The Daiquiri is how I test my new rums, since there isnt much to cover the rum notes. And it's so simple and easy, and delicious in the summer.
@ultimatemaitaiАй бұрын
Back in the 1990s there were sooo many terrible Planters Punches that were overly heavy on OJ and even pineapple juice. The version you're doing especially with Jamaica rum is the way to go. Agree also that the El Presidente is really underrated. The Jet Pilot is a great choice, though it is best served with a flame in a spent lime shell. Great choices overall for these cocktails. I can't tell you how many times I asked for a "shaken lime daiquiri" and get told "we don't have a blender." Oy vey.

I discovered this version of the daiquiri on my honeymoon and fell in love with it. I'm a massive rum and lime fan so to discover this was like finding my perfect cocktail. Love that you highlighted it here as I don't see a lot of people talking about it.

I was helping my girlfriend explore different rums and used a nice small daquiri for each one (it was a very fun night with 14 of my favorite bottles getting showcased). It helps get a general taste of rums without having to choke through the complexity of tasting neat alcohol.

More and more, I've seen the jungle bird show up in non-tiki cocktail bars, so maybe it's getting it's due. But it is one of my favorite drinks period and I would love to be able to order it anytime I am in the mood, especially since it does not require any non-standard ingredients. Also so many great possibilities for tweaking it with different rums and flavors (coffee for instance)

Great video. I would add the Palmetto. Underrecognized and understated. Most service staff look at you with a puzzled look when I try yo order one. I finally found a bar that made the best one I've ever had. This one had ratios not true to the recipe. It was made with 3 of Plateray dark, 1/2 sweet vermouth, 3 dashes orange bitters.
@Default78334Ай бұрын
I don't make hurricanes often, but when I do, I like adding a barspoon or two of the syrup from a jar of Luxardo cherries (or other similar high-end cocktail cherries). A little extra sweetness helps round the edges off the tartness and the cherry syrup adds a little of that red fruit/Hawaiian Punch note from more modern formulations.

Presidente - featured on Boardwalk Empire many moons ago, at the time Pierre Ferrand was re-working the recipe for Dry Curacao as it would have tasted over a century ago. Planter's Punch - when I switched to "craft" in 2007, my majority of patron clientle were already in their upper 70s. This, along with many "classics" was educated down to me by those who lived in the era of popularity. My Godmother was bartending in Miami in the 1960-1980s, the Zombie & Hurricane she has replicated what I use behind the bar. Different/available ingredients from this video but not far off. And she wants to say she hates the 'tapioca pearl' ice. Daiquiri is perfection for all rum drinks.

I really want to make that Hurricane, but unsure of what rum to use, since I'd want to approximate your infinity blend somewhat closely... I guess it's time for some "science."

I think the opposite direction, flavored and frozen daiquiris are severely underrated by the craft cocktail scene - would recommend anything from Manolito in NOLA, they do a strawberry daiquiri with fresh strawberries and st Germain as an accent. I would also recommend Nico de Soto's Pineapple Daiquiri. I also think Guayaba Daiquiris are severely unknown - especially with a dash of absinthe to round it out. Manolito swamp water is also amazing similar story to a hurricane where it turned into green sweet thing instead of herbal and rummy. Frozen Painkiller, so easy to turn from eh to out of this world. Similar as daquari known just not that quality. Royal Hawaiian Gin + Rum mix comes out amazing

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to follow those Jet Pilot specs exactly. Something in the alchemy of that drink MESSES ME UP if I don’t get the rum types exactly bang on. It doesn’t even have that much alcohol compared to other tiki drinks.

I used Appleton Signature as I don't have any Puerto Rican rums, Blackwell for dark Jamaica rum and OFTD for the overproof Demerara. (Pusser's 151 would overpower everything). Haven't tried the original, but this is not bad. Pretty boozy, but fruity and chocolaty and mokka notes from the Blackwell

The Presidente is the rum cocktail that I always THINK I will like based on the recipe, but then it feels like it's really flabby to me with no acid. Which would be so easy to change, but it also wouldn't be the Presidente any more if you randomly added citrus. So I don't know what to do about it.
