If you live in an RV full-time, are a snowbird, sunbird, or just RV as a weekend getaways, you probably rely on your freshwater tank for clean, potable water. The problem is, there might be stuff growing in there. RV tanks are dark and hot, and bacteria naturally grows inside. Your freshwater RV tank should be disinfected at least twice a year. It sounds like a big job, but it doesn't have to be!
Here's my hack for an EASY WAY to disinfect your freshwater tank.

My rig is over 30 years old. I am afraid of using bleach because the fittings are already old. I use 4 bottles of hydrogen peroxide instead. Same disinfecting properties, no smell, no danger of destroying my fittings and not the end of the world if it does not all get flushed out . And cheap!

I was taught to never put bleach into a septic system, which is what most RV parks have. So if you dump the bleach water down the sewer system at a park you may be killing the septic system bacteria needed to break down the solid material. Better to drain when on gravel or driving down the road, which also allows the bleach water to splash around in your tank. Use a quarter cup of baking soda in the first tank to sweeten the tank.

Most RV parks, not all, have laundry facilities and unless they have a different system for those, bleach is already going into whatever system they have.

I am glad you addressed this! This is something that I think about in the back of my mind; water that sits in any container for any length of time just seems prone to be icky to me. Just think of a dog bowl when a person just adds water to it over & over for several days. When you empty the bowl out, there is a layer of slimy stuff on it. I try to clean my dog's water bowl every 2 or 3 days at least. But it makes me think water tanks & rain water containment system's containers etc. must get slimy too. Ick. Thanks again!

I think the slime comes from the dog's saliva. I have water in a Brita pitcher that sits on my counter for weeks and it doesn't get slimy.

Well the dog is quite a contaminant, but that is not entering our water system😝 we have to change our dog's water twice a day! She is very furry! And if we have oatmeal, without giving her some, she pouts all day! But boy, what a mess in her little furry face! She must have a good wash! Anyhow, with the system being so enclosed, the muck comes from air, hoses, and the water itself, then you have warmth, and different organisms that could thrive, which is why it is a good idea to add a little bleach, per CDC guidelines, to the water to discourage this. Then filter it with whatever you choose. I have a filter that eliminates lead, pesticides, etc since these are common here. Our area is not big on following regulations, so i always filter. We have had a lot of mines and still have huge contamination issues. I love Robin's idea of the tablets. I have ruined so many things accidentally with bleach leaks and splashes i did not even realize had happened until, too late! Robin has changed my life!

The first time I did this, I was afraid of doing it wrong, but it is actually pretty easy; I did drive around for about 1/2 hour and then let mine sit. Flushing out the bleach wasn’t bad either. I also have a Berkey , I got it from Berkey in the scratch and dent section, it’s 1 size up from the travel size, but it was cheaper, so I went for the bargain 😊

Robin, perfect timing. I'm going to pick up my RV tomorrow morning and was planning on putting baking soda in my tank (which someone told me to use). You do not risk damaging your seals. Now, I do not know if this will work or how baking soda cleans your tank, but I thought, it really couldn't hurt to try it. And the Berkey - at first, I was reluctant to get one simply because of the price. I finally broke down and got one. OMG, it is the best. Well worth the cost and since the filters will last for 8000 gallons, means replacing them, will not be an issue. Thank you, Robin, you have been a wonderful source of information for me, a great inspiration, and mentor (if you don't mind me saying). I really hope to get the chance to actually meet in person out there on the road. Best wishes.

Berkey is illegal to sell in some states and they never even bothered to get tested through NSF ... so I find that very questionable .. I also think that everyone just buys those things because they see everyone on KZbin buy one and this is most likely why Berkey never bothered to get their systems tested and approved ..that company knows it riding the wave of the latest FAD . used to be us travelers didn't just play the monkey see ,monkey do game ..but times have obviously changed here.

A couple of sincere questions from a newbie... 1. Why dump fresh water tank before filling up with treated bleach water? Why not just add bleach first to already exiting water in tank, and then proceed with next steps? 2. Why not use a more organic nature friendly method instead of using bleach, if you're dumping water while driving method? Thanks for helping me understand. Love!

Sure would seem practical to add bleach to the existing water then top off the water let it mix up then drain some though to the lines and hold for a while then wash your vehicle. But hey I don't know I'm just thinking. And bleach does disabate but I don't know how long it takes either. Now we are getting into some science.

@@sa-iw4dr, thanks for replying & trying to help me figure it out. I've been digging around for answers for a while but still don't even know if there are better approaches to sanitizing the fresh water tank...including all those more natural methods. Seems nothing does the job better than bleach. But It really sure seems like adding it before the initial dump would be a smarter not harder job. I don't really know. I think another concern is the H2o line that goes to the ice maker in the residential fridge....bleach or vinegar cubes? lol

Hi Robin my wife and i love your videos and the new way of adding bleach to your fresh water tank. We have the exact same rv as you and I just have two corrections. The red and blue valves are actually the "low point drains" for the hot and cold lines. To drain the fresh water tank there is a valve handle just in front of the drivers side rear leveling jack. It is easier to access when the rear sldes are in. Pull it out and it will drain with some force if you are 2/3 full.
@LouCetrangelo
@LouCetrangelo 4 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify the reason your fres water tank shows 2/3 full when you though you dumped it all out is because it really is 2/3 full. When you pull the white fresh water drain handle and let the tank empty i guarantee the gauge will show as empty. Again we love your videos but it would not be good to have old water in there for long periods of time when you are thinking it is empty. One other importent tip is to bypass the heater when using any kind of bleach. Its the bottom red handle on the Nautilus panel. Move it horizontal and it will be bypassed. After you drain the bleach move it back vertical. Happy camping Lou & Diane

I highly recommend the Berkey. My husband and I have 2. A gallon size one in the travel trailer and a 2 gallon in our home. We have had our first one for 5 years. They make filters for what we call "city water" and filters for "well water". Lots of people think that Berkey's are expensive but when you consider how much bad stuff is being put into your drinking water it's not that expensive. Also if you buy lots of bottled water or gallon jugs of drinking water the Berkey pays for itself. We have to carry our water with us now that we been filtering for so long because we can taste the chemicals in water wherever we go if we don't take ours. Best investment yet!!

@ceciliapetrowsky2572

Ramona Benson First, you should definitely know where the water heater is. Just turn off the switch on your panel although it probably doesn’t make much difference because you won’t be using any water for several hours. When you put the bleach in, it has to be in there at least several hours. Turn on all faucets after putting in bleach you should be able to smell it. You want to get the lines cleaned too. After you’re done, run the water from all faucets until you don’t smell bleach. Good luck.

Question, have you thought about putting a whole system water filtration system that all your water goes through once it leaves the tank? It just seems safer to me. Because, if you are only cleaning your tank every 6 mos. that is not that often and stuff can grow fast. You will still probably need to clean your tank, but I want even my shower water to not have toxins in it that will be absorbed through my skin. I know Less Junk, More Journey installed on into their Airstream (they don't have it anymore) and then also a under the counter drinking filter on top of the whole house one. Just curious?

Here is a far, far simpler hack to keep your tanks and pipes pristine: Step 1. Fill up with town water That's it! Town water is normally chlorinated to kill those microrganisms. The chlorine does eventially leach out when exposed to air. So you do need to turn the water over. But if it's been sitting there and you're concerned, then simply empty the tanks and refill with that fresh, chlorinated town water.

We were having trouble with our sensors and our son stressed the importance of keeping them clean. After the cleaning they worked great. I was so worried that it was going to cost a lot of money to get them fixed.

I’m told you’re supposed to use one and 3/4 cup bleach for 100 gallons of freshwater tank also there must be a more natural way like hydrogen peroxide or some thing. Do you know if something that’s not so toxic thank you for all of your great videos.

The people who have 5 gal water and gray water bottles under the sink should do the same thing. Plastic being porous you'd be amazed what can grow in them.

Love this tip!! It will be so much easier than using the liquid bleach. Thank you!! P.S. Amazon has the same brand you showed - 2 bottles of 32 count for $5.94, available for delivery by Oct. 13.

Thank you for this video, I am hoping to get back on the road soon and the reminder was a good one. I might try the tablet idea as well, frankly it's the only time I use bleach, don't like the chemicals. Keep up your terrific videos, it is appreciated. Take care JKH.

if you need 1/4 cup per 16 gallons, or 1cup equals 64 gals, how did you come up with 3 cups for 100 gallons,?

My regular water system (city hook up) is spitting a light green hue out. I didn't. Notice till my hands and skin got a little itchy. Stupid water.

You have a 100 gallon fresh water tank and 16gallons per 1/4 cup of liquid bleach. My calculations are a little over 1and 1/2 cups of liquid bleach for 100 gallons of fresh water. You said 3 cups of liquid bleach or 4 tablets. Seems like the math is not adding up to me.

Everywhere i've read you want 1/4 cup per 16g and if you have a 100g tank that's 1.5 cups not 3 cups, and then you put 4 tablets in? Is that because you only let it sit for 3hr instead of the recommended 12? 100/16=6.25. 6.25/0.25 = 1.56 cups
