I agree with you that brits say football but if you do research you realizing that change only came about in the 80s in an effort to seem less American as with a lot of UK-US cultural discrepancies. Not only do we call it Soccer as we learned from the UK(who not only invented the sport but called it soccer for much of its history) but so does Australia, Canada, New Zealand, most of Southern Africa, and even Ireland, aka the rest of the core anglosphere. It is yet another example of the UK doing something, getting all of its colonies to do it, then changing their minds later on to make fun of those colonies.
