How to make Templates for Electric Guitars. If you are a DIY Guitar hobbyist, or even if this is your first crack at building electric guitars you would want to get the details.
Every guitar build starts with a plan, and templates are the easiest and most consistent way to transform that plan to a guitar. Unless you are building a guitar kit, Templates for your guitar are a sure bet.

To mitigate the issue of a hand held router tipping, fix an offset piece of MDF to the base, this increases it's surface area preventing tipping. Practically every router has holes in the base to do this.

Thanks for the comment @PC-vx2er. You are very correct and I actually show that in this video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoCwl2OuadOUndksi=PsrOFF5f4ANSgM7A). I also assume many people will just use the router as-is, so I try and accommodate them as well. Cheers

The way I went about it for starting my own line of guitars is getting my stuff CNCd at a local machine shop. I used FreeCAD's Mars guitar workbench to create my fretboard templates, since they are multi scale necks, which were pretty much ready to become CNC templates. I also converted the files into SVGs, and created the drawing of my guitar body using Inkscape. I pretty much made a hybrid of 2 of my favorite guitar designs by tracing images of them and combing them until I was satisfied. I could have gotten my body template CNCd too, but I decided to just print it onto paper, tape them together, double side tape it to MDF and rout the shape by hand.
@yoavbinyamini
@yoavbinyamini Жыл бұрын
Well, @user-hl3vv6pu1k, using a CNC surely takes the build to a new level. If you know how to create the CAD files and you have access to a CNC (or know how to set it up) you will save a lot of work and probably get very accurate results. There is something to be said for manual work here. If I wanted to go commercial, I would definitely consider a CNC. Cheers.

Great video. I would reccomend either saftey goggles or even better ski goggles for eye protection. I cut boards all day long for a living, and I have learned that particles will still find their way around the saftey glasses and get into my eyes. Goggles keep stuff out 95% of the time, but the real way to keep stuff from flying in my eyes is ski goggles. I have had alot of days with the regular safety glasses cutting notches out of 2×4's in the wind. Believe me saw dust hurts when its flying into your eyes at 40 miles per hour.
@yoavbinyamini
@yoavbinyamini 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment @David Shafer. 🙏 I agree that you can never be too safe and I have had particles bypass safety glasses myself. This is even worst with routers than saws because of the higher rpm. When playing with MDF however, my bigger concern would be breathing the particles. MDF dust is very fine and nasty and your normal Covid mask will not cut it. I use the 3M mask (amzn.to/3E2ZtIi) and with the proper filters, it's also great for spray painting. Cheers

@yoavbinyamini 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have enough experience with Acrylic, but it does sound like you would get the best result with Laser' although that would be true for MDF as well.. If I came across a nice piece of acrylic and wanted to make a good template out of it, (sans laser) I would probably make an MDF one first and copy it to the Acrylic

It's a great video and I like your simplistic outlook. The only thing I'm thinking of atm is, skillset. Does one possess the ability 🤔 or should that one just leave it to the pro's? 😆 yesterday I had to begin to fix a neck alignment problem on a already made guitar. I had some issues with brain clarity and accidentally filled the neck pocket holes instead of just learning that I simply needed to file the neck pocket where it was not aligned correctly 🙃. It was a huge mistake. I ended up filling the holes with mahogany dowels that I had to make and now I'm creating a neck plate template so I can re drill the holes for the neck. It's a nightmare but my head is clear and my skill set is better cause the fog has gone. I couldn't believe I did that. Best advice was make sure the center marks are done dead on. I'm making a template cause I don't have a drill press and need to not drill the holes crooked in my second attempt. Lol. Much better this time, the holes in the template are straight. Just have to clamp and drill now. Wish me luck cause I think I need it. I'm just not good at math so everything has to be done to ,are it easier. Thanks for the tips.

Great comment @ranman58635. You rarely learn much from success. I have definitely learned more from my mistakes than when everything goes smoothly. As someone who builds for his pleasure, there are some mistakes you just can't fix. But those critical ones you do manage to overcome are those that will make you a better builder. I try and share my own mistakes to save you the trouble. Cheers

@DanPalmerCeramics

I'm probably a bit late on this but I recently worked this out. You need to print your image split across multiple pages or 'tiled'. I did it by exporting my guitar sections (body, neck etc) to separate pdf files at full size (I used Inkscape to design the guitar and that's where i export from). Now, in Acrobat, you can print them as tiles but I can only do that if you first print via 'Microsoft Print to PDF' (I'm on a Windows machine). You select that instead of your printer in the Print window. Then the 'Poster' option is activated (it was greyed out before). Make sure you are printing at 100% ad having 'cut marks' or 'crop marks' on helps you slice the pages accurately later. Now print the file to pdf. Once done you can open the tiled pages as pdf and print them on your printer to paper. Cut carefully along cut marks and around your edges and stick it all together. Easy! Haha. It is but took a bit of working out

Iam a luthier in Africa --usually use local hardwoods --very heavy --CAN I USE PINE WOOD FOR THE BODY of a TELE?----desperate to get LIGHT body --no other wood here is as light as cheapo pine pallets!--IS. this possible???

Early Telecasters were made with pine. It is a soft wood though. And you likely need thicker pieces than pallets. But yes you can

What is the 3d software you used to make your templates
@yoavbinyamini
@yoavbinyamini Жыл бұрын
Hi @jimmyhumphrey_5975 and thanks for the comment. I am not sure which 3rd software you mean. I use Photoshop (or anything similar) for all the planning and sketching parts and Adobe Acrobat for printing. I am not sure of the printing capabilities of other PDF Reader, But Acrobat Reader is free and does the job. As I mentioned the graphic software can also be a free one (unlike Photoshop) but it needs to have the option of working to scale. Let me know if I missed anything. Cheers

Are you using a bench grinder to do your sanding at around 7 mins in?
@theelectricluthier1928
@theelectricluthier1928 4 жыл бұрын
It's an old bench grinder that I converted to a 7" sander. I have a 60 grit paper on one side and alternate the other with finer ones. It's great.

@@theelectricluthier1928 Thats cool, I like the idea of having one tool to do multiple jobs. So do you just stick the sandpaper onto a grinding wheel? Or is it an actual sanding wheel that you have?
@theelectricluthier1928
@theelectricluthier1928 4 жыл бұрын
@@nausicaa262 I replaced the grinder stones with two layers of 18mm MDF I cut to 7" discs which are glued together to give thickness. One layer has a hole large enough for the shaft and the outer one has a larger hole to fit the bolt that holds it, so it doesn't stick out. I sanded it with an orbital sander while it was rotating to get a smooth and balanced disc (it shakes like crazy until it balances). I then put strips of adhesive velcro on the outer flat side (covering the bolt). The sandpaper attaches to the velcro. I also added the little shelves on the sides. Hope it's clear enough...

My computer doesn't have poster mode
@theelectricluthier1928
@theelectricluthier1928 3 жыл бұрын
This has nothing to do with your computer. If you open a PDF file (you have to save it as a PDF file) the 'poster' mode should be in the print options of Adobe Acrobat. Make sure you have it instaled, in case you were using another application. (It's free). I go into a bit more detail in my Strat Body build video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fImcomaJbLaLgsU&ab_channel=TheElectricLuthier
