Toy Train Tips And Tricks

I've always liked the NOMA Talking Station and similar accessories for O gauge trains made by Marx, American Fkyer, and Lionel Trains. Now I've discovered a cheap and easy way to add sounds ANYWHERE on my O gauge layout and to make ANY accessory a "talking" accessory!

I know I’m not the only one here but those old phonograph station recordings hit with nostalgia. Those were commonly used in the video series I Love Toy Trains that I enjoyed as a kid. I saw a Noma station at an antique stop a while back, if I return I might just pick it up purely to have. The soundboard ideas and application is super clever!

One thing I just realized is that the Noma station announcements were used in I Love Toy Trains 2.

I just paid a visit to the recording site. All I wanted to do was listen to the clips that were used in the "I Love Toy Trains" series. For a moment, I was a little kid again. Train #66, #28, and #22 are the top ones for me.

I bought one of those Noma stations for ten bucks a while back. The record turntable and other die cast parts had succumbed to metal rot. As the record is screwed to the turntable, it was badly warped and cracked in the middle, but not broken in two. I restored a 1954 AMI jukebox for a local ice cream parlor around the same time. Half the 45s in it were warped to the point the record grab mechanism was "Missing" the records. Using a hair dryer for heat, working slowly and carefully, I was able to get the 45s flat without distorting the grooves and sound. The Noma record was in far worse condition, but over the course of a couple evenings I was able to get it flat. I built a new turntable out of wood, and the mounting screws hold the record together again. It actually plays pretty well now. The old mechanism can be fixed but this took so much work that unless one is a special flavor of crazy (As it is in my case, you got to be nuts to enjoy this work sometimes!) or the original sound has some sentimental value, a digital replica is probably the way to go.

The first thing that popped into my brain after seeing this would be using this board at a concert type scene playing music from your favorite band! The options are limitless!!!

This is a wonderful video! I remember I was tasked with my O gauge Club layout years back with doing this very thing. I was using a board that could have a few dozen sounds files on it and they could be selected manually or play in random order. I had 3 speakers on this project placed at 3 strategic points on the 50x25 layout. 1 was background ambiance noise that would just play at different volumes, simulating a factory. The other speaker I used under the church scene and you could hear people scuffling about and cars passing by. Lastly the 3rd speaker which I sadly wasn't around to hear its installation, was Train crews and dispatch communications, this could also be tied into Broadcastify to play real LIVE radio transmissions on the layout

Excellent ideas! As for 'possible' sounds: Waterfall sounds, farmyard sounds, water pouring out of a pipe for a water tank, forklift sounds inside a warehouse, 'manufacturing' sounds in a factory, lawn mower for a suburban scene, subdued sound of waves for a wharf scene airplane engine, church bell,... ...the limit is your imagination.

What a great video! I just uploaded a video on my channel with a very similar project to yours using a GunRunner John MP3 board from Hennings. It does a very similar job but can play hour long audio tracks that you can switch between using a key fob. It is definitely more pricey but does give you lots of customization. It can also be powered via a dedicated power supply or even track power. Thanks for such an awesome video, keep up the good work!

I'm currently working on soldering my children's names to a perfboard so that when the train goes over a certain section, the LEDs will light up spelling their names. I want their names to be like a billboard, of sorts. If you're interested, I can send a picture or video of the finished product

@ToyTrainTipsAndTricks oh yeah very fun. I've made it in the past but as part of a busy board. Each letter in their name was connected to a light switch. This time, they'll all be connected to a transformer. Gotta figure out how to use dc for the diodes though

Great video, Mike! Where did you get the station recordings? I did not see a reference for them. I plan to use 120 Seconds Recordable Sound Module Recordable Sound Chip Push Button Activated Voice Player for DIY Projects from TEMU. 120 sec seem better for me and just as cheap. Thank You

Could you not record your own sound file and then leave a gap between the first sound and the next sound you want to play and have it just be one big sound file with quiet gaps in between and then you could have 5 or 10 or whatever announcements that would play in sequence

Why not record REAL radio traffic from a scanner and have it play back on the layout somewhere? You could hear track warrants being given by the dispatcher to the train crew for example. You could hear train crews calling signals as they pass them on the railroad.
