I feel like there are a million tutorials on visuals, but not a lot on audio or how each tool works. You did a really great job of explaining everything. I would like to get more in depth with each of the tools because I think that a lot of videos are just recipes without too much explanation as to what each ingredient does.

The moment you kneel on the floor and thank god that there are actually tutorials with value. A bloke explaining why things are doing what they are doing, after you were about to surrender and throw out your laptop, as ALL the other intro heavy/i am this and that/a lot of people have been asking me/just look at me blokes just explain the tip of the ice berg without knowing ANY background. And they would ask you to subscribe anyway within the first 3 seconds, while this dude makes me subscribe mid way by myself. Awesome.

This is by far the greatest tutorial I have ever seen on KZbin. I really mean that and the reason is, you do something no one else bothers to do. Everyone else just gives the whole "you set this to that and play around" ordeal. You however actually took the time to say "Hey here's how you find the problems and how you fix them if they're there" that EQ bit was really great man thank you

You’re welcome! Glad you found the video helpful. Check out some of my other videos, my style is very similar. I try to keep things simple for everybody. 😁 But when I went through the DaVinci Resolve audio Effects series, I did say you’ve got a play around with things to get the sound you’re looking for. 😜

When normalizing consider using the true peak versus sampled. (Drop down choice). True peak is likely the better Choice unless there is unnatural spikes.

After watching this I realise what I have been doing wrong. Thank you for explaining things and showing things the way you do. I truly am very excited to put these new tricks to work. @@JasonYadlovski you have no idea how useful this video was, i shot a wedding and they had no way to plug into the PA system to record the vows so i had to roll with a simple wireless mic on the groom alone (which inadvertently got moved to the inside of his coat before the ceremony). Another good way to get volume from a mic is to simply pull it closer to you. This can help increase the volume, give it a different warmth and help it focus less on other noise around the environment. A good technique for moderate to good mics is to stick your thumb and pinky as far away from each other on one hand and touch the thumb to your lips and and your pinky to the mic. This can help give you a consistent distance from you to the mic, but not have you right on top of it (unless it's a dynamic mic where you want to be right on top of it).

Put the mic on a mic stand just out of frame, record peaks at +/- -9dB, use some ('sound' blankets) if your room has a lot of reflection. It will save so much work in post. A little Eq and compression should get you halve way there. If you listen to something that is louder; you perceive it as better... If you compare, get things equally loud! Happy mixing!

This video is kind of backwards. I was taught that you are supposed to gate your noise floor before you compress your audio and that EQ is supposed to be done before applying dynamics. That jives with the order in which Fairlight displays the EQ and Dynamics options. IIRC, it tends to distort audio a bit without realizing it if those things are handled out of order. Most of this video stems from the fact that automatic audio normalization is a fundamentally broken tool. The standard automatic audio normalization tool normalizes the audio across a whole track by picking the max peak and setting the boost to a static level that never exceeds that peak, which almost always produces undesirable results. The sample track used in the video demonstrates the problem: There is one brief moment of loudness compared to the rest of the track and so that becomes the max peak while the vast majority of the rest of the track falls well below the target dB level. Compression is the hack that most people then use to compensate but compression actually distorts the original sound. Everyone is in the market for a better audio normalizer that auto-ducks the 1-2 peaks that happen sporadically across a very large sample window (e.g. 15-30 seconds), allowing for better overall normalization of a track. A tool like that would probably be the single greatest improvement to audio normalization in the last 30 years and wouldn't be hard for NLE authors to build an auto-ducking timeline-based normalizer (i.e. adds adjustable points to the timeline around areas that critically peak and then adjust the rest of the track) but no one does it for whatever reason. Manually adjusting audio loudness levels gets fairly tedious and is time-consuming, which is why people are lazy and abuse compression after a quick normalize. It generally produces passable results in a fraction of the time. Most users are looking to get the project out the door, which is totally okay, but the folks behind the NLE software could be providing better audio normalization tools to help everyone.

Hi! Totally legit and constructive feedback, thanks. Honestly I don't know why I did things in this order in this video. I always set my levels, apply EQ, apply dynamics and then any effects. Must have been a complete oversight on my part, duh! 🤦‍♂️ I'm actually working on another audio series and the first vid is to set the levels followed by EQ, then dynamics. I actually address the same thing you just mentioned regarding normalizing and the peaks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feedback, I appreciate it! 😁👍

Hi Jason, all of these reverb presets are a bit too much. What reverb settings do you recommend for a singing voice? I need a more subtle setting than the ones offered by the presets.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Without knowing what the vocal sounds like and what effect you are going for, what I would do is to choose one of the presets, then go to the wet/dry mix dial, turn it to zero and slowly turn it up. That way just a little of the effect is mixed in and you should be able to make a nice balance. It's rare that you would use any of the presets at full blast. Hope that works out!

Given that my hearing ain't what it used to be, some of the differences are pretty subtle, but they *do* add up. I've tried some as you were going through this and will for sure be using them in the future. Thanks for the tips! Question: Other than the right mic and a pop filter, what can you do to reduce plosives in post?
@JasonYadlovski

Thanks for watching! Other than a pop filter, you can try speaking past the mic instead of directly into it. I did that most of the time with my Yeti, even though it had a pop filter. Here's a video on how I set up my mic and got the best out of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKfJmaaIiNtnh6c

Super helpful, Jason, thank you! I have 2 questions for you: 1 - when I'm scrubbing band 3 and 4 for "weird" sounds...what exactly are we looking for? Something that just sounds really hollow and odd? I've found some really odd sounding stuff usually between 1-2k range, but once I dip the gain and replay the audio...I can't seem to hear the difference. I DID hear it when I brought the gain all the way up to scrub though... 2 - Can you explain what Hold and Release means in the tools?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! To answer your questions - 1) You just looking for something that sounds bad. For example, muffled, it has a piercing quality to it, sound very hallow or when you hit that frequency, you think, ew that sounds bad. Then drop the Gain just a bit below the 0 line. The goal is just to pull out frequencies that sound harsh. If you reduce the gain too much, it's going to sound bad as well. Usually with EQ, less is more and always cut before you boost anything. 2) Hold is referring to the length of time that the compressor (I'm assuming you mean in the compressor) remains active after it stops receiving a signal. For example, there is talking, then the talking stops. Hold determines how long the compressor is active after the talking stop. Release refers to how long it takes from the time the compressor stops (determined by the hold) until the compressor is completely off/inactive. So do you want the audio to go back to 'normal' fast or slow? A larger Release means it gradually fade back to normal over a long period of time. Does that all make sense? If not, let me know. Hope this helps!
@realmisr
@realmisr 4 жыл бұрын
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for that, Jason! The question about hold + release is actually pertaining to using Gate. I know I'm to mess with those 2 options if I'm hearing my voice cut in and cut out, but I wasn't sure what they 2 options actually did. I guess I want to make the gate "less sensitive" if you get what I'm saying. Sometimes I would be speaking just a bit low, and the Gate would pick that up and cut it off completely.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 4 жыл бұрын
The hold and release mean the same thing for the gate. It should work in the same fashion. If you want it to be less sensitive, you'd probably want to also adjust the threshold, range and ratio.

Another good video Jason, but why are you working with 2 audio tracks when your source is just Mono? I always delete one of the channels for 2 reasons - one, it's easier on the eye to look at one waveform and two, any noise on either channel will be significantly reduced.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 2 жыл бұрын
I leave it in stereo sometimes because that’s how it comes in. You can just change the track to mono instead of deleting one of the channels to.

Hi! I haven't tried that method of removing the background noise. I find if the background noise is too loud it's really tough to remove and just keep the vocals. At least with the tools in DaVinci Resolve. Thanks for watching!
