I was taught to never put bleach into a septic system, which is what most RV parks have. So if you dump the bleach water down the sewer system at a park you may be killing the septic system bacteria needed to break down the solid material. Better to drain when on gravel or driving down the road, which also allows the bleach water to splash around in your tank. Use a quarter cup of baking soda in the first tank to sweeten the tank.
@lindathompson67534 жыл бұрын
Most RV parks, not all, have laundry facilities and unless they have a different system for those, bleach is already going into whatever system they have.

I am glad you addressed this! This is something that I think about in the back of my mind; water that sits in any container for any length of time just seems prone to be icky to me. Just think of a dog bowl when a person just adds water to it over & over for several days. When you empty the bowl out, there is a layer of slimy stuff on it. I try to clean my dog's water bowl every 2 or 3 days at least. But it makes me think water tanks & rain water containment system's containers etc. must get slimy too. Ick. Thanks again!
@MamaBaer544 жыл бұрын
I think the slime comes from the dog's saliva. I have water in a Brita pitcher that sits on my counter for weeks and it doesn't get slimy.
@TheLakingc4 жыл бұрын
Well the dog is quite a contaminant, but that is not entering our water system😝 we have to change our dog's water twice a day! She is very furry! And if we have oatmeal, without giving her some, she pouts all day! But boy, what a mess in her little furry face! She must have a good wash! Anyhow, with the system being so enclosed, the muck comes from air, hoses, and the water itself, then you have warmth, and different organisms that could thrive, which is why it is a good idea to add a little bleach, per CDC guidelines, to the water to discourage this. Then filter it with whatever you choose. I have a filter that eliminates lead, pesticides, etc since these are common here. Our area is not big on following regulations, so i always filter. We have had a lot of mines and still have huge contamination issues. I love Robin's idea of the tablets. I have ruined so many things accidentally with bleach leaks and splashes i did not even realize had happened until, too late! Robin has changed my life!
@jonisjourneys36844 жыл бұрын
The first time I did this, I was afraid of doing it wrong, but it is actually pretty easy; I did drive around for about 1/2 hour and then let mine sit. Flushing out the bleach wasn’t bad either. I also have a Berkey , I got it from Berkey in the scratch and dent section, it’s 1 size up from the travel size, but it was cheaper, so I went for the bargain 😊

I love how informative your videos are! I've been living in my TT for two years full-time. I learned to do this technique and then repeat it with a mixture of vinegar. It neutralizes the chlorine and removes the smell. No need to let it sit just run the vinegar-water mixture through the system.

Mixing vinegar and chlorine create poisonous gas. I would make sure the chlorine is rinsed out really good before adding any vinegar.

Robin, perfect timing. I'm going to pick up my RV tomorrow morning and was planning on putting baking soda in my tank (which someone told me to use). You do not risk damaging your seals. Now, I do not know if this will work or how baking soda cleans your tank, but I thought, it really couldn't hurt to try it. And the Berkey - at first, I was reluctant to get one simply because of the price. I finally broke down and got one. OMG, it is the best. Well worth the cost and since the filters will last for 8000 gallons, means replacing them, will not be an issue. Thank you, Robin, you have been a wonderful source of information for me, a great inspiration, and mentor (if you don't mind me saying). I really hope to get the chance to actually meet in person out there on the road. Best wishes.

Hi Robin my wife and i love your videos and the new way of adding bleach to your fresh water tank. We have the exact same rv as you and I just have two corrections. The red and blue valves are actually the "low point drains" for the hot and cold lines. To drain the fresh water tank there is a valve handle just in front of the drivers side rear leveling jack. It is easier to access when the rear sldes are in. Pull it out and it will drain with some force if you are 2/3 full.
@LouCetrangelo4 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify the reason your fres water tank shows 2/3 full when you though you dumped it all out is because it really is 2/3 full. When you pull the white fresh water drain handle and let the tank empty i guarantee the gauge will show as empty. Again we love your videos but it would not be good to have old water in there for long periods of time when you are thinking it is empty. One other importent tip is to bypass the heater when using any kind of bleach. Its the bottom red handle on the Nautilus panel. Move it horizontal and it will be bypassed. After you drain the bleach move it back vertical. Happy camping Lou & Diane

Thank you for the presentation. The Berkey is classified as a water PURIFICATION system as opposed to a simple filter (like Brita, Pur or Zero). A clean water source is the best investment for your health and their travel size is convenient for most RVers.

Berkey is illegal to sell in some states and they never even bothered to get tested through NSF ... so I find that very questionable .. I also think that everyone just buys those things because they see everyone on KZbin buy one and this is most likely why Berkey never bothered to get their systems tested and approved ..that company knows it riding the wave of the latest FAD . used to be us travelers didn't just play the monkey see ,monkey do game ..but times have obviously changed here.

Great video. One added step is to do the same step with vinegar. It removes calcium deposits in the water system, especially in the ice maker and it kills waterborne bacteria. I highly recommend the Berkey. My husband and I have 2. A gallon size one in the travel trailer and a 2 gallon in our home. We have had our first one for 5 years. They make filters for what we call "city water" and filters for "well water". Lots of people think that Berkey's are expensive but when you consider how much bad stuff is being put into your drinking water it's not that expensive. Also if you buy lots of bottled water or gallon jugs of drinking water the Berkey pays for itself. We have to carry our water with us now that we been filtering for so long because we can taste the chemicals in water wherever we go if we don't take ours. Best investment yet!!

Question, have you thought about putting a whole system water filtration system that all your water goes through once it leaves the tank? It just seems safer to me. Because, if you are only cleaning your tank every 6 mos. that is not that often and stuff can grow fast. You will still probably need to clean your tank, but I want even my shower water to not have toxins in it that will be absorbed through my skin. I know Less Junk, More Journey installed on into their Airstream (they don't have it anymore) and then also a under the counter drinking filter on top of the whole house one. Just curious?

@ceciliapetrowsky25724 жыл бұрын
Ramona Benson First, you should definitely know where the water heater is. Just turn off the switch on your panel although it probably doesn’t make much difference because you won’t be using any water for several hours. When you put the bleach in, it has to be in there at least several hours. Turn on all faucets after putting in bleach you should be able to smell it. You want to get the lines cleaned too. After you’re done, run the water from all faucets until you don’t smell bleach. Good luck.

Hi Robin. Great information. concise, and it's good to know that you can get these bleach tablets at Walmart. My situation is a little different than your situation so I wanted to run it by you. So I am boondocking but I do have access to a hose and a spigot to fill my tank with. If I fill my tank and put in the proper amount of crushed tablets and let it sit for a few hours then can I drain it and refill it drain it again and refill it. Is that the same thing that you're doing at the RV park you are at? I'm a little slow on the uptake. I know that I definitely need to disinfect my water tank and run it through all my faucets. I never think about it because I only do my dishes with it and I only do my shower with my tank water. my drinking and cooking water is purified so I didn't think it was a big deal. but I'm sure there's a ton of bacteria in there and a bunch of other gross things. Thank you Robin you always have the best tips.
