It's iridescence caused by the formation of ice crystals in the atmosphere, which I, for one, think is incredibly neat. You can find more examples by looking up Cloud iridescence on Google. There's some really cool ones out there.

@@redfailhawk Interesting, I didnt know dogs went for mice or other small animals. My dogs have only ever attacked and eaten bugs. I'm on my own with two cats now though and needless to say they will attack and toy with anything smaller than them.

I am once again annoyed at the misunderstanding of the meaning of "sentient". I am not blaming Lumo or Laini, it is a common misconception that they are just following. "Sentient" means having senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste), while the word for intelligence is "sapient" and "sapience" - also used in the human species name "homo sapiens", because as far as we can tell, we are the only ones with the sort of intelligence and ability to abstract thinking we possess. However, in respect to the octopus, they are so smart they are near-sapient.
