Alexander Michael Where did you get that information? I’m not trying to sound rude but if that were true, pumping water from the ground would be just as bad. But that’s not the case. Calcium carbonate neutralizes acid. Calcium carbonate doesn’t come out of a scientist lab, it comes from natural sediments found in stone, fossils, limestone etc. this type of system works perfect for balancing the ph levels of the water. We have been using a two large concrete cistern system with essentially the same materials since 1993. Our public health inspector claims our water is cleaner than city water

this is great little over engineered from others i have seen on youtube . but thats awesome cause it cleans the water better . and i agree with you brad but what i would really like to see is this kind of thinking along the river ways that are already dammed up . sure it would cost a little bit and there would be three or four levels of dam walls but the out come would be cleaner water at a very great level . cleaner streams and water ways . humans destroyed our water ways with sewage and toxic waste its up to us to clean up our mess . the only way that will happen is stricter laws against water waste and mass water filtration plants . it would be alot easier then trying to send people to mars for god sake .

I had a aquaculture business in Florida growing salt water LiveRock. Corals,pink coralline algae etc... each rock had over 500 species of life on it. We built reefs out of a100% calcium carbonate rock in the Atlantic Ocean & the Gulf of Mexico. We used a lot of charcoal in our filtration system of about 3,000 gallons. We use to recycle the charcoal by cooking it on cookie sheets in the oven at a preset heat and time. It was then sterile again for reuse. We hardly ever added new charcoal except over time from what spilled or turned to dust. We did this at least a dozen times and never replaced it with new. We kept extra charcoal only to replace very small amount lost charcoal from handling. It never went bad. Don’t remember the temperature or time length of heated oven. But I’m sure you can google it. Hope this may help. Great video, and love & compassion for human life. If everyone that watched this did something to make two other people’s life better, and those two did two more and so on..???? “What a Wonderful World it would be”. Right..??? just saying? We will post up any additional learnings. Pea gravel is pea sized stones. We also removed the mesh from the top of the third tank as there was an accumulation of algae there. Probably caused by some organic matter (grass) in the charcoal. We scooped out any charcoal that floated

Frank Smith if you watched the video properly, Professor John Kern developed this “primitive” system for his graduate thesis. He spent years testing it in various labs including Bangkok and Colorado. He essentially developed and improved this system in university. He needed post “college” education to do this properly and efficiently. To make your charcoal change easier, you could use the screen netting to make bags to hold the charcoal. When it comes time to change the charcoal, just take the bags out, empty them and refill with fresh char, and put them back in tank 3.

This is really great! Love the idea of proper natural water filtration. Moving away from buying plastic bottled waters and I feel MUCH better then tap water.. I don’t believe we are meant to be drinking unnatural tap water with chemicals like Chlorine and fluoride and any other unknown chemicals the government puts in tap water. But one thing I really don’t like… (but toldally understand why it’s used and how difficult it would be with out it) is… PLASTIC… I hate the use of so much plastic.. Plastic barrels, pipe fittings, gaskets etc. I am trying to move away completely from using plastics to drinking water. As of right now I am Bottling my own drinking water from a local spring I know here in Northern California In only glass bottles and jugs no plastics. my personal favorite of use is vintage freshly Cleaned glass jugs and bottles that I ether found out on my adventures or was given. I use corks aswell no plastic tops or anything.

Of all plastics High density poly ethylene is quite stable and that's what drums and water tanks are often made of. It is heating plastics that releases toxicities. Your concern of exposure to HDPE plastics I feel is unwarranted but each to there own.

I've Seen dozens and dozens of diy water filter videos over the years. And this is probably the first one I've seen that recommended washing and cleaning the sand/gravel before placing in the filter. (Though, admittedly, many will just put the materials in a container of their choice and flush water through until it's clear anyways). I prefer this hands on assurance. Great vid!

Love the design, and the step by step assembly of the system. My only reservation for this setup was the centre tube for free movement of the set floated valve. It felt like an unintended bypass for the water which could reduce the filters effectiveness (Though I guess the reduced effectiveness would be minimal). I saw your concrete design which did address this issue with a separate float area from the filter. Maybe a larger diameter pipe for the float to sit inside and the top of the pipe could reach above the water line to simulate it's concrete counterparts method. Other than that I want to make one. Can just see my wife rolling her eye's at me.

I came across this video by chance while shopping for a water filtration system as an end-user. Although it is not my domain, I couldn't but be touched by how simple techniques (vs. advanced technologies) can be put for the service of humanity - here in rural/remote areas. your way is the same as my parents' era. we used charcoal, sand, palm fiber, gravel or pumice stone. this method is used from generation to generation in Indonesia in areas with poor water quality. now rarely use it. water availability is better than before.

This is what I followed. My water source had too much dissolved materials which when came in contact with air after 1st tank became brown. It settled as a layer over sand filter tank clogging it quickly. I improvised the original design by introducing airator to the pumpset output (input to tank with float valve is airated) and adding a second tank between the tank with float valve and sand filter tank. This new tank has a bottom water intake and top outlet. New tank should have a valve for drainage at the bottom like that of the tank with float valve. It contains bottom layer of pebbles to a level that covers the inlet and drain, next metal chips almost 1' to 1.5', followed by sand. Each layer separated by green net. I now just have to open the drainage valves of the first two tanks at regular intervals to avoid clogging.

hi.It would be very helpful if you say whats your tank size and motor speed? your tank get full in how many minutes? I'm thinking about making the same thing for my home cause Iron remove plant is so costly in my country. And my tank is 1000 litres which get full by 30 minutes { and i need 4 tank each day} so would this types of container can bear the water speed, like won't spill out!

@Sheep dog .. You said exactly what I was thinking... Clay-->good. Plastic-->problem. Such big containers could be difficult in clay. Maybe stainless steel would be better. I attended a talk years ago with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. She mentioned that (at that time) there were ca. 80,000 kinds of patented material coming from petroleum. 4,000 of them had been tested and found to produce carcinogenic substances. I do not trust plastic water containers at all.

@@Suthrngal We used clay pots because they were abundant and easy to manufacture in Cambodia in 1993. The pots also held quite a bit more water than these plastic drums. They were huge. Back then there was no push for the reduction in petroleum-based products like there s today. That in itself makes them superior would you not agree.

Simple and clean approach and a precise to the point video. Superb! This should become common practise, people use RO water without realising its actually harmful, it brings down TDS to extremely low level and is slightly acidic, both not a good thing, use rain water with these kinds of filters or just use build rainwater after collecting it in an underground tank (u can use a similar filter system like in the video) and boil and drink it, voila!!
