I love cooler weather moto camping. No bugs and no crowds in the national forests. A friend and I went camping in the Hoosier National Forest in Indiana last year on December 8th. The night time low was 32 F. I slept in a hammock and was a bit chilly. I went home and bought a Hennessy 4 Season Explorer XL Zip hammock. It has an open cell foam pad in a pocket under the hammock, similar to a sleeping pad in a tent. It works similarly to a hammock under quilt only much better. I now sleep comfortably in freezing weather in a hammock, and I can go lower with an added sleeping pad inside the hammock for more insulation. Pitching the fly directly over the hammock ridge line and not staking out the fly so there is a static air bubble under the hammock adds 15 F of warmth, which is amazing. I concur with the hat tip. I have a heavy duty balaclava that keeps me very warm for its weight and bulk. The human body increases blood flow to the head to ensure the brain is warm and that wastes a lot of heat. Want to stay warm? Keep the heat in your head. Heated grips are my cold weather secret weapon. I spent $120 and three hours adding them to the bike. This was my first experience with heated grips. I thought they'd be a seldom used luxury. I use the heated grips all the time and I can't imagine having a bike without heated grips. Winters are milder here than they were when I was younger. The days are shorter and it rains more often, but I'm semi retired and can pick and choose my days. If we get a couple of decent days in the winter, I'm going moto camping!

Great tips! We’re heading out next weekend for 3 days in Lone Pine/Death Valley CA! I use an Iphone tripod stand, headphones and downloaded movies on KZbin Red for tent entertainment!

We all like to avoid the summer season crowds, too. Early October I made a trip to Tahoe/Truckee, Ca. area. Researched "where" I wanted to camp on Google maps- but did not go the step further to see when those camps closed for the season. Many closed the week after Labor Day (even though weather was still nice). Glove liners for riding are perfect for camp mornings and nights.

Summer in the west is fantastic, in the south we sweat like pigs. Shoulder season is great

A transplant from southern Idaho to Oklahoma here. Shoulder season camping is the only time I go camping now. learned my lesson trying camping in the summer in OK. Fall is my favorite time anywhere. I've done week long canoe trips spring and fall. quiet and amazing experience..

I'm putting together some gear to go camping this Christmas (It's New Zealand ok, our hottest month is January) I have luggage on the way, a tent, mat, sleeping bag, cookware & burner... working my way through the list and seeing what can be smaller, lighter and worse than what I used to have 30 years ago as an Airforce Cadet playing those games (just a little more advanced than Scouts) It has been so long that I can't rely on memory anymore. what are the easily overlooked things that people forget? It's hard enough trying to figure out if I should have one saddle bag designated for bike repair, or have all of the heavy stuff right at the bottom of both so I have to empty both of them to fix something...

Old army guy tip. Use a Gatorade bottle in your tent, to pee in. Then you don’t have to get out of your sleeping bag. It works great
