This is EXACTLY whay I've needed to find! THANK YOU! I have a cross threaded bolt that I got the old broken bolt out of the aluminum sopt and I have more of the exact bolts that I need to go into it but it's a very unique size and thread from what I've found trying to find the right tap to do this job. So I'll try this very carefully and slowly.

you can also saw down through the length of the bolt with a hacksaw approx 1/2 - 3/4 inch....this will form two halves which will give a little in really bad threads and allow the rest of the bolt/chaser to clear the threads as you progress to the non hack-sawed threads...you can also cut halfway through a nut and create a thread chaser for use on studs and bolts.

I replaced yesterday Rear strut on 2003 Chevy Cavalier and it looks like one mounting bolt got crossed. Exactly how it is shown in this film it can't go further. The bolt is M8-1.25 as well. I think to come from another side to clean the threads in the hole (the bolt is supposed to go upward, and it is crossed, so I'll try to send it from top to bottom). If it won't help I'll try to cut it. Interesting technique shown.

Why didn’t you clean the hole out after you used the homemade tap?

Should have cleared debris in hole after tapping. Carelessness when working with engine block.

The Dremel is a great idea. I made one with a triangular file and that was brutal.
