Maker Adventure: The Shadow Axe

This is the first in an on-going series bringing together Making physical objects, as well as Digital. Refurbished Kelly axe head on carved hickory, leather wrapping. Of course, everything is black. Life is like a video game without an end boss. Level up, farm, grind, fill your inventory with cool stuff, and keep moving forward. Hope you all enjoy the mashup!

When I saw the axe I figured it was black dye. Great alternative to dye or stain. Great video.

Flame it, then oil it. The charred wood dust becomes its own "stain". Thank you Cory!

How does the metal blackener hold up to use? Or is it gun bluing?

It's just Presto Blackener, and since its a surface finish, it will definitely wear down over time. I've got quite a few hours on the axe so far and the wearing is only near the striking head.

Jerry Medrano JAX brand makes a pretty good blackener that’s a bit more affordable, but we tend to use Birchwood Casey which is a bit more expensive but does an AMAZING job.
