Thank you. The idea of a central 'idea' in a piece, that is then decorated with context is such a cool way to think about it. This analogy alone has given me lots to think about. I struggle to create a memorable 'point' to my score. This method of composition sounds promising.

Glad to hear! Thinking about it in this way simplifies things a lot and makes it easier to make the right decisions - most iconic scores has a very defined focal point

Dear Arn, thank you for this beautiful example and your very helpful, detailed explanations. This will help me to structure my pieces and tonal elements in a more connected and supportive way. (Wonderful images in your video examples, by the way.)

Absolutely will do, it's one of the next on the list. Very much the same core principles but different executions!

REALLY AMAZING VIDEO. CAN YOU SHOW USE HOW TO MAKE ATMOSPHERE TEXTURES FROM SCRATCH BECAUSE I DONT HAVE KONTAKT 😢

I will! These textures don’t require Kontakt though, they are wav files so just drag and drop/repitch etc!

Good demonstration, but what I'm writing music that's a bit more harmonically complex and moves the tonal center a lot?
@Evenant

While this video is geared for more minimal misic, the same core principles apply to creating a background, middleground and foreground - you’d just have to follow the harmonic developments. John Williams is a great example - Hedwigs theme for example utilized the celeste runs in the middleground, a melody in the forefront, and more harmonically moving chords in the back. A background texture could be a repeating string ostinato, and woodwind and harp runs and brass swells could act as ear candy too.

@@Evenant I've actually seen your video on Hedwig's theme. My question was about the static ambiances (with a very clear tonal center), what would you do if your piece moved to a tonally unrelated chord/different key center? Also, minimal music doesn't necessarily imply basic diatonic harmony. See composers like Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams, and so on. To put it most concretely, how would you apply your background textures to a piece like Phrygian Gates [1] by John Adams as it moves through different tonalities?

@@Evenant Thinking on it a bit more, one example of textures/ambiances switching tonal centers occurs in Thomas Bergersen's Humanity around the 8 minute mark: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqfZimysdp6LbZosi=RBFBY0lzDgqHKva7&t=476

@snarf1504 good points! Listening to that track it’s staying on each chord for so long one could treat it pretty similarly. Of course making the background textures move with each harmonic change and making the textures swell into the new chord, which I could do as my kits have atmospheres recorded in each key, or by supplementing with libraries such as Spirfire LCO Textures, or Olafur Arnalds String Evolutions. Could make a video demonstrating that as well! I'd also think of voice leading and try move the shortest way to a note that works with the next tonal center, playing along with Phrygian Gates I can use any notes in C# minor for the first 2.30 minutes, then at around 2.45 it just shifts a semitone up to Dminor, then at 3.15 one semitone up to D# etc
