This has made me way more optimistic to have a silkworm colony in the future! They're a fantastic feeder insect for reptiles, but can be a bit expensive. I'd love to have a perpetual colony to provide food, and the silk (and beauty! They're very adorable insects!) would be a very nice bonus.
@tinac80459 жыл бұрын
It really breaks your heart to end up killing those worms, that you cared for. There is a way to remove the worms from the cocoons so they can mature and mate. The fiber will be intact, you just need to carefully find the hole and gently remove the worm, while still little. Another way is to have the silk worm spit the silk out somewhere else, so they will transform outside the silk. My mom use to have them as pets, and she showed me with a few when I was young. They are wonderful pets, even though they eat a lot of everything. Btw, that is not enough worms. A thousand worms can make small handkerchief.
@stynium9 жыл бұрын
Wow, you had them as pets. Cool.
@HidekiShinichi8 жыл бұрын
McZidanne those moths may not have it but loooots of moth species do have mouth and I feed em sometimes.
@BM-yy8db7 жыл бұрын
So how do you get them to spit the silk somewhere else?
@Mo_Kit48696 жыл бұрын
Ya it's better to kill them before they suffer from starvation and die
@midnight83416 жыл бұрын
@@Mo_Kit4869 well, that's their natural live cycle... Their main form is the larval stage. Also, insects are considered to be unable to suffer, as insects with clipped lower bodies or genitals (the very last part of the body, often happening with 7-year cicadas in the US, as birds will feast on them until their tired of it and then just eat the best parts, which seems to be lower body), they will still behave like nothing's happened, eating with no organs left to digest the food and try to mate without having genitals left. So, yes, while they can feel the stimulus "pain", there is no response triggered in them. That's like loosing a limb just to go on after ten minutes without even realising that there is a huge bleeding wound on your body that will kill you eventually. Have you seen that one zombie woman in the first episode of The Walking Dead? The one in the park, cut in half, dragging herself by the finger tips while loosing her colons in the grass? Yeah, essentially all insects behave like that. They feel a temporary pain and then that's it...

I sort of feel it's not so cruel now I know that silk moths are flightless and essentially starve to death. It almost seems like euthanasia to kill them after the fun part of their life is over...
@sharongallego48498 жыл бұрын
Did you not hear that they are this way because of our domestication of them? If we never used them to make silk they wouldn't be so deformed. Silk is made from animal cruelty.

No I didn't - ugh we are disgusting! But then I suppose you only have to look at purebred dogs to figure that one out...

When you’re pulling the silk from the cocoons into thread what do you do when one or more breaks or runs out midway through? Simply pull another line through? Wouldn’t that leave strays along the thread? If left a attended the thread would slowest taper towards the end, no? Thanks!
