the top each day, (takes about a week as patience is the key for quality clay) You will end up with very very pure fine clay, once it is the consistency of say thin pancake batter, I pour it onto a plaster bat made from plaster of paris, it dries very quickly or use the pillowcase method.... Then its ready to be wedged, and stored or used, the longer it sits or "ages", the more plastic it becomes, you can add vinegar to make it even more plastic if desired. Try it...its a lengthy process but worth it if you are serious about making primitive style clay for pottery. Best thing it's free. Hope this helps!!

I went to the bakery in my local grocery store and got a 5 gallon bucket just by asking. I was prepared to slip the worker a few bucks but she let me have it for nothing, and it still had a few cups of buttercream frosting in the bottom.

Very nice work 👍 well done, what materials are added to the clay when massaged to become obedient and solid?

Great question! The clay will just need to dry some in order to become workable. After it has been worked into the desired shape, it can be sun or air dried to become "greenware" which would return to clay when introduced to water. In order to keep the worked shape, it would need to be fired in a kiln. I hope that helps!
