Interesting... I've never seen keto wrapped around the root ball like that. I can see where it would help retain some of the moisture for less frequent watering. I've used it around a planting and to place stones, but not on the root ball. I might experiment some with this method of group planting. Nice trees.

The Keto is more a peat then a clay, it from the bottom of paddy fields. It does hold more water then the bonsai soil would but since its on a slab that is what we need else we would be constantly watering. The Keto is used for stability and also for its other properties too, water retention, rich in nutrients, all of which the larch happen to love so we tended to use more then we would normally in this planting :)

You have made the project difficult for yourself, you have overdone your keto balls. Your finished overall effect could have looked better trimmed, and more moss added with fine gravel or Akadama to show more depth to the forest floor. I have never seen a larch forest done the way, but I suppose everyone has their own methods.
