The little toggle under the hammer (the Hammer Strut) is the cause of most hassles when reassembling a Mark Series pistol.
This simple little plate, called a Hammer Strut Support, will prevent the Hammer Strut from getting hung up during reassembly. It is very easy to install and worth every penny.
Whether or not you choose to install this part - check out our video on a procedure that makes this gun much easier to reassemble:

I have 2 Mark II. A 10" stainless my dad bought new in 1986, and I just picked up a 10" blued made in 94/95 about a week ago. It took me about 15 times to get it right!! Now that I know the process, and yes it is a PROCESS!! I can now take it apart, and re-assemble with ease. My personal best time is 28.93 seconds. Flip the gun upside down and pull the triger, it will fall into place. If the main spring goes in without a little resistance and falls right in, stop and try again, you missed it. Oh, and they're both absolut tack drivers!! Thanks for the video!

Gets easy once you know how it works. Can be hell if you don't know and haven't done it before. I bet this mod makes it a lot easier for new people... but it's still a process (esp with the newer one's with the magazine disconnect).

Just got mine today. I had left my 1976 bicentennial model (says "Made in the 200th year of American Liberty" on top of the receiver) disassembled three or four years ago. Dropped this in and other than remembering when to pull the trigger, it was a snap. Took it outside and fired five rounds with no problem. A product that actually does what it is supposed to do. Hat is off to you guys.

When I bought my first Mark Series gun I had this problem of reassembling the firearm in fact it took me all of 3 days of trying to put this gun back together. Then I figured out that gravity is your best friend in fixing this problem. I just held the gun over my head and jiggled the gun a little and bingo that part just fell in right where it is supposed to be. I now can reassemble the firearm in less than a minute every time.

I broke mine down to clean it, and did the same thing. I was very frustrated at first, because i attempted to put it beck together for about an hour. On a side note, i don't think the previous owner(s) broke it down to clean it. There was straight up carbon mud in the thing. I was amazed at how smooth it operated after cleaning. My dad bought it used in the 80s, then gave it to me about 20 years ago. Wow, time flies...

The best video on the HSS (hammer strut support) install! Showing you with the flashlight how to do it and what the toggle will look like and where the toggle needs to go into and how to push the pin out and how far. Do not go past the spring! Some other videos do not show exactly what you need to see! Best video!

Ordering that piece now. I used your previous videos as a guide to field strip and reassemble my MK II. While I am now fairly good at the process thanks to you, whoever inherits this fine shooter will not have to bang their head against the bench nearly as often as I when putting it back in service. These great little guns need frequent cleaning after eating the cheap Remington diet that the new shooters I indoctrinate cycle through it. The confidence that tearing out the 10 ring at 25’ delivers to a first timer instills is a thing of beauty. I can tear down my SR1911 and reassemble it in minutes but Ruger did us no favors in their design of the Marks from a maintenance perspective. Thanks again for providing your time and intelligence.

Mark 2 miserable to take apart 20 years ago for the first time in my garage. However, after several attempts/months and a phone call to Ruger, I finally go it and now the mark II and 22/45 are very doable. However, I assumed the Mark III was the same. Wrong. It did not go back together the same way. Most of the video's on Mark III's have poor lighting. Tough to see the critical spots. It would be nice to see a video on the Mark III with "Good" lighting. As for your video on the Mark II, very good.

I ordered and received the hammer strut support this week. I installed it by following your video. The piece went in easily but I was not able to fully reassemble my MK II. When I reached the point of securing the pointy lever on the mainspring assembly, it seemed like I was about a few mm’s short of the assembly clearing the bottom of the slot where it slides in. I was able to reassemble the pistol without issue after I removed the strut support. Now it could have been my own error related to the position of the strut during the final reassembly stage but I tried every angle combined with applying magic slaps without success. I’m going to try again this weekend and see if I can work it out.

I never understood the issue people have with putting their Ruger back together. I have the Mark III...I put it together wrong one time because I forgot to hold the barrel up at about a 45 degree angle. The gun needs to be held at the correct angle when assembling and once you know that it is very simple to do. Never ever point the gun down when assembling or the hammer strut will not seat correctly.

@HammerStriker
@HammerStriker 4 жыл бұрын
I don't actually make this part, there is a small veteran owned company that does. I suspect there will not be one for the 22/45 since they are designed differently. They lack the cross-pin that this relies on to center itself and stay in place. We do have a video where I reassemble an older Mark series in 16 seconds then show you how to do it step by step. That process does work with the 22/45, though unless you have removed the magazine disconnect you may need to insert an empty mag for any step involving use of the trigger.

@HammerStriker
@HammerStriker 5 жыл бұрын
The barrel length itself won't matter but there are some accessories that don't work on the Target or the 22/45 or certain generations. The adjustable trigger may, as you suspect, be a potential issue depending upon how they did that. I don't have one to check, but I would imagine if you contact them they will be able to tell you if their part works on it. (Generation and model will be important).

The mark-series remained a major PIA until the mark-iv was manufactured. A pox on Ruger for designing them the way they did. Then, with increasing competition from other .22 handgun manufacturers they finally got off of their asses and made the mark-iv THE WAY THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE THEM ALL IN THE FIRST PLACE.
