I think "drone" is the English term you were looking for. It describes the strings that aren't fretted, or especially strings that aren't even played directly on some other instruments. "Drone" also happens to be a specific type of bee. Among honey bees, at least, drones are the relatively rare male bees whose only purpose is to mate.

Drone is also the term for the constant harmonic effect that you hear in the background of traditional Indian music, played with tampura. The bourdon effect achieves the function similarly.

In Whitesnake's "Kittens Got Claws" song, what does "with your G-string tuned to A" mean? Given that it is a Whitesnake tune, one would make the assumption that it is a play on “G-string” as the standard pitch of one of the 6 guitar strings and the type of ladies underwear. One would have to tune the string up to the pitch of A by tightening it
