We're gonna build on that foundation that we started with in part one and take a look at a really common example and sometimes a really challenging example of a situation where we might need to pop our grades.

Having stepped away from the Internet for about a year, I am binging to catch up. I know I recently saw you talk about not liking parallel nodes, or not understanding their value. And now I see that you’re using them. I seem to also remember you mentioning changing your attitude towards them, but it would be great to see him more in-depth look at what changed in your mind and under what circumstances you feel comfortable using parallel nodes .

I'd like to know more about the difference between using HSL & HSV channel 2 saturation colour spaces.

That was a waayy bigger change than I expected with the HSL bit and I dig it! But the LUT at the end seemed to turn her hair blue. I'd love to see a video where you sample all the LUTs so we can see more of what is included in the pack to know what we're getting if we want to buy it.

Not a fan of the LUT, grade was cleaner before (especially for a commercial look that it obv should be for the clip). Would much rather have the LUT pack as power grade pieces as supposed to finished LUTs. In case you want to slightly modify them

Holy smokes, that HSL adjustment!!! Have you (or anyone here) tried bumping saturation in the mids with the HDR wheels? What’s your experience?

I think that dragging the dropper around is just marking the last spot it is on while on the source monitor. I don't see it sampling the whole area. Could be wrong but if you have two colors it doesn't seem to process the combination

I find when I do the technique of normalizing the saturation by bringing the gamma down that much, it creates a lot of blocking in areas where there's a subtle color gradient. I'm working in 10 bit footage, so I feel like it shouldn't be doing this - any suggestions? Is it something in my settings? Or is 10 bit not enough to put pumping the color saturation that hard?
@Left_it

i think the final grade has a lot of blue in the shadows, which feels a bit unnatural considering that the scene is lit from orange sunlight through the windows. It is a commercial grade though so I respect that

Cullen, you increased gamma to add sat, then lowered gain to compress sat in the highlights. Can you decrease lift a hair to reduce sat in the lower end?

@JimibobThun Жыл бұрын
What‘s the difference between HSL and HSV? In your saturation video, you used HSV and now HSL.
@KaurH
@KaurH Жыл бұрын
HSV is a color model that defines brightness (value) as the maximum value of a color's RGB components, while HSL defines brightness as the perceived brightness of a color. Both models use the same hue and saturation components. As such, setting HSL's L to max always results in white, while setting HSV's V to max can get you both white and the brightest versions of all the hues.

But if the H and S channels are the same, why choose HSL in this case instead of HSV when manipulating sat?
@KaurH
@KaurH Жыл бұрын
@@VictorRiley HSV doesn't have a L channel. Basically, if you use the Hue channel, there's no different, but for S and L/V channel stuff, just try out both models.

@@KaurH I'm sorry, that was a typo. I edited my original comment to make it clearer what I meant.
@KaurH
@KaurH Жыл бұрын
@@VictorRiley Well, in HSL, with a luminance of 1 the only thing you can get is pure white. Hue and sat don't matter. With HSV you can modify saturation when value is 1. This is just an example of a difference. I recommend googling HSV vs HSL and looking at images to see how the color models look like.

Another great video. Any concerns with the REDs popping out so far off the vectorscope target box? Is that something you would compress later?
@Schwarz.Medien
@Schwarz.Medien Жыл бұрын
It looks like cullen has his vectorscope at 2x, so the red would be technically fine, but indeed it's far from a dense "filmic" red.

Hi Cullen, I was hoping you could further explain why the HSL method you shared might be more effective than using the Sat v Sat curve. It seems to me like that could accomplish the same goal by lifting up the saturation in the middle of the curve and bringing down the control points at the top end of the curve. Or is there a philosophical difference between these two methods that we should be aware of?
@CullenKelly
@CullenKelly Жыл бұрын
Hey Vincent! Great question…Sat v Sat would totally work here. But one fun thing about doing it this way is that you can flip between HSL and HSV and audition which you prefer.
@vincentlomascolo
@vincentlomascolo Жыл бұрын
@@CullenKelly Awesome, thanks for the clarification! One follow up question I have then is do you know whether the sat v sat curve uses the math behind the HSL or HSV method? Or entirely different? I was looking through the 500 pages of the resolve manual and didn't see a mention of the underlying formula. Granted I was just using "Command F" through the pdf so I may have missed it. Thanks again! Your community building of colorists is such a valuable support. Very grateful!

I’ve seen people add colors like green in the shadows and magenta in highlights, but it was in photos. So I’m not completely sure if this can apply in video.(which you can, just not sure if it’ll look good on x material)
