I realize this is a pretty specialized project that most of you won't ever build, but it is a very useful project for someone you know who knits.

I'm seeing this 12 years after you posted and wanted to say Thank You! I'm now hoping to make one as Soon as possible.

You da man. Before seeing your clip I was in no danger of spending 30-60$ on a fragile MITW (made in third world) or MISS (made in sweat shop) swift. Now even a semi talented wood worker like myself can make this do dad. And I no longer need shy away from buying hanks of yarn! Thank you!

I am seeing this years after you posted it, but I want to thank you. My husband rarely suggests yarn projects for me, but he spotted a pattern he liked as well as some yarn and now I have several hanks that need winding. I usually borrow from a friend, but now I am off to the shop to make a swift that is better than her commercially-made one. Thank you!

Thank you. I am a weaver & seldom need a swift. Your plan will help me make one from scraps. Clever!

Nice project. One thought for the dowel storage is to drill 4 holes through all 4 boards while in storage mode and that will keep the 2 halves from swiveling and easier to carry.

you learn something new every day. I know a woman who runs a yarn shop here in town and she never mentioned a swift. She had knitty noddys and spinning wheels and even made her own alpaca yarn from her own alpackas but she never mentiioned a swift. There is more to knitting than meets the eye

I had to do some modifications. I went to 3 major hardware stores and couldn't find the coupling. Showed them you video to no avail. So mine is not as pretty but it works and saved me the $50 bucks!

Suggestion for you I did this for the wife and the first thing out of her mouth was where do I store the dowels? So back out to the garage and I drilled 4 holes in the ends of the base pieces 2 on each end. I only drilled them 3 inches so they stick out a bit. she was happy with that.

it would be cool if you routed out a little spot in the base for the dowels to go, so that when you fold it up the other part of the base would act as the lid

*applaud* I love it! I don't knit because I'm a man .... actually no, I've tried and I just suck at it. It's a skill I wish I had, but my fingers don't want to work that way, I am envious of anyone who can take some string (yarn) and turn it into comfortable and beautiful clothing!

oh, the hose coupling is brilliant! i kludged up a yarn swift myself that consists of a weighted cardboard box with wooden pieces with dowels on top, which i can hang from the ceiling (since i don't have table or counter space), but the swivel clip (from a dog leash) i am using for it to rotate doesn't work as well as it should because it's not centred. the coupling will solve that problem for me. thanks!

I had to check this out first. You called the unballed yarn a Shank. I've always heard them called Skeins but they're also called Hanks. I think a "shank" is a prison knitting needle... There is a wooden doohicky that weavers use to take the newly spun yarn off the spinning wheel and roll it into what they turn into a hank. I think someone else mentioned it, a niddy noddy. They're really easy to make but useless to anyone other than a spinner or someone with a 55 gallon drum full of yarn...

I just made this'd as someone posted I could not find the coupler either. And the two 24" boards one needs to be 22" to swivel. I bought two hose splices and epoxied them together to make the coupler.

Can anyone out there tell me where I can find that plumbing piece? I've searched and searched for "garden hose coupling" but I haven't found a single thing that looks like the piece in the video. And everything close is $20, which seems like way too much. Is there a better search term I could be using?
