Glue is incredibly useful for a lot of different projects, but what did they use back before modern glue? In this series, I explain how adhesives were made in ancient times and find out which one works best.
In the third episode of this series, I make casein (milk paste) glue. How well does it work? Which one is best? Find out in video five of this #howtomakeeverything #shorts series!

Its wild that the whole "kids eating glue" thing started with glue being made out of food, and then glue stopped being made of food but kids just kept eating it.
@ShevaSmash
@ShevaSmash Жыл бұрын
Guess kids weren't as dumb as people assumed lol. The kids that ate the "foodglue" had some sixth sense pointing them towards food that no one else knew about. The kids that continued eating it once it was no longer food? Well... that kinda explains the downfall of our society, doesn't it? Common sense quickly became not so common, and all that.

@@iteerrex8166 Because it connotes using cow meat to make glue. But also that somehow glue made from cow bones is superior to other primitive bone glues. The fact that it's nothing at all like either of those makes it funny. I personally thought the first seeing the title, then the second thinking about it more before watching. I never knew you could use milk curds to create glue!

This makes so much sense! I figured the cow image referred to a carcass rendering process (like the idea of sending a horse to ‘the glue factory’). It never occurred to me it was a more friendly option. ‘Eating glue’ was probably better then… for a couple emergency calories anyway lol

Glues are a great way to learn about chemistry and how things are held together in nature. If you ever wondered about the mechanism, the answer teaches you about molecular bonds.
@frankpower97

You could have used milk of lime (aka calcium hydroxide in water) as an alkali it makes the glue more resistant, after drying the free calcium hydroxide converts into calcium carbonate changing the ph and solubility making the glue more permanent and forming a matrix with the casein. It was used on some models of a ww2 wooden aircraft de Havilland mosquito to bond the veneer inside the plywood that composed the frame of the plane

Pitch and or straight tar is likely the best as they're water resistant where much of these glues are only good if the material and glue itself remains dry. Both tar and pitch are very handy for torches and fire accellerants and for aiding in building fires quickly. Also great for bindings like fastening arrow points and spear tips to their shafts.
