Ever since I bought a ryoba a year and a half ago, I have not touched a western saw. Maybe I should.

I use both, depending on the job and my mood. I think you should give a good western saw a whirl, more fun!

it is an interesting point. and the answer is, it depends. On handles that are too small to fit your whole hand, the index finger necessarily points down the length of the blade. However, on larger longer saws, a firm grip is necessary to maintain full control, especially for those with certain physical issues. Smaller hands too would probably benefit from a full grip on the handle so that the grip may be a relaxed as possible while still maintaining full control of the saw, especially on longer saws. This Pax is fully 30" long. I have a tremor disorder, so I need to control the entire handle as much as I can, while still keeping the hand relaxed. In my case, that necessitates a full handle. One can make a handle tailored to your particular needs in about an hour.
