Well, at last. Someone who can explain the Rhythm Converter to me. Okay, Good. Now, I can stick some my blues beats in the RC505mk2 . Thank you so much. When I opened the RC Converter months ago, I looked at it on the screen for about 35 seconds, said, “nope. Not now.” I had to learn the mark2 first, anyhow. But now, this is just what I needed. I made a rhythm. It is 29 bars long. My variation D is 22 bars and starts from bar 8. From bar 8 to 21 has one drum pattern; bar 22 to 29 has another drum pattern. When i play variation D, it only plays the first pattern and ignores the second pattern. Any insights?

Hey Greg. 👋 So the RC-600 will continue to say ‘connecting’ and not connected. It just does. Strange little quirk but when it say connecting it means that it is indeed connected.

Another great video. Do you have to use the editor? Can I just import a mid file into the rhythm section? Also, how do I use the rhythm in a practical development of a song? Is this set up globally, by track, and how do you activate the variations?

So the other questions you have are answered by the first question. Yes you have to use the software cause the software tells the looper what is a fill and what is a variation by splitting up the midi track. You can import the midi file into the software and then dictate the variations and stuff. Then once it’s moved over, it’s in the ‘user’ section of the rhythm menu. Just be aware that you won’t have a user section if you haven’t imported anything. Hope that makes sense.

Awesome videos JP! Question for you. After I've opened the RC Rhythm Converter and connected my RC600 via USB the RC600 screen display changes to Editor Mode and says "Connecting" with the switch lights cycling through colors. But it just hangs up there. Consequently I'm not able to audition the midi files in the Rhythm Converter app through the RC600. The USB must be working as I'm able to play audio and midi files from Logic through the RC600. Any idea what's causing the hang up? Thanks!

Oooh that’s weird. Might just be a glitch with the display. Are you on PC or Mac? Have you downloaded the driver for the computer to recognise what the RC600 is. It’s in the same place you download the RC Rhythm Converter.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thanks JP. I'm on Mac OS 10.15. Logic 10.5.1. RC 600 System 1.12 installed. Boss Driver for OS 10.15 installed. RC 600 USB set to Vendor per install instructions. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. No change. When starting the RC Rhythm Converter app, the App connects to the RC (the RC600 icon appears on my desktop), but the RC 600 hangs up with "Connecting" on the display. No audio output or functions available on RC-600 until I quit Rhythm Converter app. Any ideas appreciated! Thanks!

@@zacamomusic8955 I had a problem with the RC Rhythm Converter hanging, however it was not connecting on the Mac side (although the RC600 showed "Connecting" and the lights were flashing). Although I'm using macOS 12.5 (and the corresponding mac 11/12 driver), I resolved my issue by setting the System/USB/Audio to "Generic" rather than "VENDOR" as described in the READMe for the driver. In your case, first check if you had set all the Sound Preferences (Sound Effects, Output, Input) to "RC600" before changing to the Generic setting. If that doesn't work, try setting the System/USB/Audio to "Generic" and the Sound Preferences to "Audio OUT". In my case, that works... the lights continue flashing, however I can preview the MIDI drum sounds hitting play on the RC Rhythm Converter tool bar.

Disconnect the RC-600 and Switch the computer off and on again to power cycle the unit. This will reset the rhythm converter and should help.

I'm new at all the music world. I need to learn everything at the same time because we have no musicians and I need to direct the music in my church. I have been doing it for more than 5 years without music. I use my hand for the tempo. I decided to learn to play instruments and use the RC600 to help me do this. I have a guitalele, a ukulele baraton and the bass. But my biggest problem is that many of the songs are in 3/4 time and some in 6/8 time. How can I do this either with the midi or the Boss RC600? You can’t. This is converting midi files into the looper. Doesn’t work the other way round.

I have imported a midi file easily from EZDRUMMER and got it to play on Memory 1, track 1 as a verse. I'm assuming I can import another MIDI file for say the bridge then chorus and just assign them to track 2 and track 3? I'm using single mode for the six switches/tracks and using play/stop for each. I want to be able to switch from verse, bridge and chorus on the fly. I'm assuming I can record a loop over any of them which I haven't gotten to yet, just trying to figure out the rhythm section first. Thanks heaps!!!

Because when I turn the app on my Mac laptop computer, I don’t hear any sound coming out from the RC converter app at all even if I change the audio out put on the computer audio setting. Not familiar with using Reaper’s UI but make sure the midi is being sent out to the same midi channel (normally channel 10) so that the RC-600 can pick it up.

This is for the RC Rhythm section so yes it is a .mid However, it’s a looper first and foremost so there is nothing stopping you recording samples in as a loop.

Plug your RC-600 into speakers as you normally would (or use headphones) when plugging the usb in for this. It should kick in automatically. If not, check your audio routing.

Thanks for the tutorial. Does anyone know if you can mix up the time signature within the same song. Example start off at 7/8 for 8 bars then back to 4/4 for 4 bars then back to 7/8? Thanks

No. But.. what you can do is jump between memories. So if you have a memory playing at 7/8 and then want to go to 4/4 you can go up a memory and if you have it set with something on there already, it will carry on playing seamlessly. Same if you jump down a memory. Hope that helps. 👍🏻

No. You connect the RC with a USB cable. This can transmit the data. You do not need to use a midi cable.

Can you mention which version of firmware you are using and what MacOS level? I've been trying to use the RC Rhythm Converter however it never successfully connects. I'm using the current RC-600 firmware 1.12 and MacOS 12.4. The Mac RC driver is loaded, the RC USB audio set to "VENDOR", the System Preferences for Sound are all set to RC-600 as specified in the instructions yet when starting the RC Rhythm Converter, the following message pops up: "Device already occupied. Please stop looper or quit BTS application." In my case, the Boss Tone Studio (BTS) is not even installed and the loop is in ALL STOP. Thanks for any suggestions.

I finally resolved the issue, but the solution appears contrary to the driver instructions and others may have the same problem (I had posted the issue on the RC-600 FB group). My setup is a 2020, Intel-based 27" iMac running macOS Monterey 12.5 and firmware 1.12 on the RC-600. The driver instructions say to set RC USB to "VENDOR" and the Sound Preferences (Sound Effects, Output, Input) all to "RC600". This did not work for me. Instead, I reset the System on the RC-600. The RC USB is now set to "Generic". All of the Sound Preferences on the iMac are now set to "Audio OUT". Now the RC Rhythm Converter connects. The same settings work for the Boss Tone Studio (BTS). Just for fun, I also tested the "Generic" setting on a Windows system using the Generic driver and settings. Both RC Rhythm and BTS connect successfully. Thanks again.

Hey Chris 👋 Ooh! So does the file start EXACTLY on the beat?.. it could be a few milliseconds out and therefore out of sync. The other way to get round this would be to split up the loops into sections and import them into the 3 or 6 loops and play them in single mode. Alternatively, record the file in AS a loop.. but sounds like you are using it like a backing track.

Just in case this might help… I’ve had some severe sync problems importing midi files from Protools HD. No trouble with Midi files from Logic. I assume there’s some SMPTE or some Midi coding issues there.

@@JohnPaulMusicUK ahh, much appreciated!! I think I'm going to setup Mode 2 to cycle through drum variations and styles. I notice there doesn't seem to be a limit to the variation length, going to use that to my advantage to make 32 measure long parts with different fills every 16 measures. I also considered a memory setting where I can record a bass/crash hit from the internal drum to operate as a one shot sample; got that idea from the Beatbuddy Pedal. Haven't seen too many people try to extend the mileage of the built in drums. Wish effects could directly be applied to drum tracks, bouncing rerouted drums can get around that I suppose, but at the loss of an empty track.. I have a couple of ideas I wish they could implement in future firmware updates..

This is a known error but also can be okay. If it’s working and plays but just constantly says “connecting”, don’t panic. Apparently it’s down to the age of the Mac and which version of MacOS your running?

Hi Do you know if it is possible to get the rhythm midi from the rc 600 onto your computer? I made a song based around a drum pattern i found on the looper and would now like to export the wavs of the guitar parts in to a daw, and have the original rhythm in there also, do you know if this is possible? Hey 👋 If you use the RC Tone Studio you can get your waves but not the wavs of the rhythm. My advice would be to bounce the rhythms to a new loop track. If you have any of the 6 tracks spare, you can bounce the rhythm to a clear track and then pull that as a wav. If all 6 loops are taken up, duplicate the memory to a new one and erase one of the loops and then bounce the rhythm so you have it. 👍🏼

No. Just go to Menu - Output - Routing /Rhythm- scroll all the way to the end and the Rhythm output can be changed to ‘loop’. Change this and now you can record you rhythms as loop. 👍🏻 be careful of overdub phasing thou if you have your machine on Rec/Dub instead of Rec/Play (which it is on Rec/Play as standard). 👍🏻

You won’t. It will be playing through the RC-600, not your computer.

Yes. As it is just midi, the bpm is completely adjustable and the sounds will be fine. 👍🏻

Also, Though everything seems to be in place, i cant get any midi files i dragged from the sound library played on Logic after connecting Rc600. Wave the blue ones playing but cant hear any sound if its a midi file. Any ideas? Thank you mate

This is dedicated software for the Boss RC-600/RC-505mkii. You need to download the software from Boss. This is not Ableton.

I have bossrc600 and i have rhythm converter :D but you use DAW in the middle. I have Ableton. And a a MIDI I use onllu my macs keys in Ableton. i have some drum tracks to some songs that i want to put in that have time signature changes mid song. I'm using reaper exporting drum tracks to midi.. songs like Grease mega Mix.. or "Come on Eileen".. has anyone discovered a work around getting them to work

I haven't but thinking off the top of my head a way round it would be to put it all at one tempo (bear with me here) and then have assign buttons on the rc-600 to change the speed at the right time...or.. spilt it up into different memories. Each song in the Megamix is a different memory and then when you go up or down a memory whilst its playing it will instantly go over to the next memory and that will play at the bpm it is set to. hope that makes sense?

Have you connected the RC-600 to the normal output like a speaker? It won’t play through the mac.. it plays as it normally would. Hope that helps.

Hello! Very helpful videos here. I can't seem to record the midi output (not the audio output) of a pattern I made in my Alesis SR16 drum machine directly into the RC 600. It is hitting the 600 just fine, and I can see the midi signal strength moving, but it won't go into record - just flashes red. Is it possible to transfer midi drum tracks this way or do I have to go the Logic then Converter route? Thank you.

There‘s not enough information here for me to really tell what your goal is. But let‘s assume you want to use the rhythms you created on the Alesis as a basis for a song on the RC. All you‘d have to do is hook up the MIDI out of the RC to the MIDI in of the Alesis and make sure the RC is sending and the Alesis is set to receive MIDI clock signals. Read the f**** manuals on how to do this. Then connect the Audio Out of the Alesis with the Instrument In 1 of the RC. Now you can record the drum track to any RC-track and it will be perfectly synchronized. If you want to have more parts like Intro, Main, Variation, Ending etc., record each pattern to adjoining memories. Use the Ctrl switch to increment or decrement the memory numbers when playing back. That way you can actually re-create whole song structures while performing live or in the studio. It‘s the fastest and most versatile solution in connection with your drum machine - and if you want to use real drums or percussion instruments, too. 😊

From what I can gather, you are trying to get the midi from the Alessia to the RC-600 directly. The RC-600 doesn’t record midi. You need the converter to input it into the looper.

You‘d have to have something to record the drum pattern with the right timing and export it in the accepted format. That wouldn‘t really work in a live situation. And In the studio it‘s a waste of time. 😁

i just want a shaker rhythm for the love of god - no apple loops or boss internal loops that have that that i can see. am i crazy? shouldn't this be the most important? i had to bring in a software drummer, then convert to midi and then import into the r.c. ..... and instead of shakers it sounds like a whistle blowing smh

That means that it’s just playing on the wrong midi note. If you plug the output of the RC-600 out to a speaker then you will be able to hear it as you program it. Hope that helps.. but yeah.. a shaker with a good groove would go a long way. 👍🏻

Maybe.. but if you want something very specific and to get exactly the beat you want. This is something we have never had the flexibility of before in a flagship looper and is just another string to it’s already impressive bow.
